Iowa Northern's North Crew works on digging out more snow before adding 5 engines to the 5 engines stuck in a decent snow drift south of Nora Springs. This part of railroading in the winter isnt much fun. They would spend around a hour and a half trying to rock these 5 units that are stuck and couldnt ever get anything busted loose. 10 mph railroading doesnt due well in snow drift like this one.

The North Crew is now waiting on a backhoe and a cat to get this power unstuck near Nora Springs. The power can really get wedged in when you move thru drifts as seen by this photo. Doesnt take much to get stuck if dont keep the speed up. I have only had to climb out the front door of the unit once and climb up to get ontop of a snow drift. So really this drift isnt that deep yet, its only January too.

It is hard to imagine that you can actually have 27,000 worth of horsepower and still be stuck. Here is the proof, 10 units and the rear 5 units can only be moved only a few inches back and forth. They actually put all 10 units online to try to move and no luck. The north crew is about 4 miles south of Nora Springs and not going anywhere soon. Winter's 1st casualty.

The area around MP 144 is know for drifting in quite a bit. The Ditcher crew is pushing back this drift for the 2nd time this year. You cant hard tell on the north side of the track that it was pushed back once already. Northwest winds normally behind snow storm play havoc with cuts on the Cornlines.

The conductor off the Russell Plow starts to dig out the west siding switch at Ossian. The Davis Jct to Mason City manifest train is stopped on the main track in the background waiting to meet the work train. The switch heaters on these powered switches weren't working right, so it was up to good old fashion manual labor to get the job done.

L563 is on the roll out of Waterloo as they hit their 1st major drift east of Raymond. This job ran out of Waterloo with 2 GP 38's and 7 cars. Their mission today is get all the work done on the Dubuque Sub between Jesup and Farley, and then plow the Cedar Rapids branch to get the work done in Cedar Rapids.

Working upgrade with 26 loads and 1 empty, this Mason City, IA to Bensenville, IL manifest train is plow decent snow around MP 52. Being the only train out here in the past 24 hours, the line has drifted in. Tomorrow they would run the Russell Plow out of Mason City to help out on these drifts.

This is what happens when you don't watch the switch indicators. Engineer assumed that the siding switch was properly lined, but not only was it not, it was not lined against him completely, so he picked it at 15 mph. All from HB&T Roadmaster on scene. I had a photography release from HB&T back then, and arrived on scene minutes after it happened, having just shot this guy crossing the SP at Tower 26 just minutes before.

A short grain train rolls into Peosta as a G843 sits in the siding and waits. Strong winds behind a recent snow storm is filling in all the drifts in between Waterloo and Peosta. This is a grain train running from Waterloo, IA to Chicago, IL with 31 grain out of Waterloo and 50 grain they will pickup at Freeport, IL.

Waiting outside of Jesup for M338, this G843 takes a break from plowing snow on the Dubuque Sub. This is the 3rd train thru the drifts today, but they are drifting right back in at a quick rate. The power really packs in with snow when you hit drifts 3-6 foot deep and over 1/4 mile in length. Most of the bigger drifts were in the Winthrope-Jesup area.

When you got to either be dug out or dig yourself out of the front door, you know that you've been hitting some good drifts. The wind was blowing quite hard today filling in drifts between Austin, MN and Mason City, IA. These guys were about 20 minutes behind a local all the way from Austin and still hit that much snow!!

Although it doesnt look like it, this G843 has been plowing major snow drifts between Manchester and Independence. This is the 2nd time the crew has had to stop and clean off the windows west of Beth. This is the 3rd train thru these drifts in the past 10 hours, but strong winds are blowing things right back in.

Trying to keep the horn working and the wipers going is a tough chore West of Marcus today. The drifts between Owens and Marcus are pretty hefty when the snow and wind meet out here in Western Iowa.

Power for a Knierim grain load sits at Ft Dodge waiting to be cleaned out and fueled. The 28 mile roundtrip down the Omaha Sub between Tara and Knierim covered these units in snow today.

This local has stopped to take on fuel at Barnum. This crew has been fighting snow drifts for over 100 miles today on the Cherokee Sub. This shot was taken after the crew had cleaned off the lead unit for the 4th time.

Winter weather is causing many headaches west of Waterloo for the CN. Eastbound extra local from Sioux City to Ft Dodge hits drifts at sunset. This is BNSF power is off an Alden grain empty.

눈이 정말 장난아니게 쌓였네요. 우리나라와는 비교 조차 안될정도로...
예전에 대전에서 40센치 폭설이 내릴 때 운행중단이 되었었는데.. 여기는 그냥 막무가네 네요..
아마 록키산맥지역등은 오지이다보니....넓은땅에 역무원들이 주재하기도 힘들고.....그래서 역무원도 없는상태서 운행하려니 그런듯하기도 하고....CN이 은근 사고 많이치기도 하지만...-_-;;;;
