Arrest motion of ex-PPP floor leader reported to parliament ahead of vote

SEOUL, Nov. 13 (Yonhap) -- The National Assembly on Thursday received a report of an arrest motion for Rep. Choo Kyung-ho, former floor leader of the main opposition People Power Party (PPP) who is under investigation over his alleged role in former President Yoon Suk Yeol's brief martial law attempt.

The motion will be put to a vote at a plenary session slated for Nov. 27 under an agreement by the ruling Democratic Party and the PPP.
​
Choo is accused of blocking other PPP lawmakers from participating in a parliamentary vote to lift Yoon's martial law decree by repeatedly changing the location of an emergency party meeting on the night of Dec. 3, when the martial law was declared.
​
The special counsel team suspects Choo, then the PPP floor leader, deliberately changed the venue at Yoon's request.
​
By law, sitting lawmakers are immune from arrest while parliament is in session and can only be put under arrest with the consent from the National Assembly.
​
If the motion is approved by a majority vote, a court will proceed with a hearing to determine whether to issue a warrant to formally arrest Choo.

국민의힘 추경호 의원에 대한 체포동의안이 오늘(13) 국회 본회의에 보고됐습니다.

추 의원는 지난 12.3 비상계엄 당시 국회의 해제 의결을 방해했다는 의혹을 받고 있습니다.

때문에 내란특검은 추 의원에게 ‘내란 중요임무 종사’ 혐의를 적용해 지난 3일 구속영장을 청구했고, 이틀 뒤 추 의원에 대한 체포동의안은 국회에 제출됐습니다.

국회 본회의에 보고됨에 따라 추 의원에 대한 체포동의안은 오는 27일 예정된 본회의에서 표결에 붙여질 예정입니다.

여당이 절대 다수 의석인 만큼 추 의원에 대한 체포동의안은 가결 가능성이 높을 것으로 전망되는 한편 추 의원은 불체포 특권 포기 의사를 밝힌 바 있습니다.
