Reinstation and Commission
Jesus and the Miraculous Catch of Fish
Afterward Jesus appeared again to his disciples, by the Sea of Galilee. It happened this way: (After the resurrection of Jesus. They missed Jesus for a while. But He showed up like following.)
Simon Peter, Thomas (also known as Didymus), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee (James and John), and two other disciples (maybe Andrew and Philip) were together. (Seven of them were at the Sea of Galilee together.)
“I’m going out to fish,” Simon Peter told them, and they said, “We’ll go with you.” So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. (They went to fishing- their original job- without Jesus but couldn't catch any fish over night.)
Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus. (Jesus came to them in the early morning but they didn't realize Him.)
He called out to them, “Friends, haven’t you any fish?” “No,” they answered. (Catch any fish? Jesus asked and they answered no. Their effort went vain.)
He said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish. (Jesus ordered them to cast the net on the right side of the boat and they caught a lot. There was a lot of fish there while the disciples failing all night. They saw nothing but Jesus saw something.)
Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” (John said it.) As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, “It is the Lord,” (Peter confirmed.) he wrapped his outer garment around him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water. (Recognizing Jesus, Peter jumped into the water and came to Jesus.)
The other disciples followed in the boat, towing the net full of fish, for they were not far from shore, about a hundred yards. (Others sailed back to the beach with fish.)
When they landed, they saw a fire of burning coals there with fish on it, and some bread. (They saw meals were prepared for them. Jesus did it.)
Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish you have just caught.” (Jesus asked them more fish.)
So Simon Peter climbed back into the boat and dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish, 153, but even with so many the net was not torn. (Peter brought fish from the boat, 153 of them.)
Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” (Jesus offered them breakfast meals.) None of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. (Every one of them knew He is the Lord Jesus without any further question.)
Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. (Jesus distributed the bread and fish to the disciples. It reminds the feeding the five thousand and more people with the five loaves of bread and two fish.)
This was now the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples after he was raised from the dead. (It was the third encounter of them.)
Jesus Reinstates Peter
When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?” “Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.” (Jesus confirmed Peter's love for Jesus.) Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.” (And ordered to feed the lambs of Jesus.)
Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.” (The second time Jesus confirmed Peter's love for Jesus, and said "Take care of my sheep.")
The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” (Jesus asked Peter the third time if he loves Jesus.) He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.” (Peter confessed his love for Jesus in agony.) Jesus said, “Feed my sheep. ("Feed my sheep." The three times confirmations reminds us the Peter's three times of denial for Jesus. Jesus and we know that Peter truly loves Jesus. Jesus, however, asked three times if he loves Jesus not from any doubt of him but to assure Peter's confidence as of reinstated, and his future mission because of his love for Jesus. Loving the Lord is the most, maybe the ONLY, required characteristic of the servants. But anything else, such as personal fame and gain, should be avoided.)
Very truly I tell you, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.”
Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. (From now on, the life or death, faith, and services of Peter belong to the Lord. Peter will be the Best Peter when he follows and serves Jesus with loving heart.) Then he said to him, “Follow me!” (Jesus led them from the beach.)
Peter turned and saw that the disciple whom Jesus loved was following them. (This was the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper and had said, “Lord, who is going to betray you?” (the guy; John, 13:24-25)
When Peter saw him, he asked, “Lord, what about him?” (Peter wondered the future of his friend John.)
Jesus answered, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me.” (Jesus saying, Others should not be our concern. We live and serve with and for what have been given to us. It is the Lord who governs whom and how. Also the reward, if we call it, should not be our concern. We just know that God is good and fair. We all are Kingdom workers. 4:37-38, Lk. 17:10)
Because of this, the rumor spread among the believers that this disciple would not die. (The other disciples misunderstood what Jesus meant if John never die.) But Jesus did not say that he would not die; he only said, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you?” (But Jesus meant, "I am the Lord. You will have your ways of life and services." We serve One God with many different gifts, ministries, and officers. 1Co. 12:4-11) (John the Apostle happened to live long and died naturally even he had been persecuted, jailed and suffered a lot.)
This is the disciple who testifies to these things and who wrote them down. We know that his testimony is true. (John now identifies himself who was loved by Jesus and wrote this report on Jesus.)
Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written. (The biblical records are not everything of Jesus since Jesus did uncountable ministries of proclaiming the Gospel, Teaching the Word, and Healed the Sicks. We must work hard to see the true picture of Jesus and His ministry in the limited, but good and enough resources of the Bible depending the enlightening ministry of the Holy Spirit. 14:26, 16:13. "Learn the Basic. Forget the Basic for More.")
