   성숙한 신앙인의 삶은 말의 습관과 성품, 그리고 지속적인 기도를 통해 하나님과의 관계가 깊이 드러나는 거룩한 여정입니다. 야고보서 1장 19절에서 제시하는 ‘듣기는 속히 하고, 말하기는 더디 하며, 성내기도 더디 하라’는 권면은 세상의 일반적인 처세술이나 단순한 대화의 기술을 넘어섭니다. 이는 하나님과 타인을 향해 신앙인이 가져야 할 본질적인 마음가짐이자 절제의 영성을 보여주는 중요한 가르침입니다.

  우리가 일상에서 내 주장을 먼저 앞세우기보다 타인과 하나님의 뜻에 귀를 기울이는 '속히 듣는' 자세를 갖기 위해서는 내면의 혈기와 조급함을 내려놓는 과정이 반드시 필요합니다. 자신의 감정과 주장을 즉각적으로 드러내기보다 하나님 앞에서 성냄을 더디 하고 침묵하는 자발적 절제는 인간의 의지만으로는 이루어질 수 없으며, 오직 주님과 만나는 기도 속에서만 비로소 가능해집니다.

  오스왈드 챔버스는 십자가가 우리를 예수 그리스도와 온전히, 그리고 절대적으로 하나 되게 만들며, 그 성령 안에서의 완전한 연합이 다름 아닌 기도를 통해 삶 속에서 실제로 구현된다고 강조했습니다. 요한복음 16장 26절의 말씀처럼, 우리가 감히 담대히 예수 그리스도의 이름으로 하나님 아버지께 나아가 아뢸 수 있게 된 것은 십자가의 은혜로 가로막힌 담이 허물어지고 참된 소통의 길이 열렸기 때문입니다.

   결국 기도는 단순히 우리가 필요한 것을 구하고 요구사항을 아뢰는 수단을 넘어, 예수 그리스도의 성품에 인격적으로 참예하는 거룩한 통로입니다. 기도를 통해 주님과 깊이 연합할 때, 우리는 비로소 내 뜻을 고집하는 조급한 입술을 닫고 하나님의 음성을 먼저 경청하는 거룩한 절제를 배우게 됩니다. 오늘 하루, 주님과의 깊은 기도 안에서 내 욕심과 혈기를 내려놓고, 침묵과 경청으로 그리스도와 하나 됨의 열매를 맺어가기를 소망합니다.

4. 영어묵상칼럼 : Open Prayer and Holy Listening

   The life of a mature believer is a sacred journey wherein our relationship with God is deeply reflected through our speech habits, character, and continuous prayer. The exhortation in James 1:19—"be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry"—transcends simple social wisdom or interpersonal communication techniques. It represents the essential posture and spiritual discipline that a follower of Christ must cultivate toward God and neighbor.

To adopt a posture of "quick listening"— where we listen attentively to God’s will and to others rather than prioritizing our own arguments—we must consciously surrender our internal haste and self-centered impulse. Restraining our emotions and remaining "slow to anger" before the Lord is a form of self-control that human willpower alone cannot sustain; it can only be realized when our lives are deeply anchored in communion with God.

OswaldChambers emphasized that the Cross brings us into complete and absolute oneness with Jesus Christ, and that this spiritual unity is actualized in our daily lives specifically through prayer. As reflected in John 16:26, our ability to approach the Father directly in the name of Jesus is the glorious fruit of the reconciliation established at the Cross, which opened an unbroken pathway of divine fellowship.

   Ultimately, prayer is far more than a mechanism for presenting our personal requests and petitions. It is the vital channel through which we partake in the very character and heart of Christ. As we abide in deep, ongoing prayer with the Lord, we learn the holy discipline of hushing our impatient lips to hear His quiet voice first. May we surrender our self-will today in intimate prayer, bearing the rich fruit of mature oneness with Christ through intentional silence and active, holy listening.
