You write free-topic essays and improve them with my help. Except in very difficult cases, FEE does not directly correct your writing but points out problems and suggests how they might be corrected, and it is you who must find many of the answers.
Hence, the exercise is a series of interactions between you and me, involving comments, suggestions, Q&A, and rewritings. This is quite different from submitting your essays and simply getting them back with one-off comments. FEE tries to develop in you the ability to improve your own writing and a skill to use references such as dictionaries and corpora.
For advantages and disadvantages of FEE and how it nicely works together with BTE, see the posting "Back translation exercise" on this board.
Study format
You can do one or two essays a month, and submit them any time during the month. Preferably, all questions and rewritings should be finished within the month.
Initially, you can submit 100~200 words, computer counted. But the amount I actually deal with will depend on how good and trouble free your work is: the less problems it has, the more of it I will be able to handle in a given time. This means that as you get better, the length of your essay can increase beyond the initial amount.
After I present my comments, you rewrite your essay based on my comments and consulting various references and submit it as a rewrite1. Here you can include your questions and comments about my comments. I then respond with more substantial answers, and based on this you do another rewrite as rewrite2.
Make sure you do your best to check and polish your writings before finally submitting it. If you leave simple mistakes (typing errors or basic grammar errors), you will be wasting my attention on them, away from the area where you really need help. So the more you prepare, the more you get.
Posting your essays
You will be assigned an individual board where you can post your essays and rewrites. Please title your postings as "Essay 1", "Essay 2", etc. and your rewrites as "Rewrite1", "Rewrite2", etc.
All the messages connected to an essay should be posted downwards. This means that I post my comments as a reply to your essay, and you post your rewrite1 as a reply to my comment and rewrite2 as a reply to the rewrite1.
In your rewrite 1, include my comments, so I can see my comments and your work on the same page. Make sure to preserve my markings by using the HTML 편집기, whose link sits on the top right of the message window (글쓰기창).
Comments and marking system
Markings A = awkward C = find the right collocation (See "Patterns and collocations") Cp = correct the capitalization E = find a better expression G = correct the grammar N = correct the number P = find the right pattern (See "Patterns and collocations") Pn = correct the punctuation Ps = find a better position S = find a better sentence structure T = correct the tense U = unclear [ ] = find the missing word [text] = added by the teacher [(W) text ]= wordy (too long and so rewrite and condense the text) text = this part can be deleted textA/textB = student expression/teacher's suggestion * = See the comment below
Also, the contents in the <Guide to Better Writing> board are very important. My comments will use them and refer to them as Guide 1, Guide 2, etc.
Sample correction
I become(T) the second grade of the college(E) this month. There is a big difference between the first and second grade(E). Now I have my juniors, and it is not familiar to(E) me yet. But I am so pleased to meet my juniors [(W) in spite of some financial difficulties of spending money to(P) them every day]. And I often think that I should study harder than before. In the last year(P) I felt that I am(T) 'free' so I hoped to have done(T) many things. Now I think that I was under some kinds(N) of illusion, or,(Pn) followed a mirage.
become(T):Change to -> have become
Present perfect is preferred because I am a sophomore now. For this, you can consult a grammar book under "Tense."
second grade of the college(E): Change to -> sophomore
To to this, you can consult a Korean-English dictionary under "학년."
familiar to(E):Change to -> used[accustomed] to
To find this expression, you would first go to a Korean-English dictionary to look up "익숙하다," which will give you "familiar to[with]", "used to," "accustomed to," etc. Then you would go to an English-English dictionary to check which of these is appropriate. -> Guide 3
[(W) in spite of some financial difficulties of spending money to(P) them every day]: Change to -> althoughI have to spend money for them every day
In the last year(P): Change to -> Last year
am(T): Change to -> was
hoped to have done(T): Change to -> was hoping to do
kinds(N): Change to -> kind
, or,(Pn): Change to -> or
