Most nature poetry admires the world. Yours listens to it. The premise underneath Teachings of Mother Nature is quietly profound, that if words carry the knowledge, emotion, and will of the one who speaks them, then creation, spoken by God, must carry His knowledge, emotion, and will as well. So you do not simply describe a flower or a bird. You sit with each creature in meditation and prayer, and you ask, humbly, for the grace to perceive the Maker's hidden intention inside it, and only then do you shape what you receive into a poem. That is not decoration. It is a discipline of attention, the old conviction that the whole world is charged through with the One who made it, practiced one creature at a time. I do not take lightly that your gratitude was hard-won, that your faith was forged through real suffering before it ever became praise. Professor Bong-Gun Kim called your work the fruit of prophetic intellect, and I understand why. And you do not keep any of it to yourself. You labor to carry these poems into many languages, so that a reader anywhere in the world might catch even a glimpse of what you saw. This is a poet trying to translate creation itself.

대부분의 자연시가 세상을 찬미합니다. 그러나 선생님의 시는 세상을 경청합니다. 『대자연의 가르침』의 근본 전제는 조용히 깊습니다. 만약 말이 그것을 말하는 이의 지식, 감정, 의지를 담고 있다면, 하나님께서 말씀하신 창조 또한 그분의 지식, 감정, 의지를 담고 있어야 한다는 것입니다. 그래서 선생님은 단순히 꽃이나 새를 묘사하지 않으십니다. 각 피조물과 함께 명상과 기도로 앉아, 그 안에 숨겨진 창조주의 뜻을 깨닫기 위한 은혜를 겸손히 구하시고, 그때 받은 것을 시로 형상화하십니다. 그것은 장식이 아니라 집중의 훈련이며, 세상 전체가 창조주로 충만하다는 오래된 확신을 한 생명씩 실천하는 것입니다.

There is a specific kind of silence that follows a book like Teachings of Mother Nature, not the silence of indifference, but the silence of someone sitting with something they do not yet have words for. I have read enough nature poetry to know the difference, and what you built in these pages belongs to the rarer category. Most writers in this genre treat words containing the speaker's knowledge emotion and will which are aspects of his character and God's words containing His knowledge emotion and will and in this poetry book longing to meditate on the creatures of nature that God created through His word and to discover and express His intention as suggested by each creature as plot devices. You treat them as metaphors for the trauma that follows us wherever we go. That distinction matters more than it might first appear, because plot devices ask the reader to follow, but metaphors ask them to recognise, and recognition is what makes a reader stop mid-page, set the book down, and sit with a feeling they have been carrying unnamed for years. That is what Teachings of Mother Nature does. The way you take this book is written both in English and Korean and words contain the speaker's knowledge emotion and will which are aspects of his character therefore it can be said that God's words contain His knowledge emotion and will, and the way in this poetry book I longed to meditate on the creatures of nature that God created through His word and to discover and express His intention as suggested by each creature, and the way however it was impossible for a foolish human to discover the mysterious and wonderful meaning of creation hidden in the vast natural world therefore I engaged in meditation prayers on each poetic object and begged for His grace and wisdom to let me know the meaning of the Creator hidden in that object and I shaped the inspiration gained from such a process into a poem, and the way I earnestly hope that such poems will convey even a small part of the sublime intention of God which He wants to show to humans through nature to readers all over the world and to achieve this I plan to publish this poetry book translated into multiple languages both domestically and internationally like my previous poetry books Prescription of Civilization Flowers of Gratitude and Captive of Crazy Love, is not something most writers attempt, because it requires a specific kind of courage that has nothing to do with bravery and everything to do with honesty. You had it. The book shows it on every page.

대부분의 작가들은 말이 화자의 지식, 감정, 의지를 담고 있으며 그것이 그의 인격의 일부라는 점, 그리고 하나님의 말씀은 그분의 지식, 감정, 의지를 담고 있다는 점을 단지 서사 장치로 다룹니다. 그러나 선생님은 하나님께서 말씀으로 창조하신 자연의 피조물들을 명상하고, 각 피조물이 암시하는 창조주의 뜻을 발견하고 표현하려는 갈망을 시 속에 담으셨습니다. 선생님은 그것들을 단순한 플롯 장치가 아니라, 우리가 어디를 가든 따라오는 상처의 은유로 다루십니다. 이 구분은 처음에는 사소해 보일지 모르지만, 사실은 매우 중요합니다. 플롯 장치는 독자에게 따라오라고 요구하지만, 은유는 독자에게 ‘인식하라’고 요구합니다. 인식은 독자가 책장을 넘기다 멈추고, 책을 내려놓고, 오랫동안 이름 붙이지 못한 감정을 붙들게 만듭니다. 『어머니 자연의 가르침』이 바로 그런 일을 합니다.

이 책은 영어와 한국어로 쓰였으며, 말은 화자의 지식, 감정, 의지를 담고 있으므로 하나님의 말씀 역시 그분의 지식, 감정, 의지를 담고 있다고 할 수 있습니다. 그러나 광대한 자연 세계 속에 숨겨진 창조의 신비롭고 놀라운 의미를 어리석은 인간이 스스로 발견하는 것은 불가능하기에, 선생님은 각 시적 대상마다 명상 기도를 드리며 창조주의 뜻을 깨닫게 해 달라고 은혜와 지혜를 간구하셨습니다. 그렇게 얻은 영감을 시로 빚어내셨습니다. 그리고 그러한 시들이 하나님께서 자연을 통해 인간에게 보여주고자 하시는 숭고한 의도의 작은 일부라도 전 세계 독자들에게 전달되기를 간절히 바라셨습니다. 이를 위해 『문명의 처방전』, 『감사꽃』, 『미친 사랑의 포로』와 같은 이전 시집들처럼 국내외 여러 언어로 번역·출판하려는 계획을 세우셨습니다. 이는 대부분의 작가들이 시도하지 않는 일입니다. 용기라기보다 정직에서 비롯된 특별한 담대함이 필요하기 때문입니다. 선생님은 그것을 지니셨습니다. 책은 그것을 모든 페이지에서 보여줍니다.

I longed to meditate on the creatures of nature that God created through His word, and to discover and express His intention as suggested by each creature. That line has been sitting in my head for three days now. I don't say that lightly. I read for a living, poetry and spiritual literature specifically, a lot of it, most weeks, and the truth is most of it doesn't survive past the moment I close the file. I finish, I make a note, I move to the next one. Yours didn't let me do that. I kept coming back to that exact moment, trying to work out why it worked on me the way it did, and I think I've figured it out, so I'll just tell you plainly instead of dressing it up.

I'm not going to open with a line about your imagery or your inspiration. You've already heard that from everyone who has finished this book, and by now it probably reads as noise rather than as anything true. What actually struck me was a decision, not a feeling. You had a clean, easy off ramp at that moment, the version where the sublime intention of God shown to humans through nature softens, gives the reader somewhere comfortable to land, and you didn't take it. You left it exactly as open ended as it apparently was for you. That refusal is the entire book, as far as I'm concerned. It's the reason TEACHINGS OF MOTHER NATURE doesn't read like most poetry and spiritual literature, which tend to either wrap themselves in a neat resolution that arrives a little too quickly, or collapse entirely under their own weight and leave the reader with nothing but the meditation itself. Yours does neither. It just tells the truth and trusts the reader to sit in it. That's rarer than people think, and it's the reason I'm writing to you instead of moving on to the next book on my list.

이 문장이 제 머릿속에 사흘째 머물러 있습니다. 저는 가볍게 말하지 않습니다. 저는 직업상 시와 영적 문학을 읽습니다. 매주 많은 작품을 읽지만, 대부분은 파일을 닫는 순간 사라집니다. 읽고, 메모하고, 다음 작품으로 넘어갑니다. 그러나 선생님의 글은 저를 그렇게 두지 않았습니다. 저는 계속 그 순간으로 돌아가, 왜 그것이 제게 그렇게 작용했는지 곱씹었고, 이제는 이유를 알 것 같아 꾸밈없이 말씀드립니다.

저는 선생님의 이미지나 영감에 대해 이야기하며 시작하지 않겠습니다. 이미 이 책을 끝까지 읽은 모든 이들이 그런 말을 했을 것이고, 지금쯤 그것은 진실이라기보다 소음처럼 들릴지도 모릅니다. 저를 실제로 사로잡은 것은 감정이 아니라 결정이었습니다. 선생님께서는 그 순간에 쉬운 출구를 선택할 수도 있었습니다. 곧, 하나님께서 자연을 통해 인간에게 보여주시는 숭고한 의도가 부드럽게 풀려 독자가 편안히 안착할 수 있는 버전을 택할 수도 있었지만, 그렇게 하지 않으셨습니다. 선생님은 그것을 당시 선생님께 열린 그대로 남겨두셨습니다. 그 거절이야말로, 제게는 이 책 전체입니다.

그것이 『대자연의 가르침』이 대부분의 시와 영적 문학과 달리 읽히는 이유입니다. 많은 작품들이 너무 빨리 도착하는 깔끔한 결말에 스스로를 감싸거나, 혹은 자기 무게에 무너져 독자에게 명상만 남기곤 합니다. 그러나 선생님의 작품은 둘 다 아닙니다. 그저 진실을 말하고, 그 안에 머물도록 독자를 신뢰합니다. 그것은 사람들이 생각하는 것보다 훨씬 드문 일이며, 제가 다음 책으로 넘어가지 않고 이렇게 선생님께 편지를 쓰는 이유입니다.
