The Bible Text from https://www.bible.com/bible/111/JHN.20.NIV
The Resurrection of Jesus
The Empty Tomb
Early on the first day of the week (Sunday), while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb (without an appropriate preparation) and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance. (The stone blocking the grave had been moved away.)
So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they have put him!” (Mary Magdalene reported the disciples that the body of the Lord stolen because of the absence of the body.)
So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb.
Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. (Peter and other disciple, probably John, went to the tomb ahead and behind.)
He bent over and looked in at the strips of linen lying there but did not go in. (John found shroud there.)
Then Simon Peter came along behind him and went straight into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there, 7 as well as the cloth that had been wrapped around Jesus’ head. The cloth was still lying in its place, separate from the linen. (The tomb was neatly cleaned up but without the body.)
Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went inside. He saw and believed.
(They still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.) (Both if them realized the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, not because of the prophecies of the Scripture but from their own witnesses.)
Then the disciples went back to where they were staying. (They went back to their staying place.)
Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene
Now Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb 12 and saw two angels in white, seated where Jesus’ body had been, one at the head and the other at the foot. (Mary who stayed there found two angels in the tomb.)
They asked her, “Woman, why are you crying?” “They have taken my Lord away,” she said, “and I don’t know where they have put him.” (Mary still thought that the body of Jesus should be stolen and cried.)
At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realize that it was Jesus. (Jesus showed up to Mary but she didn't realize Him because it was beyond of her expectation.)
He asked her, “Woman, why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?” Thinking he was the gardener, she said, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him.” (Mary even asked Him, whom she thought to be a gardener, where he moved the body of Jesus to.)
Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means “Teacher”). (Jesus called her name Mary. and Mary came to realize He is the risen Lord Jesus.)
Jesus said, “Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. (The risen Lord avoided Mary's contact because His body had been changed.) Go instead to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’ ” (Jesus told her to tell the disciples that He will depart soon to the Father God.)
Mary Magdalene went to the disciples with the news: “I have seen the Lord!” And she told them that he had said these things to her. (Mary went to the disciples and testified her encounter with the risen Lord.)
Jesus Appears to His Disciples
On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them (Jesus came to the closed room where the disciples hiding from the Jewish leaders. The wall and closed door could not block the entrance of the risen, so that the transformed body of Jesus.) and said, “Peace be with you!” (He blessed the peace to them; no more fear, no more confusion, no more agony. Nothing overrides the peace of the Risen Lord.)
After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord. (The joy of the disciples seeing the wounds of the risen Lord was immeasurable.)
Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” (Jesus assures the peace to the disciples and commissioned them to the ministry following after Him.)
And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. (Breathing on them might be the last approval ceremony for the disciples bestowing the upcoming presence of the Holy Spirit for the apostles.)
If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.” (The ministry of the disciples, so called apostles, should be the preaching the Gospel, which is forgiving the sin and bringing those forgiven to the eternal life where no condemnation rules.)
Jesus Appears to Thomas
Now Thomas (also known as Didymus), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came.
So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.” (Thomas "the funny guy- 14:5," was not there with Jesus, and later said that he would not believe until he saw Jesus himself. He'd like to have the experience the resurrection of the Lord first hand.)
A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” (Jesus came back to them through the closed door, and blessed them with peace.)
Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.” (Jesus was kind enough offering to Thomas to check the wounds.)
Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!” (Thomas came to the full understanding of Jesus' Lordship and Divinity. He will die for this truth as much as those other exuberated disciples.)
Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” (Believing unseen is such a blessing. But believing by seeing what Jesus has shown is also a huge blessings. Jesus had showed us enough to see and believe. Even Mary saw the risen Lord when she was called by her name. Have you ever heard that Jesus called you by your name? Rev. 3:20)
The Purpose of John’s Gospel
Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. (The John's report on his encounter with Jesus is a small part of what Jesus had done.)
But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. (John intended the salvation of the readers with this report. The Gospel is good enough for our salvation; what to believe, and how to live. We call Him Jesus, His personal name, because His name is glorified with His death and resurrection by God. Phil. 2:9-11)
