SEOUL, Nov. 27 (Yonhap) -- The presidential office on Thursday vowed to take legal action after a fake statement issued under President Lee Jae Myung's name spread online, calling it a "very serious" crime.

In a press notice, the office confirmed that Lee had never released such a statement and stressed that all of the information in the fabricated statement was entirely false.

"The distribution of false and fabricated information using the president's name constitutes a very serious crime," the office said, pledging strong legal action.

Earlier in the day, a tabloid-style statement circulated across online communities, falsely claiming that Lee had declared the South Korean economy to be in a "foreign exchange crisis" and announced plans to raise the capital gains tax rate on foreign stock investments to 40 percent while introducing a new tax on stock holdings.

(서울=연합뉴스) 고동욱 기자 = 이재명 대통령 명의의 허위 담화문이 온라인에 유포돼 대통령실이 대응에 나섰다.

대통령실은 27일 공지를 통해 "해당 담화문을 발표한 사실이 없으며, 담화문의 내용은 명백한 허위"라고 밝혔다.

이어 "대통령 명의를 도용한 허위 조작 정보의 유포는 매우 심각한 범죄에 해당한다"고 지적했다.

또 "대통령실은 허위 조작 정보의 생산·유포 행위에 단호한 입장을 취해왔다"며 "이번 허위 담화문 유포 행위에 대해서도 강력한 법적 대응을 하겠다"고 했다.

이날 일부 온라인 커뮤니티 등에는 이 대통령이 현 한국 경제를 '외환위기 국면'이라고 규정하며 해외주식 양도소득세율 40%로 상향, 연 1%의 해외주식 보유세 신설 등을 시행한다는 내용의 담화문이 '받은 글' 형식으로 돌았다.
