[묵상 칼럼] 굳은 마음을 깨뜨리는 역설의 승리

   인간의 눈에 실패처럼 보이는 순간이 있습니다. 아무리 애써도 상황이 나아지지 않거나, 내 힘으로는 어찌할 수 없는 절망의 벽에 부딪힐 때 우리는 스스로를 실패자로 여깁니다. 그러나 바로 그 자리가 하나님의 가장 놀라운 승리가 시작되는 지점입니다.

   예수님께서는 제자들에게 자신이 예루살렘으로 올라가 고난을 받고 죽임을 당할 것(눅 18:31)을 미리 말씀하셨습니다. 세상의 기준에서 볼 때 십자가는 명백한 실패이자 완벽한 패배였습니다. 제자들 역시 이 말씀의 뜻을 전혀 깨닫지 못했습니다(눅 18:34). 그들의 마음이 인간적인 기대와 육신적 생각으로 굳어 있었기 때문입니다.

   오스왈드 챔버스는 “인간의 관점에서 실패로 보이는 것이 하나님의 관점에서는 가장 놀라운 승리입니다”라고 말합니다. 우리는 종종 나의 뜻대로 일이 풀어지는 것을 ‘승리’라고 착각하지만, 하나님은 우리의 완고한 자아와 굳은 마음이 깨어지고 무너지는 자리를 통해 일하십니다. 십자가라는 극심한 실패의 자리에서 인류 구원이라는 가장 찬란한 부활의 승리가 완성되었듯 말입니다.

선지자 에스겔을 통해 주신 약속을 기억하십시오.

“또 새 영을 너희 속에 두고 새 마음을 너희에게 주되 너희 육신에서 굳은 마음을 제거하고 부드러운 마음을 줄 것이며” (에스겔 36:26)

   하나님은 우리의 굳은 마음—자신의 지혜와 힘을 의지하려는 완고함, 상처와 절망으로 딱딱하게 굳어진 마음—을 제거하기 위해 때로는 우리가 ‘실패’라고 부르는 순간을 허락하십니다. 나의 완벽한 무능을 고백할 때 비로소 굳은 마음이 부서지고, 그 자리에 성령께서 주시는 부드럽고 유연한 새 마음이 깃들게 됩니다.

   오늘 당신의 삶 가운데 실패처럼 보이는 일이 있습니까? 내 뜻대로 되지 않아 낙심하고 계십니까? 실망하지 마십시오. 하나님은 지금 당신의 굳은 마음을 제거하시고, 하나님의 승리가 일할 수 있는 부드러운 토양을 만드시는 중입니다. 십자가 너머의 부활을 바라보며, 오늘도 나의 실패 위에서 임하시는 하나님의 완벽한 승리를 신뢰합시다.

[Devotional Column] The Paradoxical Victory that Softens the Hard Heart

   There are moments in life that look like utter failure through human eyes. When situations do not improve despite our best efforts, or when we hit an insurmountable wall of despair, we label ourselves as failures. Yet, that very place of perceived defeat is often where God’s most astonishing victory begins.

  Jesus foretold His disciples that He would go up to Jerusalem to be mistreated and executed (Luke 18:31). By world standards, the Cross was a clear failure and a total defeat. Even the disciples could not understand what He meant (Luke 18:34), as their hearts were hardened by human expectations and worldly reasoning.

   As Oswald Chambers insightfully noted, “What looks like failure to human eyes is, in God’s perspective, the most incredible victory.” We often mistake smooth outcomes that align with our will for 'victory.' However, God works through the shattering of our stubborn self-will and hardened hearts. Just as the ultimate victory of resurrection was accomplished through the tragic failure of the Cross, God weaves His glory out of our brokenness.

Remember the promise given through the prophet Ezekiel:

“I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.” (Ezekiel 36:26)

   To strip away our "heart of stone"—our self-reliance, stubborn pride, and cynicism built from past pain—God sometimes allows moments we classify as "failure." Only when we confess our absolute helplessness is the stony heart shattered, making room for a soft, responsive new heart imparted by the Holy Spirit.

   Are you facing something today that feels like a defeat? Are you discouraged because things haven't gone according to your plan? Do not lose heart. God is actively removing your heart of stone and cultivating soft soil where His divine victory can take root. Look beyond the Cross to the resurrection, and trust in His ultimate triumph unfolding right over your apparent failures.
