South Korea striker signed on a free transfer from hometown club Pohang Steelers in January 2007. Known as 'The Lion King' by fans in his homeland, he first came to the attention with some impressive performances as a 19-year-old during the 1998 World Cup in France, but was controversially omitted from the 2002 tournament which his homeland co-hosted with Japan and missed the 2006 event with a serious knee injury. Fitness problems also put an early end to an unsuccessful loan spell with Werder Bremen during the 2000/01 season, but he returned to Pohang and, after a two-year spell with Gwangju Sangmu due to military service, was the K-League's top scorer with the Steelers in 2005 and 2006. |
