혼자 사는 70세 이상 고령층 인구가 지난해 159만명으로 전 연령대 중 가장 많은 것으로 나타났다. 급속한 고령화로 자취하는 청년보다 홀로 사는 노인이 더 많은 흐름이 2년째 이어지고 있다.

9일 국가데이터처에 따르면, 지난해 1인 가구 중 70세 이상의 비율은 19.8%로 전 연령대 중 가장 높았다. 혼자 사는 29세 이하는 143만명(17.8%)으로 70세 이상보다 16만명 적은 2위였다. 1인 가구 중 29세 이하의 비율은 줄곧 가장 높았는데, 2023년 처음 70세 이상에 추월당한 뒤 2년 연속 2위를 기록했다. 지난해 70세 이상과 29세 이하의 1인 가구 비율 격차는 2%포인트로, 전년(0.5%포인트)의 4배로 벌어졌다.

지난해 전체 1인 가구는 804만5000가구로 전년보다 21만6000가구 늘어 전체 가구(2229만4000가구)의 36.1%를 차지했다. 1인 가구 비율은 매년 최고치를 경신하고 있다.

홀로 사는 노인이 늘면서 복지 수요도 커지고 있다. 지난해 국민기초생활보장 수급 1인 가구는 139만7000가구로 전년보다 8만3000가구(6.3%) 늘었다. 전체 수급 가구(188만4000가구)의 74.2%에 달한다. 이 비율은 2015년 60.8%에서 매년 상승세다. 지난해 1인 가구의 연간 소득은 3423만원으로 전체 가구 평균(7427만원)의 46.1%에 그쳤다. 1인 가구의 절반 이상(53.6%)은 연소득 3000만원 미만이었다.

김정식 연세대 명예교수는 “노후 준비가 안 된 고령층 중 1인 가구 비율이 늘수록 생활 및 돌봄, 의료 지원 등의 복지 지출도 급증할 수밖에 없다”며 “재정 적자 확대로 국가의 부담은 갈수록 커질 것”이라고 말했다.
