SEOUL, Sept. 16 (Yonhap) -- The presidential office said Tuesday it would not rush to sign a trade deal with the United States that could undermine the interest of Korean companies amid reports of little progress in talks over Seoul's investment package for Washington.

Seoul and Washington reached a deal in late July to reduce U.S. tariffs on Korean products from 25 percent to 15 percent but have yet to sign a formal agreement amid reported differences over the details of Seoul's US$350 billion investment pledge.

"(The government) cannot sign an agreement that would cause major losses to our companies just because of time pressure," a senior presidential official told reporters on the condition of anonymity.
​
While Seoul's goal is to conclude the negotiations "at an early date," the official stressed the government would not accept terms that "cause serious harm" to the national interest, particularly the interests of Korean companies.
​
The official said President Lee Jae Myung remains firm in not coercing Korean firms to bear losses in their U.S. investments, adding, "companies invest in the U.S. to make money, not to give it away."

The two sides have been in talks to reach a consensus on details of the deal, such as the makeup of Seoul's investment package, funding plans and profit sharing.
​
The reduction of U.S. tariffs on Japanese autos to 15 percent from 27.5 percent, starting Tuesday, has further raised pressure on Korean negotiators, as it is bound to put Korean auto exports at a disadvantage in the U.S. market under the current 25 percent tariffs.

(서울=연합뉴스) 임형섭 기자 = 대통령실 고위 관계자는 16일 한미 관세협상과 관련해 "시한에 쫓긴다고 해서 우리 기업들이 크게 손해를 볼 수 있는 합의안에 서명할 수는 없다"고 말했다.

이 관계자는 이날 기자들을 만나 "특정 국가와의 협상이 이렇게 장기간 교착된 경험은 처음이라서 매우 어려움을 느끼고 있다. 이른 시일 안에 협상을 타결하겠다는 목표는 분명하다"면서도 "시한 때문에 국익에 심대한 악영향을 줄 수는 없다"고 밝혔다.

그는 "추상적으로 '국익'이라는 표현을 쓰지만, 세부적으로 보면 기업의 이익과 직결된 사안들"이라고 설명했다.

이어 "기업이 미국에 투자하러 가는 것은 돈을 벌러 가는 것이지, 돈을 퍼주러 가는 것이 아니지 않느냐"며 "그런 기업을 향해 정부가 나서서 '미국이 원하는 대로 해달라'고 할 수는 없다. 기업의 손해를 강요하지 않겠다는 이재명 대통령의 의지는 확고하다"고 거듭 강조했다.

이 관계자는 "평소에도 대통령이 어디에 에너지를 많이 쏟는지 살펴보면, 경제·민생에 가장 큰 힘을 쏟고 그다음이 한미 협상"이라며 "국익 중심으로 협상에 임할 것이라는 점은 분명히 말씀드릴 수 있다"고 덧붙였다.
