[틈틈이 영어공부] run down

- 영한 : (건전지 등이) 닳다/다되다, 쇠약해지다

- 영영 : to cause or allow (an engine, battery, etc) to lose power gradually and cease to function or (of an engine, battery, etc) to do this

- 활용 : 시계가 멎어있다 = stop, run down

- 다른 의미 : (누구/무엇)~을/를 비방하다/헐뜯다.

※You shouldn't run down others. = 다른 사람들을 헐뜯어서는 안 돼요.

- 예문 : 

You’ll soon run down the battery.
곧 배터리가 다 되게[나가게] 될 것이다.

The battery has run down.
배터리가 다 됐다.

(마크와 루스가 새 집을 샀는데 친구 루이스가 방문중이다 …)

Mark: (welcoming Louis in) You're our first visitor.

Louis: This is a big house! You have a lot of space now.

Louis: You have your work cut out for you.
루이스: 할일이 아주 많구먼.

Mark: We know but it's our house. Our first house.
마크: 알지 그래도 우리 집이니까. 우리가 처음 산 집.

Louis: I have lots of tools. I'd like to help.
루이스: 나한테 연장이 많이 있어. 나도 돕고 싶어.

Mark: Great! We can use all the help we can get.
마크: 잘됐네! 도움이 아주 많이 필요해.


[기억할만한 표현]
▶ (do something) by degrees: 천천히 조금씩
"I painted the whole house by degrees." 
(전 조금씩 집 전체를 모두 페인트칠했습니다.)

▶ show it (or something) off: 자랑하다 과시하다
"Stan bought a new motorcycle. He wants to show it off to me." 
(스탠이 새 오토바이를 샀습니다. 저한테 과시하고 싶어하죠.)

▶ (one) has (one's) work cut out for (one): 어려운 일을 앞두고 있다 할일이 많다
"You're going to teach elementary school? You have your work cut out for you." 
(초등학교를 가르치실 거라고요? 앞으로 할 일이 많으시겠네요.
