[Explanation]
▣ [Six 4] If you tie the mouth of a sack tightly, there will be no blame(无咎,무구)
nor will praise or honor(无譽,무예) follow.
[Commentary]
One must tie the mouth of the sack tightly[括囊,괄낭 - Gwal-nang].
If you do not recklessly boast about your beauty or taalent and instead exercise
extreme caution, calamity can be avoided.
In doing so, there is no place for blame[无咎,무구 - Mu-gu] or fame[无譽,무예, Mu-ye] to take root.
Once one understands Heaven, the urge to leak the secrets of the cosmos boils up like
crazy inside one's mouth, but if one stays truly prudent and careful, worries will disappear.
The character '括(괄)' means tying and closing, which evokes the mouth's function
Yong-sa] of opening and closing.
Confucius, in the Wenyan Zhuan(Commentary on the Words of the Text),
explains the opening and closing[開閉,개폐 -Gae-pye] of Heaven and Earth through
Gwal-nang)" : "When Heaven and Earth are in harmony,
plants and trees flourish
When Heaven and Earth are in discord, even wise sages retreat into hiding
Gwal-nang-mu-gu-mu-ye)" demands self-restraint―tying
the mouth of the sack tightly until the right moment arrives, and opening it only
when it is truly time to open [蓋言謹也,개언근야 - Gae-eon-geun-ya].
Dongpa(Su Shi) also noter that blame and fame share a proportional relationship.
"It is difficult for anyone, as a human being, to avoid both blame and fame.
If one escapes blame, one inevitably enters fame; if one leaves fame behind,
one inevitably gets caught in the fetters of blame.
Blame is the cause that brings about guilt,
and fame is the cause that brings about suspicion.
It is indeed a truly difficult thing to eliminate both blame and fame.
The moment one utilizes world fame, blame begins to arise―such is the heartless
mathematical correlation.
Thus, like a woman's pouch, one cannot help but be extraordinarily prudent and careful."
In general, 括囊(괄낭 - Gwal-nang/ tying the mouth of the sack)"
is a metaphor for self-restraint and prudence.
This is because the Fourth Line is Yin(陰,음) in its proper position(正位,정위),
weighting heavily toward Yin, but does not hit the central middle(不中,부중).
In their later years, many people took "括囊(괄낭 - Gwal-nang)" as a life lesson.
This is because whether one leaves behind a sweet fragrance or a foul stench
depends entirely on "括囊(괄낭 - Gwal-nang)."
Therefore, one cannot fail to treat "括囊(괄낭 - Gwal-nang)" as a central,
critical axis[樞機,추기 - Chugi].
On the other hand, looking through the lens of Yin-Yang theory,
once the womb receives a seed, it possesses the nature of closing off to prevent
anything more ftom entering.
Physiologically, once fertilization occurs, the womb closes to nurture the seed to fruition.
This signifies that a noble person[君子,군자] requires a period to gather and preserve
Bo-im] their words and actions until the right time comes to unleash
their true capability to the world.
For whatever reason, now is not the time for the world to recognize you.
One must be careful with words and acctions.
Confucius was convinced that :
"Only such prudence will keep oneself and others from harm
Xiang Zhuan : Tying the mouth of the sack
brings no blame; prudence ensures no harm]."
In a world where "If you have money, people treat you like a king [金多若甘醴,금다약감례],
but when the profit ends, they discard you like a worn broom
one must surely heed the warning of "括囊(괄낭 - Gwal-nang)."
For reference, be careful with your words and actions,
and simply go about your work in silence.
Stepping forward will only lead to loss.
Since the world does not fit you, and you do not fit the world,
reflect upon yourself and exercise self-restraint.
Furthermore, "括囊(괄낭 ,Gwal-nang / tying the mouth of the sack)" means keeping
your wallet shut tight, so starting a new business is strictly forbidden.
Guard your impulse to step outside as if defending a fortress [
Bang-ui-yeo-seong], and guard your mouth as tightly as a sealed bottle
In the Silk Texts(帛書,백서 - Mawangdui I Ching manuscripts), it was also written :
"On Thursday, because the sack was tied tightly, no fault was committed,
but there was also nothing to be praised for."
