“Present arms! Wedding salute!”

On the 27th of last month at a wedding hall in Seoul, six men dressed in Army uniforms raised their swords above their heads in unison at the emcee’s command, clashing them together. The bride and groom entered through the gap between them. This was a “sword ceremony” (禮刀式), a ritual where soldiers in uniform welcome guests at events like weddings by assuming the “present arms” posture. Originally, this ceremony is performed by active-duty soldiers. However, the men in Army uniforms that day were neither official honor guards nor active-duty soldiers—they were part-time workers.

The sword ceremony, symbolizing the dignity and honor of military personnel, is now being commercially exploited at civilian wedding venues. Private companies have recently been actively promoting sword ceremony services online with slogans like “realizing the dreams of military veterans.” The cost ranges from 200,000 to 250,000 Korean won per session. Though not cheap, there is a long waiting list online. Widely shared on social media, it has become a “must-do” for some couples-to-be. A source from the wedding hall told this newspaper, “Demand from reserve customers is high, with bookings filled months in advance,” adding, “The ceremony can be conducted not only in Army uniforms but also in regular military or special forces attire.”

Having part-time workers, not active-duty soldiers or official honor guards, wear military uniforms and perform military rituals violates the law (Act on the Regulation of Military Uniforms and Military Equipment). Non-military personnel wearing uniforms face penalties of up to one year in prison or a fine of up to 10 million Korean won. A retired Army lieutenant general stated, “Military uniforms symbolize honor, representing loyalty and sacrifice to the nation and its people. Using them for commercial purposes seriously undermines the military’s honor.”

The Ministry of National Defense has begun investigating private wedding companies offering sword ceremonies as complaints increase. A Ministry official said, “We have requested explanations from the wedding companies involved in the complaints,” adding, “We are reviewing whether violations occurred and will refer the cases to investigative authorities if violations are confirmed.”

“받들어 칼! 축혼(祝婚)!”

지난 27일 서울 시내 한 웨딩홀. 육군 정복을 차려입은 남성 여섯 명이 사회자 외침에 맞춰 허리춤에 찬 칼을 머리 위로 빼들어 서로 맞댔다. 이들 사이로 주인공인 신랑과 신부가 입장했다. 결혼식 등의 행사 때 정복 입은 군인들이 ‘받들어 칼’ 자세로 입장객을 환영하는 의식인 ‘예도식(禮刀式)’이었다. 원래 예도식은 현역 군인들이 해야 한다. 그러나 이날 육군 정복을 입은 남성들은 정식 의장대도 현역 군인도 아닌 아르바이트생들이었다.

군인의 위신과 명예를 상징하는 예도식이 민간 결혼식장에서 상업적으로 활용되고 있다. 민간 업체들은 최근 ‘군 전역자의 로망 실현’ 같은 문구를 내걸고 온라인에서 예도식 서비스를 적극 홍보하고 있다. 비용은 한 번에 200만~250만원 선이다. 싼값은 아니지만 온라인에선 대기 줄이 밀려 있다. 소셜미디어상에서 널리 공유되면서 일부 예비 부부들 사이에선 ‘결혼 필수 코스’로 자리 잡는 모양새다. 한 웨딩홀 관계자는 본지 문의에 “예비역 고객들 수요가 높아 예약이 몇 개월 밀렸다”라며 “육군 정복뿐 아니라 일반 군복이나 특전사 복장으로도 진행할 수 있다”고 했다.

현역 군인이나 정식 의장대가 아닌 아르바이트생들이 군복을 입고 군 의식을 하는 건 법(군복 및 군용장구의 단속에 관한 법률) 위반이다. 군인이 아닌 사람이 군복을 착용할 경우 1년 이하의 징역 또는 1000만원 이하의 벌금으로 처하게 돼 있다. 한 예비역 육군 중장은 “군복은 국가와 국민에 대한 충성과 희생을 상징하는 명예의 상징”이라며 “이를 상업적으로 이용하는 건 군의 명예를 심각하게 훼손하는 것”이라고 했다.

국방부는 예도 서비스를 하는 민간 웨딩 업체와 민원이 늘면서 조사에 착수했다. 국방부 관계자는 “민원이 제기된 웨딩 업체들에 소명을 요구했다”며 “위법 여부를 검토 중이며, 위반이 확인될 경우 수사 기관에 고발 조치를 할 예정”이라고 했다.
