  이게 대통령이다  

1.The Korean War in Vietnam
The relationship with the United States, which had been estranged for a while, has changed again, and the United States will receive a lot of support from the United States in exchange for fighting for the soldiers' lives.
One of the support was the M-16 automatic rifle
 한국의 월남 전 참전으로 인해 잠시 소원해졌던 미국과의 관계가 다시 우호적으로 바뀌었으며.. 군인들이 목숨걸고 싸워 주는 댓가로 많은 지원을 미국으로부터 받게 된다. 
그 지원 중의 하나가 "M-16 자동소총" 이었다. 
2. The weapons used by Korea were a single-engine carbin and M1 rifle used in World War II, which were not comparable to the M-16 automatic rifle.
At that time, the Korean army was keeping a sharp inter-Korean confrontation with such weapons
  한국이 사용하는 무기는 2차대전 때 쓰던 단발식 카빈과 M1 소총으로서 M-16 자동 소총과는 비교할 바가 못 되는 그야말로 구닥다리 무기였다. 
당시 한국군은 그런 무기로 첨예한 남북 대치 상황을 지키고 있었다. 
3.As a condition for South Korea to dispatch military troops to Vietnam, all weapons used by the dispatchers in the United States were brought in when they were withdrawn, and the M16 automatic rifle was to be transferred to the country so that they could be manufactured in Korea.
At the time, the US manufacturer of the M-16 automatic rifle was McDonald's Douglas.
  한국이 월남전에 군 병력을 파병하는 조건으로 미국에 파병군이 사용하던 무기는 철수시 모두 갖고 들어 오며 더불어 M16 자동 소총을 국내에서 제조할 수 있게 기술 이전을 해 달라는 것이었다. 당시 M-16 자동소총의 미국 제조회사는 맥도날드 더글라스 사였다. 
4.The urgent US government accepted all of them and the company, McDonald's Douglas, who won the export to Korea, sent an executive to the country that imported their weapons in appreciation.
 다급한 미국 정부는 이를 모두 수용했고 더불어 한국으로 수출 건을 따낸 '맥도날드 더글라스' 사는 감사의 뜻으로 자신들의 무기를 수입해 준 나라에 중역을 파견해 인사치레를 했다. 
5. "It was summer, I remember it as a summer that was so hot."
I was led by the presidential secretary (McDonald Douglas' executive), and went to Park Chung-hee's office.
And the sight of the office in the door opened by the secretary made his eyes doubtful.
The president saw a man in a pile of papers on a large desk, writing something with one hand and fanning with the other, looking several times bigger than himself
He was President Park Chung-hee.
It was a poor situation that I could not believe that the president of a country was.
No matter how poor the country is, it was hard to think of him as the president.
But when I looked up at his eyes looking at me, I could feel the contradictions of the present time disappearing in me.

He was wearing a suit jacket hung from a hanger to be polite, knowing that a guest had come.
It was only then that I realized he was looking at his office in a running outfit.

As soon as the secretary introduced me, I got up and was polite to the president.
"Thank you for coming from a far place, sit down." 
그가 "박정희 대통령"이었다. 
한나라의 대통령의 모습이라고는 믿기지 않을 초라한 상황이었다. 
아무리 가난한 국가라지만 그의 선치(先痔)는 도저히 대통령이라고 생각하기 힘들 정도였다. 
하지만 고개를 들어 나를 바라보는 그의 눈빛을 보았을 때, 지금 까지의 모순이 내 안에서 사라짐을 느낄 수 있었다. 

 여름이었었다. 그것도 너무도 더웠던 여름으로 기억을 한다."
나는(맥도날드 더글라스 사의 중역) 대통령 비서관의 안내를 받아 박정희 대통령 집무실로 가게 되었다.
그리고 비서관이 열어주는 문 안의 집무실의 광경은 두 눈을 의심케 만들었다. 
대통령은 커다란 책상 위에 어지러이 놓여진 서류더미 속에 자신보다 몇 배 커 보이는 책상에서 한 손으로는 무언가를 적고 다른 한 손으로는 부채질을 하면서 있는 사람을 보게 되었다. 
그는 손님이 온 것을 알고 예의를 차리기 위해 옷걸이에 걸린 양복 저고리를 입고 있었다. 
나는 그때서야 비로소 그가 러닝 차림으로 집무를 보고 있었음을 알게 되었다. 
"각하!!! 미국 맥도널드 사에서 오신 데이빗 심슨 씨입니다." 
비서가 나를 소개함과 동시에 나는 일어나 대통령에게 예의를 갖추었다. 
"먼 곳에서 오시느라 수고 많으셨소, 앉으시오."
6. Whether it was due to the heat of midsummer or the tension I felt for the first time in my life. I knew that my hand was unconsciously tied with a tightly tied tie.
"Ah!!!!I think I've been rude.In this spacious room alone, I think it's a waste to blow air conditioners in a country where there's no drop of oil.I don't want this debt. It is not fresh compared to the people who burn the flesh in this hot sun. "
"Look, secretary!!!! Why don't you turn on the air conditioner with a guest here?"
 한여름의 더위 때문인지, 태어나서 처음 느껴보는 긴장 탓인지..나는 무의식적으로 굳게 매어진 넥타이로 손이 가고 있음을 알았다. 
"아!!! 내가 결례를 한 것 같소이다.나 혼자 있는 이 넓은 방에서 그것도 기름 한 방울 나지 않는 나라에서 에어컨을 튼다는 것은 큰 낭비인 것 같아서요..나는 이 부채 하나면 바랄게 없지만 말이오. 이 뜨거운 볕 아래서 살을 태우며 일하는 국민들에 비하면 신선놀음 아니겠소.." 
"이보게, 비서관!!! 손님이 오셨는데 에어컨을 켜는 게 어떻겠나?" 
 I only then found that there was no common air-conditioning wind blowing in the office of the so-called president of a country.
And I could see that something was different from the president of many backward countries I have met so far.
I could feel the smallness of his words that I couldn’t answer.
"Oh, yes, sir..." The secretary worked the air conditioner and I was able to talk to the president about work."
Maybe that's why.
 나는 그제야 소위 한 나라의 대통령 집무실에 그 흔한 에어컨 바람 하나 불지 않는다는 것을 알았다.
그리고 지금까지 내가 만나봤던 여러 후진국의 대통령과는 무언가 다른 사람임을 알 수 있었다. 
그래서일까.. 
나는 그의 말에 제대로 대꾸할 수 없을 만큼 작아짐을 느낄 수 있었다. 
"아, 네.. 각하.." 
비서관이 에어컨을 작동하고 비로소 나는 대통령과 업무에 관해 이야기를 할 수 있었다. 
7. I told him the purpose of my visit to Korea as scheduled.
"Ma'am!
I am grateful that Korea has decided to import our M-16 rifles this time, and I hope this will greatly help Korea's national defense. "
And this is a small holiness of our company.I put an envelope of checks in front of him
"What is this?"
He (President Park Chung-hee) picked up the envelope and began to look at the contents.
"Well, a million dollars. That's a lot I can't touch on my salary.
A smile lingered on his face, which was cold.
I could not hide my disappointment, knowing that he was a normal person who liked money, no matter what other people were.
I found the disappointment very different from the feeling of awe (the feeling) I first felt about him.
"Ma'am! This money is a small respect that you see in our company, so please accept it."
The president laughed, closed his eyes, opened them.
  예정대로 내가 한국을 방문한 목적을 그에게 이야기를 했다. 
"각하! 이번에 한국이 저희 M-16소총의 수입을 결정해 주신 것에 대해서 감사드립니다. 이것이 한국의 국가방위에 크게 도움이 되었으면 하는 바램입니다." 
그리고 이것은 저희 회사의 작은 성의라고 하면서..나는 준비해온 수표가 든 봉투를 그의 앞에 내밀었다
"이게 무엇이오?" 
그(박정희대통령)는 봉투를 들어 그 내용을 살피기 시작했다. 
"흠.. 100만 달러라~ 내 봉급으로는 만져보기 힘든 금액이구려.." 
차갑게만 느껴지던 그의 얼굴에 웃음기가 머물렀다. 
나는 그도 역시 다른 사람들과 다를 것 없이 돈을 좋아하는 보통 사람임을 알고 실망감을 감출 수가 없었다. 
그 실망이 처음 그에 대해 느꼈던 경외(敬畏)의 느낌과는 많이 다름을 알게 되었다. 
"각하!!! 이 돈은 저희 회사에서 각하에게 보이는 작은 성의입니다. 그러니 부디 받아 주십시요." 
대통령은 웃음을 지으며 지그시 눈을 감았다 뜨며.. 나에게 말했다. 
8."Hey! Let me ask you something."
"Yes, sir!"
"Do you really give me this money?"
Yes, sir, that's right.
“Then there’s one condition instead of receiving.”
"Yes, sir, say it... sir!"
 "이보시오!!! 하나만 물읍시다." 
"예, 각하!" 
"이 돈 정말 날 주는 것이오?" 
"예. 각하, 맞습니다." 
"그럼 받는 대신 조건이 하나 있소." 
"네, 말씀하십시오.. 각하!" 
9.He held the envelope with the check back out to me, and looked back at the envelope and said to me, wondering.
"Now this one million is my money, and I want to make a deal with your company with my money because it's my money.
Please send more M16 rifles to Korea than this money. I want guns rather than money, can you do that?
I believe that you will do enough. "
I was wide-eyed by my wonders.
"This million dollars you gave me is neither my money nor yours... This money is now swapped for the sweat and blood of my sons, my brothers and my children, who are fighting in the south of the country. How can you use such money to fill my ship as president of a country?"
Take this money back.Instead, send us this gun as much as this money.
 그는 수표가 든 봉투를 나에게 다시 내밀었다. 그리고 다시 되 돌아온 봉투를 보며 의아해 하고 있는 나를 향해 말했다. 
"자~ 이 돈 100만 달러는 내 돈이오. 내 돈이니까 내 돈을 가지고 당신 회사와 거래를 하고 싶소. 
이 돈만큼 M16 소총을 한국으로 더 보내 주시오. 난 돈 보다는 총으로 받았으면 하는데 그렇게 할 수 있소?
당신이라면 충분히 해 주리라 믿고 제안하는 것이오." 
나는 의아함에 눈이 크게 떠졌다. 
"당신이 나에게 준 이 100만 달러는 내 돈도 그렇다고 당신 돈도 아니오.. 이 돈은 지금 내 형제, 내 자식들이 천리 타향 월남에서 피를 흘리며 싸우고 있는 내 아들들의 땀과 피와 바꾼 것이오. 그런 돈을 어찌 한 나라의 대통령으로서 내 배를 채우는데 사용할 수 있겠소?" 
"이 돈은 다시 가져가시오.대신 이 돈만큼의 총을 우리에게 보내 주시오." 
10, I was surprised by his suggestion, so I jumped up and said, “I’m sorry.
"Yes, sir. Sir! I'll make sure you send me another one million dollars worth of rifles."
.I saw his smile, quite different from what I had just seen. A father’s smile, not the president of a country.
So he felt that the people of Korea were his brothers.
나는 그의 제안에 놀랐다. 그래서 벌떡 일어나 말했다. 
"네, 알겠습니다. 각하! 반드시 100만 달러 어치의 소총을 더 보내드리도록 하겠습니다." 

 그때 나는 방금 전과는 사뭇 다른 그의 웃음을 보았다. 한 나라의 대통령이 아닌 한 아버지의 웃음을..
그렇게 그에게는 한국의 국민들이 자신의 형제들이요. 자식들임을 느꼈다. 
11. I looked around the office once more with the guidance of the secretary who was walking out and saw the leader of a small but so big country who took off his suit jacket and quietly turned off his hand-held air conditioner. Korea is the president of a small and unfamiliar country, but I felt some respect for him.
. 배웅하는 비서관의 안내를 받아 집무실을 다시 한 번 둘러본 나의 눈에는 양복저고리를 벗으며 조용히 손수 에어컨을 끄는 작지만 너무나 크게 보이는 참다운 한 나라의 지도자를 보았다. 한국이란 작고 낯선 나라의 대통령이지만 그에게 왠지 모를 존경심을 느껴졌다.

아리랑>은 무슨 뜻일까요? 

  아리랑은 작가 미상의 우리나라 민요로써 남녀노소 누구나 잘 알고  부르는 노래입니다. 

우리는 아리랑을 흔히 사랑에 버림받은  어느 한 맺힌

여인의 슬픔을 표현한 노래로  대충 그리알고 생각하는데  아리랑이라는  <민요 속에는> 큰 뜻이 담겨 있습니다. 

원래 참뜻은, <참 나를 깨달아 >인간 완성에 이르는 기쁨을 노래한 <깨달음의 노래> 입니다. 

 <"아"(我)는> 참된 나(眞我)를 의미합니다.

 <"리"(理)는> 알다, 다스리다, 통한다는 뜻입니다.

<"랑"(朗)은> 즐겁다, 다스리다 란 뜻입니다.   그래서 

아리랑(我理朗)은 <참된 나(眞我)를 찾는 즐거움>이라는 의미입니다. 

 "아리랑 고개를 넘어간다"는 것은 나를 찾기 위해 깨달음의 언덕을 넘어간다는 의미이고, 

 "고개를 넘어간다"는 것은 <피안의 언덕>을 넘어간다는 뜻이기도 합니다.  "나를 버리고가시는 님은 십리도못 가서발병 난다."의 뜻은

진리를 외면하는 자는 얼마 못가서 고통을 받는다는 뜻으로, 진리를 외면하고 오욕락(五慾樂)을 쫓아 생활하는 자는 그 과보(果報)로 얼마 못 가서 고통에 빠진다는 뜻입니다. 

우리의 아리랑에 대한 사연들과 그 뜻입니다. 어찌 한국인이라면 '아리랑'을 잊을 수 있을까?
