The Covenant of Circumcision (Preparation to Multiply)
1 When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to him and said, “I am God Almighty; walk before me faithfully and be blameless. (The allmighty Lord asked Abram to live accordingly; life of called out.)
2 Then I will make my covenant between me and you and will greatly increase your numbers.” (Population Blessings) (Ch. 12 & 15)
3 Abram fell facedown, (Abram submitted himself to God.) and God said to him,
4 “As for me, this is my covenant with you: You will be the father of many nations. (Abram will be the father of many nations. Rom. 4:11-12, 16)
5 No longer will you be called Abram; your name will be Abraham, for I have made you a father of many nations. (Name change from Abram- noble father, to Abraham- the father of a multitude.)
6 I will make you very fruitful; I will make nations of you, and kings will come from you. (Blessing of chosen people.)
7 I will establish my covenant as an everlasting covenant between me and you and your descendants after you for the generations to come, to be your God and the God of your descendants after you. (Beginning of the everlasting chosen family.)
8 The whole land of Canaan, where you now reside as a foreigner, I will give as an everlasting possession to you and your descendants after you; and I will be their God.” (Blessing of the land of Canaan.)
9 Then God said to Abraham, “As for you, you must keep my covenant, you and your descendants after you for the generations to come. (The descendants of Abraham should be the subject of the covenant. through Isaac, Jacob, and etc.)
10 This is my covenant with you and your descendants after you, the covenant you are to keep: Every male among you shall be circumcised.
11 You are to undergo circumcision, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and you. (All males should be circumcised as a sign of separation from other nations.)(1, Circumcision)
12 For the generations to come every male among you who is eight days old must be circumcised, including those born in your household or bought with money from a foreigner- those who are not your offspring. (8 days after birth.)
13 Whether born in your household or bought with your money, they must be circumcised. My covenant in your flesh is to be an everlasting covenant. (All household and servants must be included.)
14 Any uncircumcised male, who has not been circumcised in the flesh, will be cut off from his people; he has broken my covenant.” (Anyone who denied circumcision will be cut off from the chosen family.)
15 God also said to Abraham, “As for Sarai your wife, you are no longer to call her Sarai; her name will be Sarah. (Sarai- noble lady, to Sarah- mother of nations.)
16 I will bless her and will surely give you a son by her. I will bless her so that she will be the mother of nations; kings of peoples will come from her.” (Sarah will be the mother of nations.)
17 Abraham fell facedown; he laughed and said to himself, “Will a son be born to a man a hundred years old? Will Sarah bear a child at the age of ninety?” (Abraham couldn't hold dry laugh due to the unbelievable promise of Sarah's reproduction.)
18 And Abraham said to God, “If only Ishmael might live under your blessing!” (Ishmael was good enough for Abraham.)
19 Then God said, “Yes, but your wife Sarah will bear you a son, and you will call him Isaac. I will establish my covenant with him as an everlasting covenant for his descendants after him. (God promised Isaac who is the child of promise.)
20 And as for Ishmael, I have heard you: I will surely bless him; I will make him fruitful and will greatly increase his numbers. He will be the father of twelve rulers, and I will make him into a great nation. (Ishmael also will be blessed to be the father of a nation.)
21 But my covenant I will establish with Isaac, whom Sarah will bear to you by this time next year.” (The promised son will be the heir of the covenant. Rom. 9:8)
22 When he had finished speaking with Abraham, God went up from him. (The covenant established.)
23 On that very day Abraham took his son Ishmael and all those born in his household or bought with his money, every male in his household, and circumcised them, as God told him.
24 Abraham was ninety-nine years old when he was circumcised, 25 and his son Ishmael was thirteen; 26 Abraham and his son Ishmael were both circumcised on that very day.
27 And every male in Abraham’s household, including those born in his household or bought from a foreigner, was circumcised with him. (Circumcision was carried out by Abraham at his 99 years old as ordered by God.)
(1, Circumcision) (AI)
In the Bible, circumcision is a foundational covenant sign established between God and Abraham, representing a physical mark of belonging, obedience, and set-apart status for Israel. It was mandatory for males on the eighth day. While physical in the Old Testament, the New Testament shifts focus to "circumcision of the heart" (spiritual transformation) over physical ritual.
Key Aspects of Circumcision in the Bible:
Covenant Sign (Old Testament): God initiated circumcision in Genesis 17 as an everlasting covenant sign with Abraham and his descendants. It marked the Israelites as God's chosen people.
Significance: It symbolized purification and the separation from sinful inclinations. It was also a required rite for inclusion in the covenant, including servants and foreigners in the household.
The Eighth Day: The law required male children to be circumcised on the eighth day after birth.
Spiritual Circumcision: The Bible frequently references a deeper, spiritual meaning, such as the "circumcision of the heart" (Deuteronomy 10:16, Romans 2:29), which signifies repentance, obedience, and dedication to God rather than just the physical act.
New Testament Shift: In the New Testament, physical circumcision is not required for Gentile believers. Paul argues that faith in Christ is the key, and legalistic reliance on physical circumcision undermines grace.
Key Bible Verses Regarding Circumcision:
Genesis 17:10–14: The establishment of the covenant of circumcision.
Joshua 5:2–9: The renewal of the practice for the Israelites before entering Canaan.
Romans 2:25–29: Paul explains that true circumcision is inward.
Acts 15:1–20: The Jerusalem Council determines that Gentile converts do not need to be circumcised to be saved.
Colossians 2:11–12: Describes the "circumcision of Christ" as a spiritual cutting away of the sinful nature, linked to baptism.
