21. The name of Hangul!
The name 'Hangul' was created by Ju Shi-gyeong (周時經)
and It comes from the native word 'Han'
which means 'big', 'correct', and 'one'.
Its meaning is that it is the only good writing among large writings,
A writing that has been used by all the people,
A writing that is correct among writings (as the straight center is called the middle),
A writing that is round without any corners (as the mouth-sized filling is called a mouthful) and so on.
But why did we call this writing 'Hangul'? Our people have been fond of the word 'Han' since ancient times. This can be seen in the fact that our country's current name is Korea (韓國). The meaning of Han contains many good meanings such as king, chief, leader, one, big, correct, many, bright, excellent, and God. Hangul was called Hunminjeongeum when King Sejong promulgated the 28 letters.
On the other hand, it was also called Eonmun (諺文) and Eonsu (諺書), and later it was called Banjeol, Amkeul, Araetgeul, Gagyageul, Gukseo, Gukmun, Joseongeul, etc. until the modern era. Among them, the most common name was ‘Eonmun (a vulgar letter for writing formal speech)’.
However, as the Enlightenment period began, the name Eonmun was said to have originated from the Confucianism, so Professor Ju Si-gyeong began to change it to ‘Hangul’. And this name became popular when the Joseon Language Society designated the 29th day of the 9th lunar month of Byeong-in year, the 8th anniversary of the promulgation of Hunminjeongeum, as the promulgation anniversary, and at first it was called ‘Gagya Day’, but in 1928 it was changed to ‘Hangeul Day’.
In the end, the meaning of the name ‘Hangeul’ is interpreted as ‘the writing of a country’, ‘a great writing’, ‘the best writing in the world’, etc. Therefore, ‘Hangeul’ is a writing that will continue to grow together with the country and the Korean people forever, and it is a great writing, so it is a writing that should be used broadly and widely by all men, women, old and young, and it means that it is the best writing in the world. Hangeul was created based on the theory of yin and yang and the scientific principle of phonetic pronunciation based on Neo-Confucianism, so it is a mysterious and mystical writing that contains the quality of sound in the writing. It can be written horizontally, or it can be written by harmoniously combining consonants and vowels into syllables, and it can be written both horizontally and vertically. In addition, in the modern digital civilization era, it is very easy and fast to input Hangul characters on a computer or mobile phone keyboard, and Hangul is also a very suitable and useful character for creating various software that converts sound signals into characters through voice recognition programs. That is Hangul.
Hangul is the most developed phonetic character among phonetic characters. In other words, each character represents a single sound. The Hangul we currently use has ten vowels and fourteen consonants. There are also 27 types of final consonants. A vowel and a consonant can be combined to create one character, and final consonants can be added to it. In this way, Hangul is not only read as it is, but it is also very easy to learn because there are no separate print or cursive scripts and its composition principle is simple.
In Korea, all children know Hangul before entering elementary school. It is also the country with the lowest illiteracy rate in the world. The reason is that it is easy to learn, convenient to write, and widely distributed, and it is a character that can distinguish even the slightest difference in any branch of speech sounds.
In addition, the shape of the letters is simple, elegant, and easy to distinguish, so it can minimize the burden on the writer and reader, and since it consists of one sound per letter or one letter per sound, it is easy to write, and since it can be written in a group or a separate letter, or horizontally or vertically, it is a character that can easily create and use various fonts. Therefore, it is a character that can effectively respond to all developing letter machines, and moreover, since the shape of the letters is formed according to the laws of nature and the sound value is assigned, it is a character whose shape and sound value do not change permanently.
Also, it is easy for us Koreans living in the Korean cultural sphere to learn foreign languages because we can pronounce more than 90% of English and can express 8,800 sounds in our language. In comparison, Japanese has 300 characters and Chinese (Hanja) has about 400 characters, so Korean has a whopping 20 times more expressive power, making it an unrivaled language among the world's languages.
When foreigners speak, we often see them using gestures, which are accompanied by body movements or hand gestures. This is also a habit that arises due to a lack of expressive power in language. However, since we can express ourselves sufficiently through words, we do not necessarily need to use gestures. Nevertheless, it is interesting that there were people who once tried to imitate gestures because they were perceived as a sophisticated culture.
Some people complain that Korean has too many things that cannot be translated into foreign languages, which is bad. However, this is actually a problem that arises because we cannot find expressions that can be translated into any other language in the world. This is proof that Korean has detailed and precise expressive power.
As such, our language is the best in the world in terms of expressiveness, but it is also the best in terms of tone, emotion, and pitch. Ultimately, the reason why foreigners cannot translate our language is not because our language is inferior, but because foreign languages lack expressiveness and thus cannot translate our language. Compared to English, which is currently boasting its status as an international language, there is no doubt that our Hangul is an incomparably superior writing system. Therefore, as the excellence of Hangul becomes widely known around the world, English will yield its position as an international language to Hangul.
