Spy gadgets and a 110-year-old lemon are some of the artifacts and long-kept secrets of MI5, which are being laid bare, in a new exhibition.

🏰🚌영국 보안국(保安局, Security Service), 통칭 MI5는 16세기 엘리자베스 1세 여왕 직위 시절 국무상 프란시스 월싱엄 경이 창설한 비밀첩보부에서 유래한 조직으로, 1909년 당시 영국에서 활동하고 있던 독일 스파이들의 색출을 위해 조직된 방첩기관이자 보안기관이다. MI5라는 명칭은 1909년 10월 영국 국방위원회의 건의에 따라 창설된 비밀첩보부에 뿌리를 두고 있다. 1916년 군사정보국에 편입되면서 국내섹션은 MI5, 국외섹션은 MI6라고 불렸는데, 이처럼 군사정보(Military Intelligence)라는 별칭이 붙은 것은 이 조직들이 설립 초기에 군조직의 일부였기 때문이다. 1931년 보안국(Security Service)이라는 현재의 정식명칭을 부여받으며 아일랜드 테러리스트와 아나키스트 사안을 제외한 영국의 안보에 위협이 되는 모든 일들을 담당하는 역할을 맡았다.
