There has been an outbreak of whopping cough in New York State and when we began to look out it, we learned there were also outbreaks recently in Illinois, Texas, Oregon and Washington. We were puzzled because most parents are offered a wide range of vaccines to protect their children against everything from polio to measles to whooping cough. It turns out this is a case where some parents are opposed to vaccinations. ABC's John McKenzie takes a closer look.
In this New York City suburb, 17 children and two adults have contracted whopping cough. They and about 100 people who were exposed to it have been confined to their homes, where they take antibiotics.
"It is frustrating to see an outbreak like this because it's preventable." Health officials say it began with children who had not been vaccinated against the disease.
"Many of the parents who choose not to have their children immunized or themselves are young parents who've never seen the kinds of devastation that whooping cough can cause."
Whooping cough, also called pertussis, causes severe coughing fits and gasping for air. That can be fatal in infants. The number of reported cases in the U.S. is now the highest it's been in 40 years. Almost 10,000 last year, with 22 deaths. Health officials say part of the problem is that too many parents are refusing vaccines for their children. Every sate has some way for families to opt out of vaccination programs, many for religious or philosophical reasons. In Georgia and Pennsylvania, parental waivers have allowed 13 percent of kindergarten children to enter school without the usually required charts. In Colorado, it's up to 18 percent. Virginia Young stopped having her son immunized when he came down with fever, vomiting and seizures shortly after his first vaccination.
But refusing vaccines can come at a cost. A recent study in Colorado found that unvaccinated children were almost 6 times more likely to get whooping cough and 22 times more likely to get measles. And health officials say there is an increased risk for the whole community. A lesson parents in this New York suburb are now learning.
John McKenzie, ABC News, New York.
