Korean Polychrome Paintings

Talk about traditional Korean polychrome paintings.

We can categorize paintings as Korean or Western.

Roughly speaking, the difference between the two

comes down to surfaces and lines.

Western paingtings place an emphasis on surfaces.

Wide brushes are used to fill all areas.

In contrast, Korean ink paintings emphasize lines.

Finer brushes are used, playing up the beauty

of blank space.

Korea has polychrome paintings as well.

They use solid pigments, which are ground up

and mixed with water ot fill the spaces.

Usually, they are drawn on thick paper.

Folk paintings, which are familiar to us,

are a type of polychrome painting.

Modern Korean colored paintings are not

that different from Western ones.

At a casual glance, it's hard to tell the difference.

한국의 전통 채색화에 대해서 이야기해 주세요.

우리는 그림을 한국화와 서양화로 구분할 수 있다.

대략적으로 둘의 차이점은 면과 선에 있다.

서양화는 면을 중시한다.

넓은 붓을 사용해서 모든 면을 채색한다.

반면, 한국의 수묵화는 선을 강조한다.

끝이 가는 붓을 사용하여 여백의 미를 강조한다.

물론 한국에도 채색화가 있다.

한국 채색화는 고체 안료를 갈아 물과 섞어서

면을 채운다.

주로 두꺼운 종이(장지)에 그리게 된다.

우리가 잘 아는 민화도 채색화의 한 종류이다.

현대 한국 채색화는 서양화와 그다지 다르지 않다.

얼핏 보기에는 한국화인지 서양화인지 구별하기가

쉽지 않다.

한국의 전통 채색화에 대해서 이야기해 주세요.

대략적으로 말해보자면, 한국화와 서양화는 

뚜렷한 차이가 있다. 

둘 사이의 차이점은 결국 면 혹은 선에 대한 

강조점에 있다. 

- Roughly speaking, there is a distinct difference 

  between Korean and Western paintings. 

 The difference between the two comes down to 

 the strong emphasis on surfaces or lines.

+ roughly speaking : 대략적으로 말하면

   (비인칭독립분사구문으로 관용어처럼 사용됨)

+ distinct difference : 뚜렷한(분명한) 차이점

+ come down to : ~로 귀결되다,결국~이 되다, 

                         ~에 이르다

+ an emphasis on : ~에의 강조

+ surfaces and lines : 면과 선​

서양화는 면에 중점을 두어 넓은 붓을 사용해서 

모든 면을 색칠한다. 

반면에, 한국 수묵화는 여백의 미를 강조하기 때문에 

가는 붓이 사용된다.

- Western paintings place an emphasis on surfaces, 

  so all areas are filled by wide brushes. 

  In contrast, Korean ink paintings play up 

  the beauty of blank space. 

  So finer brushes are used for them. ​

  얼핏봐서는, 그의 새 작품에서 크게 달라진 

  것이 없어 보였다.

그리기를 추천드려요. 저도 아직은 갈길이 먼
