Cottonwood paints surprisingly
Standing in a row

By the river in my town
The sky is a drawing paper

Sometimes cottonwood

Whenever it meets gentle breeze

A brush all over itself

Over the sky draws a picture

On a summer day

After having a cold bath in the river

I would dry my wet body
While lying down on the gravel patch

Clouds in the sky
Seeming to be working so, so hard

Not trying to erase any of the artwork

Of that Poplar’s

Appreciation Review

You might feel like childlike innocence, pure and clean.
I wish I could post it in the elementary school’s Korean language textbook.

When it comes to its texts, I find there's nothing to throw away.
It's a shame on me that I can't fully express the sense in English.

Cottonwood’s drawing is like the one of innocent kids.
It’s like drawing a picture over the sky with all imagination.

The poet leisurely appreciates the poplar tree’s drawing.
The poet is a viewer of the drawing.

Clouds think they are getting in the way of painting the work.
They try very hard not to cause any damage to the picture.

But it’s not the case.
The clouds are part of a painting of the cottonwood’s.

Clouds are participants, not disturbers.
So the Poplar’s drawing is also drawn in my heart just the way it is.

감상평

맑고 깨끗한 동심이 한껏 느껴지는 동시입니다.

초등학교 국어 교과서에 실리면 좋겠습니다.

어느 단어 하나 버릴 것이 없습니다.

영어로 충분히 그 느낌을 다 살리지 못하는 것이 너무 아쉽습니다.

미루나무의 그림은 아이들이 그리는 순수한 그림과 같습니다.

상상력이 마음껏 발휘되어 하늘에 그림을 그리고 있습니다.

시인은 미루나무가 그린 그림을 감상합니다.

시인은 미루나무 그림의 독자입니다.

구름은 자신이 미루나무 그림에 방해가 된다고 생각합니다.

미루나무에게 피해를 주지 않으려고 무지무지 애를 씁니다.

하지만 사실 그렇지 않습니다.

구름은 미루나무 그림의 일부입니다.

구름은 방해자가 아니라 참여자입니다.

미루나무가 그린 그림이 제 마음 속에도 그대로 그려집니다.

미루나무도 그림 그릴 줄 안다

우리 마을 강가에 늘어선

미루나무는

하늘이 도화지다

미루나무는 온몸이 붓이 되어

살랑살랑 바람이 불 때마다

하늘에다

그림을 그린다

여름날

강에서 멱을 감고 나와

자갈밭에 드러누워

몸을 말리다 보니

하늘의 구름이

미루나무가 그리는 그림을

지우게 될까 봐

무지무지 애쓰고 있다
