The little girl is asleep on the seat. Monsieur Bark lights another cigarette.
His eyes are shining brightly. Monsieur Linh starts to hum the song. For a while, they both remain like this, with the photographs next to the empty cups, laid out in front of them.
When they leave the café, Monsieur Bark takes Monsieur Linh by the shoulder and, as he does every day now, he accompanies him to the door of the building where the dormitory is situated. And once they are there, the two men spend a long time taking leave of one another as they say “Good-day”.
In the dormitory, life has not changed. The two families are still there. The men spend their days and part of their nights playing cards or mah-jong, endlessly talking, laughing, insulting one another, and making up by drinking glasses of rice beer until they are often drunk.
The elder children are going to school now. They return with more and more words of the language of their country of exile. They teach these to the younger ones. The three women attend to the food and the washing. Monsieur Linh always finds his meal beside his mattress. He thanks them with a bow. Nobody takes any notice of him any more, nor does anyone speak to him. But he does not care. He is not alone. There is Sang diû. And there is the fat man, his friend.

One day, Monsieur Bark takes Monsieur Linh to the coast. It is the first time since his arrival, a few months ago, that he has seen the sea again. The fat man has taken him to the harbour, not to the place where he disembarked, that vast dock cluttered with cranes, unloaded cargo, waiting trucks and gaping warehouses, but somewhere quieter, in the shape of a bay, where the water and the fishing boats look as if they form part of a brightly coloured painting.

The two friends walk a short way along the quayside and sit down on a bench. They face the sea. Winter is over. The sun is warmer. Up above in the sky, a flock of birds swirl and sometimes dive into the harbour waters to emerge again with silvery slivers of fish in their beaks. Fishermen are repairing nets on their moored boats. Some are whistling. Others are talking in loud voices, calling out to one another and laughing. It is a very pleasant spot. Monsieur Linh inhales the air. He inhales deeply, with his eyes closed. Yes, he was not mistaken. There are fragrances here, real fragrances: of salt, of air, of dried fish, tar, seaweed and water. How good they are! It is the first time that this land has really smelled of anything, that it has had a tang. The old man is intoxicated by it. He thanks his friend from the bottom of his heart for having introduced him to this place.
Monsieur Linh takes off some of his little girl’s clothes. He places her between himself and the fat man. Sitting up. The child opens her eyes. Her eyes meet the sea, the wide, open sea. The old man gazes out over it too. He can see himself on the ship once more, and images suddenly come back to him – terrible, loathsome and wonderful – and jostle about inside him. It is as if he were being pummelled with blows, striking at his heart, his soul, his belly and all his limbs. Yes, beyond the sea, far beyond it, days and days away, there is all that. There had been all that.
Then Monsieur Linh raises his hand, points his finger at the sea, the open sea, the blue and white horizon, and in a loud voice he utters the name of his homeland.
Monsieur Bark, who is also looking in the same direction, can then feel sudden bursts of fire pulsating and rushing through his veins, and images – terrible, loathsome and inhuman – come back to him too. In a loud voice, he also utters the name of the country that lies beyond the sea, Monsieur Linh’s homeland. He says the name several times, in an increasingly muted tone, as his shoulders slump, as his whole body slumps, as he forgets everything, as he forgets even to light another cigarette, even though he has just dropped the stub of the previous one on the ground, without crushing it with his heel as he normally does.
Monsieur Bark is nothing but a fat, stooped man, who feebly repeats the name of Monsieur Linh’s country, as if it were a litany, while his eyes fill with tears that he does not even attempt to hide or wipe away with his hands, and these tears pour down his cheeks, making his chin and neck wet, and drip down into the collar of his shirt where his skin absorbs them.
The old man notices. He puts his hand on his friend’s shoulder and strokes it gently. Then Monsieur Bark stops looking out to sea, and through his tearfilled gaze looks at him instead.
