🦩민물가마우지는 바닷새의 가마우지과에 속하는 조류이다. 속명인 "팔라크로코락스(Phalacrocorax)"는 대머리를 뜻하는 라틴어화된 그리스어 단어인 팔라크로스와 큰까마귀를 뜻하는 코락스가 합쳐져서 만들어졌으며, 종명인 "카르보(carbo)"는 숯이란 뜻이다. 구세계 대부분과 북아메리카 대서양에 서식한다. ‘민물가마우지’(학명 Phalacrocorax carbo)는 육지에 사는 새 가운데 최고의 ‘잠수 사냥꾼’이다. 강이나 습지에서 물속으로 잠수해 재빨리 물고기를 낚아채 올라온다. 이러한 습성 때문에 역사적으로 강과 호수에 삶터를 꾸린 어부들과 갈등을 빚어왔다. 중국과 일본, 페루 등에선 역발상으로 민물가마우지를 이용한 낚시법이 성행하기도 했다. 민물가마우지 목에 줄을 묶어 물고기를 삼키지 못하게 한 뒤, 가마우지를 풀어 물고기를 사냥해 오게 하는 것이다. 최근 국내에서 민물가마우지가 양식장과 내수면 어업에 대한 피해를 일으킨다는 주장이 제기되고 있다. 환경부는 이들의 의견을 받아들여 민물가마우지를 유해야생동물로 지정한다는 방침이다.
