이 노래는 북미 원주민 체로키족에 관한 이야기다.

그들은 체로키 국가를 가져가고는, 우리를 이 보호구역에 몰아넣었어

Took away our ways of life, the tomahawk and the bow and knife.

그들은 우리 삶의 방식인 돌도끼와 화살과 칼 모두를 빼앗았어.

Took away our native tongue and taught their English to our young.

우리 모국어를 빼앗고는 우리 아이들에게 영어를 배우게 했어

And all the beads we made by hand, are nowadays made in Japan.

우리가 손으로 만들던 모든 구슬 공예품, 지금은 일본이 만들고 있지.

체로키 사람들, 체로키 부족, 명예롭게 살다가, 명예롭게 죽으리

They took the whole Indian nation, locked us on this reservation.

비록 셔츠와 타이를 착용하고 있어도, 나의 가슴 깊은 곳에선 여전히 인디언이야
