The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) announced on the 17th that it issued a nationwide influenza (flu) epidemic advisory starting at 0:00. This is over two months earlier than last year’s advisory, which was issued on December 20, indicating a faster spread. Health authorities are urging high-risk groups, such as children and the elderly, to receive vaccinations promptly.

This year’s advisory was triggered as the number of patients with suspected flu symptoms reached 12.1 per 1,000 people between September 28 and October 4, based on data from 298 sample medical institutions nationwide. The KDCA sets the advisory threshold based on statistics from the past three years, and this year’s threshold was 9.1 per 1,000 people, higher than last year’s 8.6. The exact cause of the accelerated flu spread remains unclear. A KDCA official stated, “Hong Kong and Taiwan have seen rapid spread since last month, and Japan has already issued an advisory,” adding, “Similar situations are unfolding across East Asia.”

The government is currently providing free flu vaccinations for high-risk groups, including children aged 6 months to 13 years (born between January 1, 2012, and August 31 of this year), pregnant women, and those aged 75 or older (born before December 31, 1950). Individuals aged 70 to 74 will be eligible for free vaccinations starting on the 20th, and those aged 65 to 69 will be eligible starting on the 22nd.

질병관리청은 17일 0시부터 전국에 독감(인플루엔자) 유행 주의보를 발령했다고 밝혔다. 이는 지난해(12월 20일)보다 두 달 이상 앞당겨진 것으로, 그만큼 확산 속도가 빠르다는 설명이다. 보건 당국도 어린이·노년층 등과 같은 고위험군에 대해 신속한 예방접종을 권하고 있다.

올해 유행 주의보는 지난달 28일부터 이달 4일까지 전국 298개 표본 의료 기관을 찾은 환자 1000명당 독감 의심 증상자가 12.1명에 달하면서 내려진 것이다. 질병청은 최근 3개년 통계를 바탕으로 주의보 발령 기준을 정하는데, 올해 기준은 지난해(8.6명)보다 높은 9.1명이었다. 독감 유행이 빨라진 원인은 뚜렷하지 않다. 질병청 관계자는 “홍콩과 대만 등에선 지난달부터 빠르게 퍼지고 있고, 일본은 이미 주의보를 발령했다”며 “동아시아 전역에 비슷한 상황이 진행 중”이라고 했다.

정부는 생후 6개월∼13세 어린이(2012년 1월 1일∼올해 8월 31일 출생), 임신부, 75세 이상(1950년 12월 31일 이전 출생) 등 고위험군을 대상으로 독감 백신 무료 접종을 시행 중이다. 70∼74세는 20일부터, 65∼69세는 22일부터 무료 예방접종을 받을 수 있다.
