This conference was showcase the applications of nanofood industry in the world. We had pleased to meet with deligates to discuss opportunities for research collaboration and commercialization for nanofood.
Our executives Dr. Dong-Myung Kim (President of International Nanofood Research Society, INRS) and Dr. Richard Kim (Vice President of INRS) prepared for the '2008 World Nanofood Conference by INRS in USA' by going through the various high-tech facilities available at the Nanofood Research Society (NRS) in Korea. At the conference, Dr. Kim was not free on his urgent business in Korea and deligates met with various INRS members from around the world, eventually compiling their experiences into a travel report that was put up on the INRS’s website (cafe.daum.net/nanofood).
At 1st and 2nd day, we were working together with the INRS members and the NRS members, to speak to attendees about the various programs for nanofood and several tips on getting through it. Dr. Jin-Tae Bae of the NRS also attended the event which is likely to be held on a yearly basis. As members in support of our INRS and as executives of the Nanofood Conference Programs in to help, the entire executive volunteered to help out for the University of Neworleans Open House, a one-day event in which volunteers of the University set up demonstrations and give lab tours for potential members. Dr. Pollach and Dr. Sweetman helped out with and performed demonstrations, while Prof. Lynn Frewer (Vice President of INRS) and Dr. Dust directed groups of attendees through the members led lab tours.
At 3rd day, Organized by Dr. Elisabath Namakula, FDA & UC Berkley, the lab tour was led by Dr. Kristian Olsen of the UC Berkley, a research fellow and user of the Nanofab. Dr. Kristian brought the attendees around the facilities, explaining to them not only the use and importance of the multi-million dollar devices present, but also discussed the potential benefits from the cutting-edge research being done there. A report of the tour was eventually put together, with all attendees signing a group picture to thank Dr. Kristian and the Nanofab for the tour.
At 4th day, Nanotech Core Centre for Nanoscale Physics and Nanomaterials Research Jaron VanDijken helped organize the tour to the lab of Dr. Freeman, Nanotech Core Professor and Canada Research Chair in Condensed Matter Physics, head of Ultrafast Microscopy Group. Students were first given a presentation by Dr. Freeman’s graduate student about how an STM (Scanning Tunneling Microscope) works before showing attendees the STM and a few results through its use.
At 5th day, Ultrafast Photonics and Nano-Optics Laboratory Dr. Elezzabi, Canada Research Chair in Ultrafast Photonics and Nano-Optics, led the tour and spoke about the developments and interesting work in his field. He went through the ramifications of much of the research conducted in his laboratory, and also conducted a demonstration for students that used a powerful, fentosecond laser to generate plasma by concentrating the laser onto a single point in space. A speck of plasma (ionized gas) was generated from this, and we could see light emitting from
the spot. A report by Dr. Ivan Chan was put together from this tour.
At 6th day, Dr. Thasui’s lab in the Lasers and Plasmas Research Group Dr. Thasui, whose research projects include laser based microfabrication and nanofabrication, showed the students his lab and performed a number of very intriguing experiments while relating the results and processes to a number of the courses he teaches. The lab tour was very interesting as Dr. Thsaui
continually paralleled real-world needs with the research results within the nano-optics and nano-photonics community.
In the coming months, our INRS will be looking forward to hold a guest speaker at NRS in Korea,
organize an industry tour, and execute our outreach program. Prof. Edward Lau was recently appointed our officer for outreach nanofood projects and has several ideas to further expand the variety of nanofood-related experiments for outreach. Additionally, our INRS will be working with other members and programs to organize events such as the upcoming Nanofood Safety Conference in next year.
The First World Nanofood Conference (WNC) by International Nanofood Research Society (INRS) represents the sixth edition of this successful event series with previous events having been held in Washington DC USA, London UK, Munich Germany, Ireland, Singapore. The WNC is the one comprehensive event that brings together the thought leaders in science, government, and business to discuss the entire value chain of nanotechnology’s commercial development.
Already established as an annual Nanofood Resarch Society (NRS)'s event in Korea, the WNC now comes to one of world fastest growing economies, helping delegates and exhibitors tap into each contry’s emerging rich seam of technology talent for nanofood and nanotechnology. The WNC events have been able to bring together both comprehensive program on the varied applications of nanofood technologies within industry with world-renowned speakers.
This year the first conference program of the WNC has been entirely developed by INRS, the leading consulting company on nanotechnology and its impact on industries worldwide. We look forward to seeing you next year for the 2009 NWC.
