[오늘의 묵상칼럼 ] 꺼지지 않는 불꽃: 자기 야망을 넘어서는 온전한 순종

   레위기 6장 12절은 제사장들에게 엄중하고도 명확한 지침을 내립니다. "제단 위의 불은 항상 피워 꺼지지 않게 할지니 제사장은 아침마다 나무를 그 위에서 태우고 번제물을 그 위에 벌여놓고 화목제의 기름을 그 위에서 불사를지며."

   이 구절은 구약 시대의 단순한 제사 절차를 넘어, 오늘날을 살아가는 성도의 영적 실재를 깊이 있게 조명합니다. 제단 위 불이 결코 꺼지지 않아야 했던 것처럼, 하나님의 은혜와 성령으로 점화된 우리 마음의 불꽃 또한 끊임없이 타올라야 합니다. 그러나 이 불은 저절로 유지되지 않습니다. 제사장이 매일 아침 성실하게 새 나무를 장만하고 쪼개어 제단에 올렸듯, 신앙의 지속성은 매일 아침 하나님 앞에 나의 아침을 드리는 구체적이고 정성 어린 수고를 요구합니다. 번제물 전체와 화목제의 기름을 올리는 행위는 헌신의 전면성과 하나님과의 깊은 교제를 상징합니다.

   바로 이 지점에서 오스왈드 챔버스의 통찰은 우리의 헌신이 지향해야 할 결정적인 방향을 제시합니다. 챔버스는 누가복음 18장 31절("보라 우리가 예루살렘으로 올라가노니")을 묵상하며, 예수께서 예루살렘으로 향하신 여정이 결코 개인적 영광이나 지상적 성공을 위한 것이 아니었음을 강조합니다. "우리가 '예루살렘'에 올라가는 것은 우리의 뜻이 아닌 하나님의 뜻을 이루기 위한 것임을 명심하십시오. 그리스도인의 삶에 우리의 야망이란 없습니다."

   참된 그리스도인의 삶에서 야망과 사명은 결코 섞일 수 없습니다. 야망은 하나님의 이름을 빌려 나의 야심과 성공이라는 성을 쌓는 것이지만, 사명은 나라는 자아를 하나님 앞에 태워 오직 주님의 영광만을 나타내는 것입니다. 많은 이들이 신앙이라는 이름으로 예루살렘에 올라가지만, 정작 그 마음속에는 자기 실현과 영적 성취라는 야망을 품곤 합니다. 그러나 예수 그리스도께서 걸어가신 예루살렘 길은 자기 부인과 십자가의 길이었습니다.

   우리의 영혼이라는 제단 위에 거룩한 불길이 꺼지지 않게 하려면, 날마다 내 안에서 솟아오르는 자기중심적 야망을 기꺼이 불태워야 합니다. 내가 원하는 미래, 내가 그려놓은 사역의 성과, 나를 증명하려는 욕구를 제단 위 나무처럼 태워버릴 때 비로소 순수한 순종의 화목제 기름이 하나님께 향기로운 냄새로 올려집니다. 매일 아침 자신의 비전 대신 하나님의 뜻을 선택하는 삶, 그것이 바로 꺼지지 않는 불꽃으로 살아가는 제사장의 삶입니다.

The Unquenchable Flame: Complete Obedience Beyond Personal Ambition

   Leviticus 6:12 gives a solemn and explicit instruction to the priests: "The fire on the altar must be kept burning continuously; it shall not go out. Every morning the priest is to add firewood, arrange the burnt offering on the fire, and burn the fat of the fellowship offerings on it."

   Far beyond a routine sacrificial protocol of the Old Testament, this passage profoundly illuminates the spiritual reality of a believer's daily life. Just as the fire on the altar was never to be extinguished, the flame in our hearts—kindled by God's grace and the Holy Spirit—must burn without ceasing. Yet, this holy fire does not sustain itself automatically. Just as the priest had to faithfully prepare, split, and lay fresh wood on the altar every single morning, spiritual consistency demands intentional and dedicated daily effort before the Lord. Laying down the entire burnt offering along with the fat of the peace offering symbolizes both total surrender and intimate fellowship with God.

   At this precise juncture, Oswald Chambers provides a decisive direction for where our devotion must lead. Reflecting on Luke 18:31 ("Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem"), Chambers emphasizes that Jesus’ journey toward Jerusalem was never aimed at personal glory or earthly achievement. He reminds us: "Mind that you remember what you are going up to Jerusalem for—to fulfill God's purpose, not your own. In a Christian’s life, there is no such thing as personal ambition."

   In a genuine Christian walk, ambition and mission can never be conflated. Ambition uses the name of God to build a kingdom of self-interest and success, whereas mission burns the self away on God’s altar to manifest His glory alone. Many attempt to "go up to Jerusalem" in the name of faith, yet secretly harbor ambitions of self-fulfillment and spiritual status. However, the road to Jerusalem that Jesus walked was strictly one of self-denial and the cross.

   To keep the holy fire burning continuously on the altar of our souls, we must willingly consume our self-centered ambitions every day. When we burn our own plans, our desired ministry outcomes, and our drive to prove ourselves—placing them on the wood like a daily sacrifice—the oil of true obedience ascends to God as a pleasing aroma. Choosing God’s sovereign will over our personal visions each morning is the true essence of living as a priest with an unquenchable flame.
