As a young Korean woman, I face a number of assumptions about my appearance from people both inside and outside the country. These "prejudices" I face are often connected to how people around the world perceive Koreans, and Korean women in particular, as a group rather than understanding me as an individual. They are also tied into the nature of the country's recent cultural and economic success. Irrespective of their origins, they can be frustrating. And sometimes even hurtful. Just because certain groups demonstrate specific characteristics, it doesn't mean that every individual in that group will possess them.
젊은 한국 여성으로서, 국내외의 사람들로부터 나의 외모에 대한 많은 가정들에 직면해 있다. 내가 마주하는 이러한 '편견'들은 나를 한 개인으로 이해하기보다는 전 세계 사람들이 한국인, 특히 한국 여성을 한 집단으로 인식하는 방식과 연결되는 경우가 많다. 그들은 또한 그 나라의 최근 문화적, 경제적 성공의 본질에 얽매여 있다. 기원에 관계없이, 그들은 좌절 할 수 있다. 가끔은 고통스럽기까지 하다. 특정 그룹이 특정 특성을 보여주기 때문에 해당 그룹의 모든 개인이 해당 그룹을 에 속한다는 는 의미는 아니다.

Our country's music and entertainment industries are driven by incredibly high beauty standards. The Korean people we see at the forefront of the Korean wave are incredibly hot. Aesthetic perfection is expected from idols and performers alike. This is undeniably one of the main reasons K-pop has been able to grow so fast, but it doesn't mean that every individual in Korea is obsessed by beauty and those particular standards.
우리나라의 음악과 엔터테인먼트 산업은 믿을 수 없을 정도로 높은 미의 기준에 의해 주도되고 있다. 한류의 최전선에서 우리가 보는 한국 사람들은 인기가 있다. 이것은 K-팝이 그렇게 빠르게 성장할 수 있었던 주된 이유 중 하나임은 부인할 수 없지만, 한국의 모든 사람들이 아름다움과 그 특별한 기준에 집착하고 있다는 것을 의미하지는 않는다.  
 
Personally, I think any talk about the pressure K-pop idols place on us Korean citizens in terms of beauty standards is no different from the pressure placed by Hollywood stars on the global audience. K-pop might seem very important to a lot of people, but for those of us who are not fans, it doesn't really have a big influence on our lives. In that sense, it seems odd to exaggerate the toxic culture of K-beauty in our country as a unique and unbearable problem when everyone in this world is affected by beauty standards projected by the media.
개인적으로, 나는 K-팝 아이돌 들이 우리 한국 시민들에게 미의 기준에 대한 압박감에 대해 말하는 것은 할리우드 스타들이 전세계 관객들에게 가하는 압박감과 다르지 않다고 생각한다. K-팝은 많은 사람들에게 매우 중요한 것처럼 보일 수도 있지만, 팬이 아닌 사람들에게는 K-팝이 우리의 삶에 큰 영향을 미치지 않는다. 그런 의미에서 이 세상 모든 사람들이 미디어가 투영한 미의 기준에 영향을 받는 상황에서 우리나라 K-뷰티의 독소적 문화를 독특하고 참을 수 없는 문제로 과장하는 것은 이상해 보인다.
 
Yes, K-pop culture and the surrounding fandom undoubtedly have many toxic elements, but excessively exaggerating these aspects prevents any true analysis. Moreover, it also creates and reinforces the prejudice that every Korean woman is somehow trying to look like a K-pop idol.
그렇다, K-팝문화와 주변 팬덤은 의심할 여지 없이 많은 독성 요소를 가지고 있지만, 이러한 측면을 지나치게 과장하는 것은 진정한 분석을 방해한다. 게다가, 그것은 또한 모든 한국 여성들이 어떻게든 K-팝 아이돌처럼 보이려고 노력하고 있다는 편견을 만들고 강화시킨다.

Body shaming

I cannot deny that we have strict beauty standards here in Korea and that body shaming happens in this country. However, and this is the important part, it is not as crazy as people think nor as preval‎ent as certain media reports would have you believe. In reality, as part of our day-to-day lives, we can see a huge variety of women's body types in this country. Yes, I am skinny. But I was born with this body type and I don't gain weight that easily. My body might seem to be that of someone who has worked hard to emulate a K-pop idol but that is far from the truth. And, again, it demonstrates prejudice. Favoring a generalized group understanding instead of seeing the individual.
나는 우리가 한국에서 엄격한 미용 기준을 가지고 있고 이 나라에서 신체 수치심이 일어난다는 것을 부인할 수 없다. 그러나 이것이 중요한 부분인데 사람들이 생각하는 것만 큼 미친 것도 아니고 특정 언론 보도가 당신이 믿는 것처럼 널리 퍼지지도 않는다. 현실적으로, 우리의 일상 생활의 일부로서, 우리는 이 나라에서 매우 다양한 여성의 체형을 볼 수 있다. 그렇다, 나는 마른 편이다. 하지만 나는 이런 체형을 가지고 태어났고 그렇게 쉽게 살이 찌지 않는다. 내 몸은 K-pop 아이돌을 모방하기 위해 열심히 노력한 사람의 몸처럼 보일지 모르지만 그것은 사실과는 거리가 멀다. 그리고, 다시, 그것은 편견을 보여준다. 개인을 보는 대신 일반화된 집단 이해를 선호한다.
 
Likewise, there are numerous women who don't put on makeup. I don't wear full makeup unless it is a special occasion. We also know that commenting on each other's body is rude. Personally I've never experienced people talking about my body or my appearance by people not really close to me. While that culture might have existed in the past to a certain degree, or it might be described as reality by some media reports, for my generation, we see things differently. Our values have changed and continue to do so.
마찬가지로 화장을 하지 않는 여성들도 많다. 특별한 경우가 아니면 풀 메이크업을 하지 않는다. 우리는 또한 서로의 몸에 대한 논평이 무례하다는 것을 안다. 개인적으로 나는 내 몸이나 외모에 대해 말하는 사람들을 실제로 가까운 사람들 외에는 경험해 본 적이 없다. 그 문화는 과거에 어느 정도 존재했을 수도 있고, 일부 언론 보도에 의해 현실로 묘사될 수도 있지만, 우리 세대는 사물을 다르게 본다. 우리의 가치는 변했고 계속 그렇게 하고 있다.

Western influence?

Another common misperception about Korean women is that we want to look like western women. I do concede that some of the beauty standards in Korea today have their origins in certain western standards. However, this doesn't mean that we ignore or belittle our own indigenous Asian characteristics and physical traits. It also doesn't mean that everyone is completely obsessed with some fantasy of an ideal western beauty standard.
한국 여성에 대한 또 다른 일반적인 오해는 우리가 서양 여성처럼 보이고 싶어한다는 것이다. 나는 오늘날 한국의 몇몇 미의 기준들이 특정한 서양 기준에서 유래되었다는 것을 인정한다. 그러나 이것은 우리가 우리 자신의 고유한 아시아 특성과 신체적 특성을 무시하거나 경시한다는 것을 의미하지는 않는다. 그것은 또한 모든 사람들이 이상적인 서양 미의 기준에 대한 어떤 환상에 완전히 사로잡혀 있다는 것을 의미하지는 않는다.

A great many celebrities and influencers in Korea possess and demonstrate the facial features of traditional K- beauty. We love mono-lids and dark skin. Everyone has their own preference and ideal type. We are individual desiring machines. And yet, unfortunately, and for reasons I'm never quite clear about, the media often remains silent about this.
한국의 많은 유명 인사와 영향력있는 사람들은 전통적인 K- 뷰티의 얼굴 특징을 가지고 보여준다. 우리는 쌍가풀이 없고 진한 피부를 좋아한다. 누구나 자신만의 선호와 이상형이 있다. 우리는 개별적인 욕망을 가진 기계들이다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 불행하게도, 그리고 내가 결코 확실히 알지 못하는 이유들 때문에, 언론은 종종 이것에 대해 침묵을 지키고 있다.

In terms of a preference for white skin, our country has had this particular fascination for jade white skin since long before we Koreans even first came into contact with the western world. Such skin was a sign that the woman didn't have to work in the sunlight when agriculture was the dominant economic source. It was therefore a significant external indicator of wealth. I was born with light skin, so some people have asked me whether I had some kind of medical procedure. However, my whole family has white skin and we were born like this. The same goes with so many other external features like a high nose or double eyelids. Koreans are born with many of the features some people immediately, and incorrectly, think of as western. It doesn't necessarily mean someone has had plastic surgery. Or if they have, again, it doesn't point to them blindly mimicking the features of people in the west.
하얀 피부에 대한 선호도 측면에서, 우리 나라는 한국인들이 서구 세계와 처음 접촉하기 훨씬 전부터 옥색의 하얀 피부에 특별한 매력을 가지고 있었다. 이러한 피부는 농업이 지배적인 경제적 원천이었을 때 여성이 햇빛 아래에서 일할 필요가 없다는 신호였다. 따라서 그것은 부의 중요한 외부 지표였다. 나는 밝은 피부를 가지고 태어났기 때문에 어떤 사람들은 나에게 어떤 종류의 의학적 시술을 받았느냐고 물었다. 하지만 우리 가족은 모두 하얀 피부를 가지고 있고 우리는 이렇게 태어났다. 높은 코나 쌍꺼풀과 같은 다른 많은 외부 특징들도 마찬가지다. 한국인들은 많은 특징들을 가지고 태어난다. 어떤 사람들은 잘못보면 서양인처럼 태어난다. 아니면, 다시 말하지만, 그것은 그들이 맹목적으로 서양 사람들의 특징을 흉내내고 있다는 것을 가리키지 않는다.
 
The Republic of Plastic Surgery?

A common online refrain will be that every Korean woman gets plastic surgery. That we are a shallow and unoriginal people all blindly following some beauty standard to cover up for some perceived defects in our personality or character. Such views are troubling.
일반적인 온라인 후렴구는 모든 한국 여성들이 성형수술을 받는다는 것이다. 우리가 천박하고 독창적이지 않은 사람들이라는 것은 우리의 성격이나 성격에 있어서 어떤 인식된 결함을 감추기 위해 맹목적으로 어떤 미의 기준을 따르고 있다는 것이다.
 
Yes, I concede that a lot of plastic surgery here is focused on beauty enhancements. But not every Korean woman gets plastic surgery. I personally only have a handful of friends who have had plastic surgery. And, more importantly, not all plastic surgery is the result of cosmetic enhancement. Our country has some of the cheapest and best medical care in the world. And, as Koreans, we use it a lot. Whether we have a cold, a sprained wrist, or even something far more troubling, we are quick to utilize the marvelous hospitals our country possesses. As a result, we have some of the highest life expectancies in the world.
그렇다, 나는 한국에서 미용증진을 위한 성형이 많다는 것을 인정한다. 그러나 모든 한국여성들이 성형을 하는 것은 아니다. 나는 개인적으로 성형을 한 친구가 몇 명 있다. 더욱 중요한 것은 모든 성형이 미용을 목적으로 하는 것이 아니라는 것이다. 우리나라는 세계에서 가장 싼 양질의 의료서비스를 제공하고 있다. 한국인들은 이 서비스를 많이 이용한다. 감기든, 손목이 삐었든, 심지어 훨씬 더 골치 아픈 일이 있든, 우리는 우리나라가 가지고 있는 훌륭한 병원을 재빨리 이용한다. 그 결과, 우리는 세계에서 가장 높은 기대수명을 가지고 있다.  

We trust our doctors and the various surgeries provided. We will embark on a great number of procedures to make our physical, psychological, and emotional lives better. And we can do so quickly and cheaply.
우리는 의사와 제공되는 다양한 수술을 신뢰합니다. 우리는 신체적, 심리적, 정서적 삶을 더 좋게 만들기 위해 많은 절차를 밟을 것이다. 우리는 빠르고 저렴하게 그렇게 할 수 있다.

I am an individual
나는 개인이다

To date, I have come to realize that various prejudices about Korean women make it very difficult for me to be seen as an individual. To exist and be known as an adult called Su-hyun. Instead, I'm often ignored or simply cast aside as another Korean woman trying to emulate K-pop idols, overly-obsessed with beauty standards, and likely full of plastic. Yes, it is true that some Korean women get plastic surgery and that beauty standards are different here from other parts of the world. But you cannot just automatically assume that every Korean woman you see has had plastic surgery. This is rude.
현재까지 한국 여성에 대한 다양한 편견들이 개인으로서 나를 보는 것을 매우 어렵게 만든다는 것을 깨닫게 되었다. 수현이라는 어른으로 존재하고 알려지는 것 대신, 나는 종종 무시당하거나 단순히 K-팝 아이돌을 모방하려고 하는 또 다른 한국 여성으로 무시당하거나, 미용 기준에 지나치게 집착하고, 아마도 성형을 한 것으로 인식된다. 하지만 여러분이 보는 모든 한국 여성들이 성형수술을 받았다고 자동적으로 추정할 수는 없다. 이건 무례한 짓이다.
 
We can and should still embrace, analyze, and try to understand each other's culture. In doing so, we will no doubt refer to some external features of culture. However, we shouldn't just skip careful observation and understanding before making conclusions. I feel that this kind of skipping happens a lot toward us as Koreans, so I wanted to try and correct some of the more common and overly exaggerated perceptions about our country and people that I see online.
우리는 여전히 서로의 문화를 포용하고 분석하고 이해하려고 노력할 수 있고 또 그래야 한다. 그렇게 함으로써, 우리는 틀림없이 문화의 어떤 외부적 특징들을 언급할 것이다. 그러나 결론을 내리기 전에 신중한 관찰과 이해를 건너뛰어서는 안 된다. 나는 이런 종류의 건너 뛰기가 한국인으로서 우리에게 많이 일어나는 것을 느낀다. 그래서 나는 우리 나라와 내가 온라인에서 보는 사람들에 대한보다 일반적이고 지나치게 과장된 인식을 고치려고 노력하고 싶었다.

I was born with light skin, so some people have asked me whether I had some kind of medical procedure. However, my whole family has white skin and we were born like this. The same goes with so many other external features like a high nose or double eyelids. Koreans are born with many of the features some people immediately, and incorrectly, think of as western. It doesn't necessarily mean someone has had plastic surgery. Or if they have, again, it doesn't point to them blindly mimicking the features of people in the west.
하얀 피부에 대한 선호도 측면에서, 우리 나라는 한국인들이 서구 세계와 처음 접촉하기 훨씬 전부터 옥색의 하얀 피부에 특별한 매력을 가지고 있었다. 이러한 피부는 농업이 지배적인 경제적 원천이었을 때 여성이 햇빛 아래에서 일할 필요가 없다는 신호였다. 따라서 그것은 부의 중요한 외부 지표였다. 나는 밝은 피부를 가지고 태어났기 때문에 어떤 사람들은 나에게 어떤 종류의 의학적 시술을 받았느냐고 물었다. 하지만 우리 가족은 모두 하얀 피부를 가지고 있고 우리는 이렇게 태어났다. 높은 코나 쌍꺼풀과 같은 다른 많은 외부 특징들도 마찬가지다. 한국인들은 많은 특징들을 가지고 태어난다. 어떤 사람들은 잘못보면 서양인처럼 태어난다. 아니면, 다시 말하지만, 그것은 그들이 맹목적으로 서양 사람들의 특징을 흉내내고 있다는 것을 가리키지 않는다.
 
The Republic of Plastic Surgery?
성형공화국?

A common online refrain will be that every Korean woman gets plastic surgery. That we are a shallow and unoriginal people all blindly following some beauty standard to cover up for some perceived defects in our personality or character. Such views are troubling.
일반적인 온라인 후렴구는 모든 한국 여성들이 성형수술을 받는다는 것이다. 우리가 천박하고 독창적이지 않은 사람들이라는 것은 우리의 성격이나 성격에 있어서 어떤 인식된 결함을 감추기 위해 맹목적으로 어떤 미의 기준을 따르고 있다는 것이다.
 
Yes, I concede that a lot of plastic surgery here is focused on beauty enhancements. But not every Korean woman gets plastic surgery. I personally only have a handful of friends who have had plastic surgery. And, more importantly, not all plastic surgery is the result of cosmetic enhancement. Our country has some of the cheapest and best medical care in the world. And, as Koreans, we use it a lot. Whether we have a cold, a sprained wrist, or even something far more troubling, we are quick to utilize the marvelous hospitals our country possesses. As a result, we have some of the highest life expectancies in the world.
그렇다, 나는 한국에서 미용증진을 위한 성형이 많다는 것을 인정한다. 그러나 모든 한국여성들이 성형을 하는 것은 아니다. 나는 개인적으로 성형을 한 친구가 몇 명 있다. 더욱 중요한 것은 모든 성형이 미용을 목적으로 하는 것이 아니라는 것이다. 우리나라는 세계에서 가장 싼 양질의 의료서비스를 제공하고 있다. 한국인들은 이 서비스를 많이 이용한다. 감기든, 손목이 삐었든, 심지어 훨씬 더 골치 아픈 일이 있든, 우리는 우리나라가 가지고 있는 훌륭한 병원을 재빨리 이용한다. 그 결과, 우리는 세계에서 가장 높은 기대수명을 가지고 있다.  

We trust our doctors and the various surgeries provided. We will embark on a great number of procedures to make our physical, psychological, and emotional lives better. And we can do so quickly and cheaply.
우리는 의사와 제공되는 다양한 수술을 신뢰합니다. 우리는 신체적, 심리적, 정서적 삶을 더 좋게 만들기 위해 많은 절차를 밟을 것이다. 우리는 빠르고 저렴하게 그렇게 할 수 있다.

I am an individual
나는 개인이다

To date, I have come to realize that various prejudices about Korean women make it very difficult for me to be seen as an individual. To exist and be known as an adult called Su-hyun. Instead, I'm often ignored or simply cast aside as another Korean woman trying to emulate K-pop idols, overly-obsessed with beauty standards, and likely full of plastic. Yes, it is true that some Korean women get plastic surgery and that beauty standards are different here from other parts of the world. But you cannot just automatically assume that every Korean woman you see has had plastic surgery. This is rude.
현재까지 한국 여성에 대한 다양한 편견들이 개인으로서 나를 보는 것을 매우 어렵게 만든다는 것을 깨닫게 되었다. 수현이라는 어른으로 존재하고 알려지는 것 대신, 나는 종종 무시당하거나 단순히 K-팝 아이돌을 모방하려고 하는 또 다른 한국 여성으로 무시당하거나, 미용 기준에 지나치게 집착하고, 아마도 성형을 한 것으로 인식된다. 하지만 여러분이 보는 모든 한국 여성들이 성형수술을 받았다고 자동적으로 추정할 수는 없다. 이건 무례한 짓이다.
 
We can and should still embrace, analyze, and try to understand each other's culture. In doing so, we will no doubt refer to some external features of culture. However, we shouldn't just skip careful observation and understanding before making conclusions. I feel that this kind of skipping happens a lot toward us as Koreans, so I wanted to try and correct some of the more common and overly exaggerated perceptions about our country and people that I see online.
우리는 여전히 서로의 문화를 포용하고 분석하고 이해하려고 노력할 수 있고 또 그래야 한다. 그렇게 함으로써, 우리는 틀림없이 문화의 어떤 외부적 특징들을 언급할 것이다. 그러나 결론을 내리기 전에 신중한 관찰과 이해를 건너뛰어서는 안 된다. 나는 이런 종류의 건너 뛰기가 한국인으로서 우리에게 많이 일어나는 것을 느낀다. 그래서 나는 우리 나라와 내가 온라인에서 보는 사람들에 대한보다 일반적이고 지나치게 과장된 인식을 고치려고 노력하고 싶었다.
