  Section 20 : Hapdong(合同,합동 - Joint Cooperation)... Ding it all together... Chapter 169.

合同(합동)은 온 세상이 다 함께 하는 것이다.

  Joint Cooperation(Hapdong) means that the entire world works together as one.

온 세상 모두가 德(덕)의 뜻을 숭상하면 물리가 없어진다.

  If everyone in the world reveres the meaning of Virtue(德,덕),

  material laws and desires(物理,물리) will disappear.  

온 세상 모두가 물리를  숭상하면 德(덕)의 뜻이 없어진다.

  If evetyone in the world reveres material laws and desires(物理,물리),

  the meaning of Virtue(德,덕) will disappear.  

따라서 철인이 인간을 구제함에 시기를 자세히 헤아려 德(덕)과 물리를 알맞게 한다.

  Therefore, when a wise sage(philosopher) saves humanity,

   they carefully discern the timing and circumstances to properly balance

    Virtue(德,덕) and material laws(物理,물리).

合同者는 擧世也라  (합동자는 거세야라)

  Joint cooperation(Hapdong) encompasses the entire world.

擧世 尙德意면 無物理요 (거세 상덕의면 무물리요)

  If the whole world highly esteems the meaning of Virtue(德,덕),

  material laws and desires(物理,물리) will vanish.

擧世 尙物理면 無德意니 (거세 상물리면 무덕의니)

  If the whole world highly esteems material laws and desires(物理,물리),

  the meaning of Virtue(德,덕) will vanish. 

是以로 哲人 濟人에 相德物斟時니라. (시이로 철인 제인에   상덕물짐시니라.)

  Therefore, when a wise sage saves humanlty,

   they balance Virtue(德,덕) and material laws(物理,물리) by carefully weighing

    the timing and circumatances. 

 [풀이]

온 세상의 모두가 함께 할 수 있는 공감대를 조성하는 내용을 가르침은 유사이래 아직 없다.

  Since the dawn of history, there has never been a teaching that successfully

   builds a consensus in which the entire world can participate.

그것이 在世理化(재세이화)가 의미하는 경제적 풍요와  弘益人間(홍익인간)이 의미하는

인간적인 평등이 균형을 이루지 못하였기 때문이다.

  This is because a proper balance has not been achieved between the economic abundance

   implied by Jaese-iwha(在世理化,재세이화 -ruling the world with reason and truth) and the human

   equality implied by Hongik-ingan(弘益人間,홍익인간 -broadly benefiting humanity).

제 169사는 바로 이 점을 지적하고 있다.

  Chapter 169 points out precisely this issue.

온 세상 모두가 뜻을 하나로 하기 위해서는 현재의 상황이 경제적 풍요와 인간적 평등에서

어느쪽으로 기우는 가를 살펴 그 균형을 잡아 어느쪽을 낯 추고 어느쪽을 높이는가를 헤아린다는 것이다.

  To unite the minds of everyone in the world,

  one must examine whether the current situation leans toward economic abundance or human equality,

  and restore balance by discerning which side to lower and which side to raise.

物理(물리)란 곧 경제적 개념인 在世理化(재세이화)를 의미하며

德意(덕의)란 곧 인간적 평등개념인 弘益人間(홍익인간)을 의미한다.

  Here, ;Mulli'(物理,물리 - material / physical laws) signifies Jaese-iwha(在世理化,재세이화),

  which is an economic concept, while'Deogui'(德意,덕의 - the meaning of virtue)

  signifies Hongik-ingan(弘益人間,홍익인간), which is a concept of human equality.

이 내용은 오늘날의 자유와 평등의 개념과도 같다.

  This substance aligns with today′s concepts of freedom and equality.

한때 자유와 평등을 대립개념으로 보았으나 점차 상호 보완개념으로 보게 되는 것이 오늘날의 현실이며

이것이 그동안 많은 시행착오를 거쳐서 이루어졌으나 이 개념이 우리에게는 이미 존재하고 있는 것이다.

  While freedom and equality were once viewed as opposing concepts,

   the reality today is that they are increasingly recognized as complementary.

   Aithough this realization has been achieved through many trials and errors over time,

    this very concept already exists within our tradition.

  ※ Key Terms.

      ● 合同(합동) : Joint Cooperation / Collaboration.
