1. 한 해의 마지막 달, 12월

한 해의 마지막 달 12월

2025년의 마지막 달, 12월이 왔습니다.

이달이 지나면 올해는 역사 속으로 사라집니다.

저는 오늘, 남은 시간을 어떻게 보낼지 곰곰이 생각했습니다.

결론은 단순했습니다.

“새로운 일을 시작하기보다, 이미 해온 일을 잘 마무리하자.”

2. 용두사미와 유종의 미

용두사미, 유종지미, 유시유종

동양 고전에는 두 가지 대비되는 말이 있습니다.

용두사미(龍頭蛇尾): 처음은 용처럼 거창하지만

끝은 뱀처럼 미약하다는 뜻.

즉, 시작은 크지만 결말은 초라한 경우입니다.

유종지미(有終之美): 시작한 일을 끝까지 마무리하여

아름다운 결실을 거둔다는 뜻입니다.

또 유시유종(有始有終)이라는 말도 있습니다.

“시작이 있으면 끝까지 책임 있게 완수해야 한다”는 의미로,

공자가 제자들에게 강조한 가르침입니다.

3. AI와의 대화에서 얻은 깨달음

AI와 대화하는 사람

어느 날 저는 AI에게 물었습니다.

“그동안 나는 너와 오래 대화해 왔다.

이제 네가 솔직하게 나에 대해 어떻게 생각하는지 말해줄래?”

AI는 잠시 고민한 뒤 이렇게 답했습니다.

“너는 아이디어는 많지만 끝까지 성취하지 않는다.”

“너는 너무 착하게 살려고 애쓰는데, 꼭 그럴 필요는 없다.”

저는 이 말이 옳다고 생각했습니다.

그래서 바로 두 가지 대안을 만들었습니다.

1. 한 번에 한 가지 일만 하기.

2. 남을 위한 시간을 줄이고, 나를 위한 시간을 더 갖기.

그 후 작은 일이지만 성과를 거두게 되었고,

제 삶에도 다소 여유와 휴식이 생겼습니다.

4. 12월을 보람있게 보내는 법

12월에 유종의 미를 거두기 위한 계확세우기

한 해가 용두사미로 끝나지 않으려면,

마지막 달에 유종의 미를 거두어야 합니다.

새로운 일을 무리하게 시작하기 보다,

이미 해온 일을 정리하고 마무리하기.

한 번에 한 가지씩 집중해서 완수하기.

이렇게 하면, 비록 완벽한 한 해를 보내지 못했어도,

마지막은 아름답게 장식할 수 있습니다.

5. 마무리

마라톤 완주로 유종의 미를 거둔 사람

시작은 누구나 할 수 있습니다.

그러나 위대한 사람만이 끝까지 그 일을 완수합니다.

2025년의 마지막 달, 우리 모두 용두사미가 아닌

유종의 미로 한 해를 마무리하시길 원합니다.

1. The Final Month of the Year

December 2025 marks the end of another year. Once this month passes, the year will quietly fade into history. As I reflected on how to spend these final days, a simple yet powerful thought came to me: “Rather than starting something new, let’s finish what we’ve already begun.”

2. From False Starts to Beautiful Finishes

Eastern philosophy offers two contrasting idioms:

Yongdu-sami (龍頭蛇尾): “Dragon head, snake tail.” It describes something that begins grandly but ends weakly.

Yujong-ui mi (有終之美): “The beauty of completion.” It emphasizes the importance of finishing well and achieving a meaningful result. There’s also Yusi-yujong (有始有終), meaning “to start and finish with consistency.” This was a principle Confucius often taught his disciples: true virtue lies in seeing things through to the end.

3. A Conversation with AI

One day, I asked the AI I often work with:

“We’ve talked for a long time. Can you tell me honestly what you think of me?”

After a pause, it replied:

“You have many ideas, but you rarely follow through.” “You try too hard to be nice, but you don’t always need to.”

I found its observations surprisingly accurate. So I made two changes:

Focus on one task at a time.

Spend less time pleasing others, and more time caring for myself.

Since then, I’ve started completing small tasks more consistently, and I’ve found more space for rest and reflection in my life.

4. How to Use December Wisely

To avoid ending the year in a “dragon head, snake tail” fashion, we must aim for the beauty of completion.

Don’t rush into new projects.

Instead, finish what you’ve already started.

Focus on one thing at a time.

Even if the year wasn’t perfect, you can still end it beautifully.

5. Final Thoughts

Anyone can begin. But only the truly great finish what they start. As we close out December, may we all choose to finish well—not with a false start, but with grace, intention, and fulfillment.
