세상은… 천천히 깨어납니다.

[하남상불사]

아침이 밝아옵니다…
세상은… 천천히 깨어납니다. 부드러운 빛이… 대지 위로 조용히 퍼지며… 또 하나의 새로운 시작을 열어줍니다…

오래전… 부처님께서 수행자들에게 물으셨습니다…
“내 손톱 끝에 먼지와… 이 온 대지의 먼지 중… 어느 것이 더 많으냐…”
수행자들이 대답했습니다…
“세상의 먼지가… 훨씬 더 많습니다… 세존이시여…”
그러자 부처님께서 말씀하셨습니다…
“이와 같이… 인간이나 천상에 다시 태어나는 존재는… 매우 적고… 낮은 세계로 떨어지는 존재는… 훨씬 더 많다…”

왜일까?… 그들은… 사성제를 알지 못하기 때문이다…
고를 … 보지 못하고… 고의 원인을 알지 못하며… 고의 소멸을 깨닫지 못하고… 고로 부터 벗어나는 길을 모르기 때문이다…

낮은 세계 가운데 하나… 그것이 바로… 축생의 세계이다… 우리는 지금도… 그것을 볼 수 있다…
동물들은… 두려움 속에서 살아간다… 먹이를 찾고… 위험을 피하며…
하루하루를… 겨우 버텨낸다…
그들의 삶은…
먹고… 자고… 번식하는 것에 머문다… 그들은… 자유로 가는 길을 알수 없다… 그곳에서는… 깨달음에 이를 기회도 없다…
이러한 삶은… 나쁜 짓 악업의 결과다….
어떤 존재는… 깊은 고통을 지나… 그곳에 이르고… 어떤 존재는… 업의 힘에 이끌려… 축생으로 태어난다…
그러나…그 업이 다하고… 선한 행위의 열매가 맺히기 시작하면… 다시… 인간으로 태어날 수도 있다…
그러나 그것은…참으로… 드문 일이다…
인간으로 태어난다는 것은… 참으로 귀한 것이다.
진리를 배우고… 사성제를 이해하며… 마음을 닦고… 바른 길을 걸을 수 있는… 소중한 기회다…
인간으로 태어났다해도 방심한다면… 다시 낮은세계로 떨어지게 된다. …

하지만…
사상제를 알고 깨어있다면…우리는… 괴로움을 넘어설 수 있다…
한 걸음… 한 걸음…
마침내… 모든 괴로움이 사라진 자리… 완전한 평화… 열반에 이를 수 있다…

At the break of dawn, the world slowly awakens. Soft light spreads across the earth, bringing a new beginning. Long ago, the Buddha asked his monks a question.Which is greater, he said, the dust on the tip of a fingernail or the dust of the entire earth? The monks replied, The Buddha then said, In the same way, those who are reborn as humans or heavenly beings are very few, but those who fall into lower realms are far more. Why is this so? Because they do not understand the four noble truths. They do not clearly see suffering. They do not know its cause. They do not realize its end, and they do not follow the path beyond it. One of these lower realms is the animal world. We can see it even now. Many animals live in fear, searching for food, escaping danger, struggling each day to survive. Their lives revolve around simple needs, eating, sleeping, and reproducing. They do not know the path to freedom. They do not have the chance to reach enlightenment in that state.

Being born in such a realm is the result of unwholesome actions. Some have passed through deep suffering before. Others arrive there through the force of their karma. But when that karma ends and good actions begin to bear fruit, they may return once more as human beings. And this is something very rare. To be born human is a precious opportunity. It is a chance to learn the truth, to understand the four noble truths, to train the mind, and to walk the right path. If we are careless, we may fall again. But if we are mindful and wise, we can move beyond suffering. Step by step, we can reach the highest goal, complete peace, nirvana.
