Good evening. I'm Bob Woodruff. Today in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, the US Deputy Secretary of State said he is quite sure that al-Quida carried out that deadly car bombing in a residential compound. At least seventeen people were killed and more than 120 others were wounded, including four Americans. The bombing came amid warnings of possibly imminent attacks against westerners in the region and even in the US. We have several reports tonight beginning with ABC's Richard Gizberg.
Before the bombing, this was an upscale neighborhood. Villas, palm trees and swimming pools. The blast that tore it apart was powerful enough to shake buildings miles away, and among the wounded were 35 children.
This attack bore many of the hallmarks of the bombings in May, also blamed on al-Quida, that killed nine Americans. Suicide bombers shot their way past security with, according to a Saudi government source, the help of snipers posted nearby. Then they drove to the heart of the compound and detonated vehicles loaded with explosives. Only this time they did not target Americans. The people that Saudi TV showed being treated in hospital were mostly Arabic speakers. 'Obviously, there are foreigners in the compound', this woman said, 'but three quarters of them are Arabs. There are no westerners in there.'
The victims were among the six million foreign workers who are vital to Saudi Arabia's oil-driven economy. Many of them are Western-educated, and although they tend to be Muslim, they practice a relaxed bland of Islam that fundamentalists disapprove of.
This attack on foreign workers, analysts say, is an attack on Saudi Arabia's economy, and, therefore, the Saudi royal family. "Their whole purpose of the atrocity is actually to discourage investment in Saudi Arabia, discourage other companies from coming in, and to encourage a lot of the foreign workers to leave because that would paralyze the kingdom."
The bombing occurred one day after the US closed its embassy and two other missions saying that intelligence indicated an attack in Saudi Arabia was imminent. It is now clear the intelligence was right about the timing. What it did not reveal was the target.
Richard Gizberg, ABC News, London.
