I Ching(Book of Changes) First Volume.
Hexagram 2 . Kun(The Recep䷁ ......6
▣ Six in the fifth place : Yellow lower garment brings supreme good fortune.
[Explanation]
"For [Six in the fifth place], wearing a yellow lower skirt(symbolizing the queen)
brings supreme good fortune."
[Commentary]
Garmment & Character : Wearing a yellow skirt [黃裳,황상] covers the lower body,
while matching well with the upper garment and color palette[乾衣坤裳,건의곤상].
This reflects the noble virtue of womanhood [
bringing ssupreme good fortune [元吉,원길], symbolzing the mother of all ages, the Empress.
Symbolism of Yellow : yellow is a noble color―the color among colors and the seat
of the Queen.
Historical Commentary(Dong-pa's quote) :
"If one wears yellow for both the top and bottom garments, one brcomes a king;
if one wears only a yellow lower skirt, one is a wise subject.
True beauty arises when different qualities complement each other."
Yin& Yang Dynamics : If only one side strictly dominated within the energy flow of Yin and Yang.
How could there be beautiful decoration?
The 5th line is Yin in nature, yet it holds the virtue of Yang.
Thus, inner refinement and beauty shine forth from within by maintaining moderation
Virtue of Subjects : Here, the 'Yellow Skirt'[
represents a loyal subject [賢臣,현신 guided by virtue [德,덕].
Historical Examples : Representative figures possessing this beautiful virtue of the
'Yellow Skirt' include the Duke of Zhou and Zhuge Liang,
who held absolute power yet never overstepped their boundarise.
Symbol of Noble Statys : Because : "Yellow Skirt [黃裳,황상]" signifies noble status,
according to the I Ching(Book of Changes), the Empress posswssed six official garments,
the foremost being a chrysanthemum-yellow robe [鞠衣,국의 /Guk-ui].
The Divination Story(Spring and Autumn Annals) : When Nam-Gwa [
a retainer of the Gye family in the Lu state, betrayed his master and requested a divination
using the 5th line of the Kun hexagram[坤卦,곤괘 5], Zi-fu Hui-bo[子服惠伯,자복혜백] declared :
"Yellow[黃,황] is the central color, and the skirt [裳,상] adorns the lower body.
Greatness[元,원] is the peak of goodness[善,선],
implying that wearing a yellow skirt denotes a noble status.
However, one who lacks loyalty cannot attain yellow even with the 5th line ;
one who is disrespectful while occupying a lower position becomes vulgar ;
and one whose actions are unjust cannot achieve the ultimate good.
Therefore, unless one possesses these three virtue―Loyalty[忠,충], Respect[恭,공],
Goodness [善,선] ― this hexagram does not apply."
Ultimately, Nam-Gwa's rebellion failed.
Confucius stated that when the beauty of "inner moderation that permeates through
all principles" [黃中通理,황중통리] is embedded in one's chatacter,
any undertaking will succeed.
A noble person understands the universal laws through golden proper place[
Their virtue naturally reaches every limb [
manifesting clearly in their work [發於事業,발어사업].
This represents the height of beauty [
A person who embodies this internal virtue and wisdom achieves pure intentions within
and deep insight into external principles, gaining a stable statys and mind-body peace.
Yellow / Center[黃中,황중] : Symolizes the Kun(Earth) hexagram[坤,곤].
Understanding Principles[通理,통리] : Symbolizes the Kan(Water) hexagram[坎,감].
Proper Position[正位,정위] : Refers to Kan[坎,감]. Abiding[居體,거체] : to Kun[坤,곤].
Yellow[黃,황] is the central color representing the virtye of a ruler,
while the skirt[裳,상] adorns the lower body, representing the duty of a subject.
This is comparable to King Wen, who held two-thirds of the realm yet continued
to serve King Zhou of the Shang Dynasty faithfully.
The Middle Way : In Buddhist Law[佛法,불법], Zen[禪,선] is neither mundane nor supramundane.
Because Zen is the true reality of the Middle Way[中道,중도], it is represented by Yellow[黃,황].
Dignity & Enlightenment : Remaining motionless in meditative absorption[
displaying noble dignity[威儀,위의], and harmonizing wity all Nine Realms[九界,구계],
is like the Skirt [裳,상].
This represents supreme enlightenment [菩提,보리],bringing supreme good fortune [元吉,원길].
Adornment of Wisdom : rhe adornment of concentration and wisdom[
is called Pattern / Culture[文,문].
True cultivation[全修,전수] residing within"[文在中,문재중].
Let us examine the funeral text[祭文,제문] written by Andong Confucian scholars honoring
Toegye[退陶,퇴도 -Yi Hwang], whose prose is deeply moving :
"Ah, our master [嗟我先生,차아선생] early on clearly perceived the Way [見道早明,견도조명].
Hoiding fast to reverence and righteousness [
his exterior was upright and his interior straightforward
He revealed the subtle and illuminated the hidden [
He excavated the source to trace the stream's origin [
He hoped to become like Yan Hui [
and admired Master Zhu Xi to the point of absorption
He achieved merits surpassing ancient sages [
taught and guided younger generations
and refined the scholars' customs
