[신부님과 스님] 동갑 성직자의 함박웃음(The beaming smiles of two clergy of the same age)

송암노스님이 서명원 신부님에게 "이번 생에는 내가 키가 작지요? 하지만 다음 생에는 내 키가 더 클 거요"라고 하자 서명원 신부님에 "어느 나라에서 태어나실 건가요?" 하면서 파안대소하는 모습. 지난 22일 서명원 신부님이 경기도 안성시 죽산면 소재 도피안사 송암노스님을 찾았습니다.

이날 두 분은 2005년 서명원 신부님의 특강 장소였던 '나한전'에서 명상 시간을 가졌습니다. (지난해 11월 17일 발행한 사고로 오른쪽 다리가 아직 불편한 서명원 신부님께 담당 의사 선생님은 '절대로 좌선은 안 된다'는 조언을 주셨기에, 당초의 좌선 계획을 바꾸었습니다)

이번 방문은 프랑스의 한 공중파 채널의 다큐멘터리 프로그램 ‘Le jour du Seigneur’ 촬영의 일환이었어요. (유튜브 채널 구독 부탁드려요)

두 분은 지난 2005년 창건주 광덕 스님의 뜻을 이어받자는 취지로 열린 <우리에게 가족과 가정은 무엇인가 - 새로운 가정의 가치를 찾아서>라는 첫 인연을 맺었습니다. 당시 송암노스님은 현대불교신문과 함께 이 행사를 주최한 도피안사의 주지였고, 서명원 신부님은 성철스님을 주제로 박사학위를 취득한 지 1년 후 서강대 종교학과 교수로 부임한 '새내기 교수'였었습니다.

그 사이 두 분은 퇴직한 교수와 암 투병하는 노선사가 되어 있습니다.

두 분의 명상 촬영이 끝난 후에는 나한전 옆 모란동산에서 산책 촬영이 이어졌습니다.

두런두런 모란동산을 산책하던 두 분은 어느 비석 앞에서 걸음을 멈추고 긴 시간 대화를 나누었습니다. 

그 비석은 송암스님이 당신의 묘비(행적비)를 미리 준비한 것이었습니다.

"스승 따라 왔었네

스승 곁에 살다가

스승 따라 떠났네"

창건주 광덕선사의 25주기 때인 지난해 마련한 것이라고 합니다.

한 자 한 자 짚어가며 설명하는 송암노스님과 귀 기울여 설명을 따라가던 서명원 신부님은 이렇게 말했습니다.

"뭉클하는 마음이 일어납니다."

서명원 신부님의 눈가가 약간 붉어졌습니다.

스승의 길을 따라 묵묵히 수행해온 송암 노스님의 역사를 그 누구보다 잘 아는 서명원 신부님이기 때문일 것입니다.

On the 22nd, Father Seo Myung-weon(Bernard SENÉCAL) visited Venerable Songam at Dopyeansa Temple in Juksan-myeon, Anseong, Gyeonggi Province.

On this day, the two spent time in meditation at the Nahanjeon Hall, where Father Seo had given a special lecture back in 2005. (Due to an accident last November that left his right leg still impaired, Father Seo had been advised by his doctor to avoid sitting meditation, and thus they adjusted their original plan.)

This visit was part of the filming of the documentary program“Le Jour du Seigneur” by a French public broadcasting channel. (Please subscribe to this YouTube channel.)

The two first formed their connection in 2005 at an event titled“What Are Family and Home to Us – In Search of New Values of Family,”held in the spirit of carrying on the vision of the temple’s founder, Venerable Gwangdeok. At the time, Venerable Songam was the abbot of Dopyeansa Temple and co-hosted the event with Modern Buddhism Newspaper, while Father Seo had just joined Sogang University as a newly appointed professor of religious studies, one year after earning his doctorate on the topic of Venerable Seongcheol.

Since then, the two have each walked long paths—one becoming a retired professor, the other an elderly monk battling cancer.

After the meditation filming, the shoot continued with a walk in the Moran Garden beside the Nahanjeon Hall.

As they strolled together, sharing quiet conversation, they stopped in front of a stone monument and remained there for quite some time in deep dialogue.

The monument had been prepared in advance by Venerable Songam as his own memorial stele.

“I came following my teacher,
I lived beside my teacher,
And I shall depart following my teacher.”

It was erected last year on the 25th anniversary of the passing of the founding master, Venerable Gwangdeok.

As Venerable Songam carefully explained each line, and Father Seo listened attentively, Father Seo quietly said:

“It stirs something deep within me.”

A slight redness appeared around Father Seo’s eyes.

Perhaps it was because he knows better than anyone the life of quiet devotion that Venerable Songam has led in following the path of his teacher.

제작진은 서명원 신부님의 선스승이신 법경 노사님도 취재했습니다. 서울 무악재에 소재한 선도회 본원을 방문하여 법경 노사님을 인터뷰하고, 신부님과 법경 노사님의 대담도 진행했습니다. 법경 노사님께서 그날의 분위기를 엿볼 수 있는 사진들을 그다음 날 보내주셨습니다. (The production team also covered Beopgyeong Nosa, the senior teacher of Father Seo Myung-weon. They visited the headquarters of the Seondohoe in Muakjae, Seoul, where they conducted an interview with Beopgyeong Nosa and filmed a dialogue between him and Father Seo. The following day, Beopgyeong Nosa sent photos that offered a glimpse of the atmosphere from that day.)

4월 29일 오후 6시에 마치기로 한 촬영은 계획보다 10분 앞서 마쳤습니다.

주체인 서명원 신부님과의 십자가의 길 입구에서 진행한 인터뷰를 마지막으로 제작진은 아주 만족스럽게 새향길을 떠나, 저녁 기차를 타고 서울로 떠났습니다.

그리고 20일 오전 11시 비행기를 타고 프랑스로 돌아갑니다. 

이날 오전 10시 40분경 인천국제공항에서 촬영한 인증샷을 메시지와 함께 공유해드립니다.

(The shoot, originally scheduled to finish at 6:00 PM on April 29, wrapped up about 10 minutes ahead of schedule.

After the final interview with Father Seo Myung-weon at the entrance to the Way of the Cross, the production team, very satisfied, left Saehyang-gil and took an evening train to Seoul.

They will depart for France on a flight at 11:00 AM on the 20th.
