Min Joong-ki’s special counsel team raided the office and residence of Chairman Jeong Mo of the Jeong Jin-ki Media and Culture Foundation on the 29th. Chairman Jeong is the daughter of the late founder Jeong Jin-ki, who established Maeil Business Newspaper, and the spouse of Chairman Jang Dae-hwan of Maeil Business Newspaper.

The special counsel team reportedly seized safes containing key documents and items during the raid on Chairman Jeong’s office inside the Maekyung Media Group headquarters in Jung-gu, Seoul. The team is investigating allegations that former National Education Committee Chairman Lee Bae-yong gifted a card with congratulatory remarks on the election of former President Yoon Suk-yeol in March 2022, along with a 5-don gold turtle, to Mrs. Kim Keon-hee and was appointed as National Education Committee Chairman in return. It is known that the special counsel team has secured evidence suggesting Chairman Jeong was involved in the alleged improper solicitation process between the two. Chairman Jeong is currently a reference person in this case. Legal circles noted that “a seizure and search targeting a reference person is unusual.”

Meanwhile, the special counsel team summoned Shin, the spouse of former Presidential Office Personnel Secretary Lee Won-mo, on the same day to investigate controversies surrounding the “civilian boarding of the presidential aircraft.” Shin, despite being a civilian, reportedly received a diplomatic passport under the status of “other attendant” and boarded the presidential aircraft upon returning from a NATO visit by former President Yoon Suk-yeol and his spouse in June 2022, sparking public debate.

The special counsel team is also investigating allegations of embezzlement and breach of trust involving Shin, the daughter of Honorary Chairman Shin Joon-sik of Jaseng Hospital of Korean Medicine.

민중기 특검팀이 정진기언론문화재단 정모 이사장의 사무실과 자택을 29일 압수 수색했다. 정 이사장은 매일경제신문을 창업한 고(故) 정진기 창업주의 딸로, 장대환 매일경제신문 회장의 배우자다.

특검은 이날 서울 중구 매경미디어그룹 본사 내 정 이사장 사무실을 압수 수색하며 주요 서류와 물품을 보관한 금고 등을 압수해 간 것으로 전해졌다. 특검은 이배용 전 국가교육위원장이 2022년 3월 윤석열 전 대통령이 당선된 후 김건희 여사에게 당선 축하 인사말이 적힌 카드와 함께 5돈짜리 금거북이를 선물하고 그 대가로 국가교육위원장에 임명된 의혹을 수사 중인데, 정 이사장이 두 사람의 부정 청탁 과정에 관여한 정황을 확보한 것으로 알려졌다. 이 사건과 관련해 정 이사장은 참고인 신분이다. 법조계에선 “참고인에 대한 압수 수색이 이례적”이란 말도 나왔다.

이런 가운데 특검은 이날 이원모 전 대통령실 인사비서관의 배우자 신모씨를 소환해 ‘대통령 전용기 민간인 탑승’ 논란 등을 조사했다. 신씨는 2022년 6월 윤석열 전 대통령 부부가 나토 순방에 나섰을 당시, 민간인인데도 ‘기타 수행원’ 신분으로 관용 여권을 발급받고 귀국 때는 대통령 전용기도 탑승해 논란이 일었다.

특검은 신준식 자생한방병원 명예 이사장의 딸인 신씨의 횡령·배임 혐의도 수사 중이다.
