SEOUL, Sept. 11 (Yonhap) -- The eldest son of former President Roh Tae-woo has been tapped as South Korea's new ambassador to China, a senior government official said Thursday.

If confirmed, Roh Jae-heon, 60, director of the East Asia Culture Center in Seoul, will become the first ambassador to Beijing under the Lee Jae Myung administration.

"I understand that Roh has been selected for the post, with working-level procedures currently in progress," the official told Yonhap News Agency.
Roh is neither a career diplomat nor a key political figure within the administration but has engaged in various activities related to China, including serving as an adviser to an international advisory council of the Chinese city of Chengdu in 2016 and participating in exchange programs.
An official of the ruling Democratic Party said the government is likely to have viewed him as a suitable figure to improve bilateral ties given his "expertise on China that he built up beyond what is publicly known."
Roh previously apologized over the brutal crackdown on a pro-democracy uprising in the southwestern city of Gwangju in 1980 on behalf of his father.

(서울=연합뉴스) 이상현 기자 = 이재명 정부의 첫 주중대사로 노태우 전 대통령의 장남인 노재헌(60) 재단법인 동아시아문화센터 이사장이 사실상 내정된 것으로 11일 알려졌다.

정부 고위 관계자는 이날 통화에서 "노 이사장을 중국대사로 낙점하고 실무 절차가 진행되는 것으로 알고 있다"고 말했다.

노 이사장은 지난달 말에도 박병석 전 국회의장, 더불어민주당 김태년·박정 의원과 함께 이 대통령의 특사단으로 중국을 방문, 시진핑 중국 국가주석에게 보내는 이 대통령의 친서를 전달한 바 있다.

노 이사장을 내정한 배경에는 노 전 대통령이 과거 재임 시절인 1992년 한중수교를 맺는 등 이른바 '북방정책'에 힘써왔다는 점이 작용한 것으로 보인다.

실제로 다이빙 주한중국대사는 한중 수교 33주년 기념일을 앞둔 지난달 20일 경기 파주 통일동산에 위치한 노 전 대통령 묘역을 참배하며 "중국은 한국과 함께 수교 당시 초심을 지키기를 원한다"고 말하기도 했다.

노 이사장 자신도 2016년 중국 청두시 국제자문단 고문을 맡는 등 한중 교류를 위해 다양한 활동을 벌여 왔다.

여권의 한 관계자는 "그동안 알려진 것 이상으로 중국에 대한 전문성을 쌓아왔다는 점에서, 정부로서도 한중관계 개선에 적임자라고 판단했을 것"이라고 전했다.

다만 노 이사장이 정통 외교관 출신이거나 정권의 핵심부에서 활동해 온 인사는 아니라는 점에서 예상 밖의 인선이라는 분석이 제기되고 있다.

나아가 일각에서는 12·12 군사반란과 5·18 민주화운동 당시 전두환·노태우 전 대통령의 행위들에 대한 여론의 반감이 적지 않은 데다, 최근 검찰이 노 전 대통령 일가의 비자금 조성 의혹에 대해 수사 중인 상황에서 부적절한 인선이 아니냐는 목소리도 나온다.
