ABU DHABI, Nov. 18 (Yonhap) -- President Lee Jae Myung is set to hold summit talks with United Arab Emirates (UAE) President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan on Tuesday, with discussions expected to focus on cooperation in the defense industry, advanced technologies and energy.
Lee arrived in Abu Dhabi on Monday for a three-day state visit, the first stop of his inaugural Middle East trip since taking office in June, aimed at deepening economic cooperation with the UAE.

During the summit, the two leaders are scheduled to attend the signing of several memoranda of understanding, which are expected to cover collaboration in the defense industry, artificial intelligence, energy, cultural exchanges and other areas.

The UAE is the only Middle Eastern nation with which South Korea has established a special strategic partnership.
​
In a meeting with Korean residents on Monday, Lee expressed hopes for stronger economic cooperation with the UAE, saying the country could serve as a "base camp" for South Korea's efforts to expand and solidify its economic foothold in the Middle East.

The visit marks Lee's opening leg of his four-nation tour of the Middle East and Africa, which will later take him to South Africa for the Group of 20 summit, and to Egypt and Turkey.

(아부다비=연합뉴스) 임형섭 황윤기 기자 = 주요 20개국(G20) 정상회의 참석에 앞서 아랍에미리트(UAE)를 국빈 방문한 이재명 대통령은 18일(현지시간) 무함마드 빈 자이드 알 나흐얀 UAE 대통령과 정상회담을 가진다.

이 대통령은 이날 오전 공식 환영식과 정상회담에 이어 양해각서(MOU) 체결식, 정상 오찬까지 연이어 일정을 소화할 예정이다.

정상회담에서는 '특별 전략적 동반자 관계'인 양국의 협력을 강화하는 방안이 논의될 것으로 전망된다.

특히 이재명 정부가 방위산업 수출 다변화를 위해 노력하고 있는 만큼 MOU를 통해 실질적 성과가 도출될지 주목된다.

강훈식 대통령 비서실장 역시 이 대통령에 앞서 UAE를 방문, 무함마드 대통령에게 이 대통령의 친서를 전달하는 등 정상회담 준비에 신경을 쏟았다.

정상회담 이후에는 이 대통령과 UAE 주요 인사들이 참석한 가운데 UAE 대통령궁에서 양국 문화교류 행사가 열린다.

앞서 위성락 국가안보실장은 "신정부 출범 후 첫 중동 국가 방문을 통해 4대 핵심 분야인 투자, 국방·방산, 원전, 에너지를 넘어 첨단기술과 보건의료, 문화예술 등 양국 관계를 더 강화하고자 한다"고 UAE 방문의 의의를 소개했다.
