For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication:

(1 Thessalonians 4:3)

(7786) [성화에 있는 죽음의 면과 삶의 면을 동시에 다루어야 하나, 우리는 너무 많은 시간을 죽음에 관한 것에 소비합니다.] The Death Side. In sanctification God has to deal with us on the death side as well as on the life side. Sanctification requires our coming to the place of death, but many of us spend so much time there that we become morbid. There is always a tremendous battle before sanctification is realized—something within us pushing with resentment against the demands of Christ. When the Holy Spirit begins to show us what sanctification means, the struggle starts immediately. Jesus said, “If anyone comes to Me and does not hate ... his own life ... he cannot be My disciple.” (Luke 14:26).

(26) If any [man] come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.

(27) And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.

(28) For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have [sufficient] to finish [it]?

(29) Lest haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish [it], all that behold [it] begin to mock him,

(30) Saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish.

(Luke 14: 26-30)

(26) 어떤 사람이 내게 오면서 자기 아버지나 어머니나 아내나 자녀나 형제나 자매나 참으로 자기 생명도 미워하지 아니하면 능히 내 제자가 되지 못하고

(27) 누구든지 자기 십자가를 지고 나를 따라오지 아니하는 자도 능히 내 제자가 되지 못하리라.

(28) 너희 중에 누가 망대를 세우려 할 때에 자기가 가진 것이 그것을 완성하기에 충분한지 먼저 앉아서 그 비용을 계산하지 아니하겠느냐?

(29) 그렇게 하지 아니하여 그가 기초만 놓은 채 그것을 완성하지 못하면 그것을 보는 모든 자가 그를 조롱하기 시작하여

(30) 이르되, 이 사람이 세우는 일을 시작하고 완성하지는 못하였다, 하리라.

(7787) [성화의 과정 중 우리는 우리에게 아무것도 남아 있지 않은 상태 곧 죽음과 같은 상태로 되어야 합니다. 이러한 죽음과 같은 상태는 너무 엄격하고 심하다고 우리는 느끼지만 주님은 우리에게 그것을 요구하고 계십니다.] In the process of sanctification, the Spirit of God will strip me down until there is nothing left but myself, and that is the place of death. Am I willing to be myself and nothing more? Am I willing to have no friends, no father, no brother, and no self-interest—simply to be ready for death? That is the condition required for sanctification. No wonder Jesus said, “I did not come to bring peace but a sword” (Matthew 10:34). This is where the battle comes, and where so many of us falter. We refuse to be identified with the death of Jesus Christ on this point. We say, “But this is so strict. Surely He does not require that of me.” Our Lord is strict, and He does require that of us.

(34) Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.

(35) For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.

(36) And a man's foes [shall be] they of his own household.

(37) He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.

(38) And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me.

(Matthew 10: 34-38)

(34) 내가 땅에 화평을 보내러 온 줄로 생각하지 말라. 나는 화평이 아니라 검을 보내러 왔노라.

(35) 사람이 자기 아버지를 딸이 자기 어머니를 며느리가 자기 시어머니를 대적하여 불화하게 하려고 내가 왔나니

(38) 또 자기 십자가를 지고 내 뒤를 따르지 아니하는 자도 내게 합당하지 아니하니라.

(7788) [나의 모든 것, 나 자신까지도 포기하고 주님 앞으로 나아갈 준비가 되어 있습니까? 바로 그 때에 주님은 우리를 성화시키시며, 우리는 주님만을 바라게 됩니다.] Am I willing to reduce myself down to simply “me”? Am I determined enough to strip myself of all that my friends think of me, and all that I think of myself? Am I willing and determined to hand over my simple naked self to God? Once I am, He will immediately sanctify me completely, and my life will be free from being determined and persistent toward anything except God (see I Thessalonians 5:23-24).

(14) Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all [men].

(15) See that none render evil for evil unto any [man]; but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all [men].

(16) Rejoice evermore.

(17) Pray without ceasing.

(18) In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

(19) Quench not the Spirit.

(20) Despise not prophesyings.

(21) Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.

(22) Abstain from all appearance of evil.

(23) And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and [I pray God] your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

(24) Faithful [is] he that calleth you, who also will do [it].

(25) Brethren, pray for us.

(1 Thessalonians 5: 14-25)

(23) 평강의 바로 그 [하나님]께서 너희를 온전하게 거룩히 구별하시기를 원하노라. 내가 [하나님]께 기도하여 너희의 온 영과 혼과 몸을 우리 [주] 예수 그리스도께서 오실 때까지 흠 없이 보존해 주시기를 구하노라.

(24) 너희를 부르시는 분은 신실하시니 그분께서 또한 그것을 행하시리라. (25) 형제들아, 우리를 위해 기도하라.

(7789) [성화란 주님이 어떤 다른 것은 우리 안에 넣어주시는 것이 아니라, 주님 자신이 우리 안에 계시는 것입니다.] When I pray, “Lord, show me what sanctification means for me,” He will show me. It means being made one with Jesus. Sanctification is not something Jesus puts in me—it is Himself in me (see 1 Corinthians 1:30).

(24) But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.

(25) Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men.

(26) For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, [are called]:

(27) But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty;

(28) And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, [yea], and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are:

(29) That no flesh should glory in his presence.

(30) But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption:

(31) That, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.

[Human Race]

[Jesus] said to them, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.” Mark 6:31

The alarm clock goes off. Too early, it seems. But you have a long day ahead. You have work to do, appointments to keep, people to care for, or all this and more. Well, you are not alone. Each day, many of us rush from one matter to another. As someone has wittily suggested, “That’s why we are called the human race.”
When the apostles returned from their first mission trip, they had a lot to report. But Mark did not record Jesus’s eval‎uation of the disciples’s work; rather, he focused on His concern that they rest awhile. Jesus said, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest” (6:31).
Ultimately, we fi-nd true rest through recognizing the presence of God and trusting Him. While we take our responsibilities seriously, we also recognize that we can relax our grip on our work and careers, our families and ministry, and give them over to God in faith. We can take time each day to tune out the distractions, put away the tense restlessness, and reflect in gratitude on the wonder of God’s love and faithfulness.
So feel free to stop and take a breath. Get some real rest. —Poh Fang Chia
