Hi guys!! Can anyone help me to explain this 필통이 어디에 있습니까?? And 여기가 어디 입니까??. I don't understand the grammar .Im wondering why there is 에 after 어디 in the first one but there is no 에 after 어디 in the second one??
I'm taking a stab at this and explaining it from an english point of view rather than precise grammar; in the first case you're basically saying (in slang terms) "where is the pencil case at?" ("에" being the necessary preposition), but the second case is like asking "what is this place?" when you are lost, so no preposition would be needed.
여기 - Means 'here', So in the second sentence the 에 particle isn't needed because we know that the context of the topic is based on a location. Where as in the first sentence "필통이 어디에....." needs the 에 particle because the context of the topic is based on the pencil case.
good question. let's see
필통이 어디에 있습니까?
여기가 어디입니까?
In first sentence 있다 is a verb.
In Second sentence 이다 is a postposition of predicative.
and 어디 is demonstrative pronoun.
if we see the form of sentence
first sentence has noun+postposition(location)
second sentence has noun+postposition(predicative)
so the first's sentence form is
"S(필통이)+AD(어디에)+V(있습니까)"
where is the pencil case at?
and second's sentence form is
"S(여기가)+V(어디입니까)"
where this place is?
so the different stentence structure makes differece.
thanks.
