A confrontation disrupted the Miss Universe 2025 preliminaries in Bangkok on Tuesday when dozens of contestants staged a mass walkout after Nawat Itsaragrisil, the event's Thai director, publicly humiliated Fatima Bosch, Miss Mexico, branding her a "dumbhead" and summoning security to eject her from a live-streamed ceremony.

The confrontation unfolded during Day 3 preliminaries at a Bangkok hotel, ahead of the November 21 finals at Impact Arena. Nawat Itsaragrisil, the 60-year-old president of Miss Grand International and director of Miss Universe Thailand, singled out the 25-year-old Fatima Bosch during a sashing event broadcast on the official Miss Universe Thailand Facebook page. He accused her of defying instructions from her national director to post promotional content on Instagram celebrating Thailand as host country, including sponsor activities. Nawat Itsaragrisil said: "Fatima Bosch, where are you? I heard you [did] not agree to post everything about Thailand."

Ms Bosch, an advocate for women's rights from Mexico's Tabasco state, rose to defend herself, insisting she followed guidance from the Miss Universe Mexico organisation that the contest—a personal initiative by Mr Itsaragrisil—was not an official requirement.

She said: "I'm here representing my country, and it's not my fault you have problems with my organisation."

Mr Itsaragrisil interrupted, saying: "No, you must listen to me first, then argue with me. I didn't give you the opportunity to talk. I'm still talking!"

He then labelled her a "dumbhead"—later claiming he meant she caused "damage"—and called for security.

He warned: "If anyone wants to continue the contest, sit down. If you step out, the rest of the girls continue."

Ms Bosch then strode out, coat in hand. In solidarity, around 75 contestants followed, including reigning Miss Universe 2024 Victoria Kjaer Theilvig of Denmark.

She said: "This is about women's rights. This is not how things should be handled. To trash another girl is beyond disrespectful... That's why I'm taking my coat and I'm walking out."

Nicole Peiliker-Visser, Miss Bonaire, pleaded for calm, but the exodus halted proceedings.

Footage of the confrontation, captured live, spread online via an X post by pageant fan @Dainsleif_10 at 8:39am GMT, amassing over 615,000 views in hours.

Hashtags like #StandWithMexico and #JusticeForFatima trended globally, fuelling calls for Nawat Itsaragrisil's ousting.

The Miss Universe Organisation (MUO) condemned the outburst as abusive. Raul Rocha, MUO president, expressed "great indignation" in a video statement at Mr Itsaragrisil's "public aggression," accusing him of humiliating Ms Bosch, showing "lack of respect," and the "serious abuse" of intimidating a "defenceless woman" via security.

Raul Rocha said: "Nawat, you need to stop. You have forgotten the true meaning of what it means to be a genuine host."

Mr Rocha floated the idea of possible legal action. Meanwhile Lupita Jones, Mexico's national director, said: "No one can shut our voice."

Mr Itsaragrisil apologised via TikTok and social media on Wednesday, breaking down in tears as he addressed the 75 delegates directly.

He said: "If anyone feels bad, uncomfortable, or affected, I apologise to everyone. I especially apologised to the girls who were present. I did not intend to harm anyone." He disputed the "dumb" slur but admitted his words were misunderstood, claiming he said

Ms Bosch addressed reporters alongside Miss Iraq. Fatima Bosch said: "I truly love Thailand... But what your director just did was not respectful—he called me ‘dumb’ because he has problems with the organisation.

로이터 통신에 따르면 지난 4일 태국의 한 행사장에서 ‘제74회 미스 유니버스 본선 대회’를 앞두고 예비 행사가 열렸고, 참가자들이 웃으며 인사를 나누던 중 대회 조직위원회 고위 인사의 발언이 화근이 됐다.

나와트 이차라그리실 미스 유니버스 태국 담당 이사는 멕시코 대표 파티마 보쉬를 지목하며 “조직위의 요구 사항을 들어주지 않는다”고 지적했다. 앞서 조직위가 참가자들에게 대회 홍보용 게시물을 소셜미디어에 올려달라고 요청했는데, 보쉬는 멕시코 책임자와 상의해야 한다고 답했다. 나와트는 이를 협조 거부로 받아들여 보쉬를 공개 질책했다.

나와트는 “만약 당신이 멕시코 책임자의 말을 따르겠다면 당신은 멍청이(dummy)”라고 말했고, 보쉬가 항의하자 “내 얘기 안 끝났다. 들어라”며 언성을 높였다. 이어 보안 요원을 불러 보쉬를 행사장 밖으로 끌어내려 하자 참가자들 사이에서는 탄식이 흘러나왔다.

보쉬는 결국 자리를 박차고 나갔고, 전년도 우승자인 덴마크의 빅토리아 키에르 테일비히 등 다른 참가자들도 뒤따라 행사장을 나왔다. 나와트는 이에 아랑곳없이 “보안 요원, 문 닫아라. 여기서 나가면 나머지 참가자만으로 행사 계속 진행할 것”이라고 엄포를 놓았다.

이 상황이 온라인 생중계를 통해 고스란히 전달되면서 나와트의 무례한 언행에 대한 비난이 확산했다. 논란이 커지자 대회 조직위는 긴급 성명을 내고 나와트의 권한 박탈 등 법적 조치를 검토하겠다고 밝혔다. 이후 공식 기자회견을 연 나와트는 눈물을 흘리며 “누구에게도 상처 주려는 의도가 없었다”고 사과했다.

다음 날인 5일 미스 유니버스 대회 개막식은 예정대로 진행됐으며 미스 멕시코 보쉬의 모습도 포착됐다. 나와트는 이날 무대에 올라 “압박감이 컸다는 걸 이해해 달라. 여러분 모두를 존경하기 때문에 누구에게도 해를 끼칠 의도가 없었다”며 재차 사과했다.

한편 ‘미스 유니버스 본선 대회’는 오는 21일 태국에서 진행될 예정이다.
