What is the World Culture Mission ?
“Let's Go Wherever, Whenever, Whoever, Whatever, However ! ”
" Beautiful world that people live together.
The congregation for serving one another through the culture mission,
building up mutual trust, support, love, and peace. "
Since the reaching out of the devoted American missionaries to Korean people about a century ago, Korea has become the second largest sending mission body in the world following the USA.
With a global vision embracing the 21stcentury, the Korean-American
Culture Mission was established to continue the bilateral mission legacies by closely teaming up Koreans with the American people. Working together in the area of music, dance, sports, art, technology, and commerce, and surpassing the prejudices much due to the differences in language, ethnicity, and ideology, the World Culture Missions aims to carry out a cultural mission to whoever, whenever, wherever, and however, with the saving gospel of love and peace.

The Great Commission
The Hands of God touched Korea through American Missionaries!
KOREA was influenced by Christianity
American overseas missions for Korea have become one of the most successful fruits of the endeavor for world evangelical missions, being unparalleled in history. Korea is the smallest country in Far East Asia and had not been known to the world, surrounded by the big powers of Japan, China, and Russia. About 120 years ago, however, the seed of Gospel was planted in the Korean peninsula by American missionaries. The results of their endeavor were so fruitful that Korea has become one of the largest nations sending missionaries throughout the world following the United States. While Korea is still divided into North and South, being the only divided country on earth, the communistic North Korea has no gospel or human rights, while South Korea has come to be a free democratic republic where one out of four Koreans is Christian. Korea is a major economic power in Asia through outstanding development that has amazed the whole world. Now the United States should consider the role of Korea significant and enter into partnership with Koreans in order to accomplish the evangelization of the world with full thrust. Although Korea is very unstable in terms of political and international relations among the nations around it, considering the grace of God, Korean people have dispatched about 15,000 missionaries to every corner of the world as of December 2005, and Korean churches have determined to draw a blueprint of sending over 100,000 missionaries by 2030. American churches can encourage Korean churches with recognition, gratitude, and comfort in such a way that these two partner nations in faith should endeavor for world evangelization.
How Korean Mission Began
Since the Korean-American Commercial Treaty in May 20, 1882, the American Minister Extraordinary, Mr. Foote (May 20, 1883~January 10, 1885) had been holding his post in Korea, and in July 16, 1883, Mr. Young Ik Min was delegated to the United States as Minister Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary. Then Mr. Young Ik Min and his company set a milestone to open the history of Korean missions by American missionaries.
Dr. Kaucher, a Methodist minister and the dean of a Baltimore women's college, had come to meet Mr. Min and his company in a train going from San Francisco to Washington, D.C. After hearing about the situation in Korea from them for 3 days, Dr. Kauchercame to be greatly interested in the Korean mission and requested a preparatory field investigation for a Korean mission to the Methodist mission headquarters and the missionary Rev. Robert S. McClay in Japan. In the middle of June, 1884, Rev. McClay, stationed in Japan for his mission, had requested
through Mr. Ok Khun Kim to Emperor Kojong for permission to establish a hospital and a school to start the Korean mission. In July 3, 1884, Rev. McClay obtained approval of his petition from the Korean Emperor to start a hospital and a school, and he reported the news to the Methodist mission headquarters in the States and Dr. Kaucher, so that missionaries were to be dispatched for a full-scale mission with the initiation of medical and educational projects. While the Methodist mission was preparing to send missionaries to Korea, Dr. Allen, who was a medical doctor and a missionary, had been sent to China by the North America General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church, and he had come to be informed of the news that there was no medical doctor in Korea. He was permitted to go to Korea and arrived at Incheon (Chemulpo), Korea, in September 20, 1884. Hereby, for the first time in the history of Korea, the missionaries of the American Protestant Church landed on the Korean peninsula, and the age of Protestant ministry had come to begin in Korea. Immediately, Dr. Allen was appointed by the American Minister, Rev.. Foote, as a commissioned doctor for the American Consulate. Open activities of mission were prohibited; however, he was granted to have rights to reside in Korea legally. Rev. Foote took Dr. Allen to Emperor Kojong in order to introduce him as a doctor at the American Legation.
A Golden Opportunity for Dr. Alle
On December 4, 1884, there rose up the Kap Sin Coup D'etat, which was a plot to overthrow the government when Korea was to establish a post office. In this incident, Mr. Young Ik Min was attacked by a group of the reformed party with knives and his life was in danger. Emperor Kojong ordered 14 Korean doctors of oriental medicine to cure him but no one was successful. Then Dr. Allen was called in and he could manage to give him 27 stitches to stop the bleeding and made him well. On account of that, Mr. Young Ik Min gifted Dr. Allen with a big house and substantial money to express his gratitude, and Dr. Allen was able to establish a hospital named Kwang Hye Won. Mr. Young Ik Min in the royal palace said, "Our people think that you are a great doctor, and you have not come from America, but rather from heaven for this occasion." Later, Dr. Allen had the privilege to treat the Emperor and other high officials in the royal house, and also to hold a post in the government. Because of the love of God and his sacrificial devotion in his medical arts, the royal families of Korea were so touched in their hearts that the missionaries had come to be trusted, and that led to the opportunity to open the doors for the Gospel.
After that, on April 5, 1885, an American Methodist minister, Rev. Appenzeller, and a Presbyterian minister, Rev. Underwood, came to Korea as formal missionaries to begin their ministry with educational and medical ventures. Especially, they led the Koreans teaching the Bible in order to motivate their patriotism and the love of their people. Through crusading against illiteracy and teaching of hymns, they were able to plant a healthy spiritual culture in the minds of the Korean people. In that era, Korea was the most underdeveloped country in politics, economy, and culture, and after 120 years of history, although the people are still divided by North and South, today South Korea has become Christian dominated and one of the most significant countries in Asia being the 10th economic power in the world.
Here we must remember a very important fact. In order to carry out Jesus' Supreme Command to bring the Gospel to all nations, we are first to understand their cultures and to realize their ultimate needs, and only with the profound love of God, a sacrificial spirit, and pure human touches, the doors for the Gospel can be opened to reach every people of all nations. That is the way Dr. Kaucher, Rev. McClay, Dr. Allen, Rev. William B. Scranton, Rev. Appenzeller, Rev. Underwood and other missionaries did their duties utilizing educational and medical ventures to spread the Good News, the Gospel.
TheLooks of Korea in 1885 as Seen by the Missionaries
"Lord, we have just arrived at Chemulpo (Incheon), the land of Korea on Easter Sunday. On this day, Lord, you had broken the prison bars of death. Please let the Korean people be free from the chain of sins that have been oppressing them, and let them be blessed with light and freedom that the children of God may enjoy!"
-From a prayer by the missionary, Rev. Appenzeller-
"Lord, I don't see anything now! In this poor and barren land, the country where even no stump of a tree briskly grows, we have settled here being transferred! What I see is only the stubborn and stained darkness around. There are only the darkness and poverty, and Chosun (Korean) people who are bounded with their long-established customs . . . Lord, please let me hold my faith!"
-From a prayer by the missionary, Rev. Underwood-
The Last Conversations
These were the dialogues between the Empress (Queen) Myung Sung and Mrs. Underwood written in her diary. - Rev. Underwood was a interpreter and a commissioned doctor for Emperor Kojong.-
Empress Myung Sung: "Mrs. Underwood, could you please tell us what the origin of Christmas is, that I know it is a big holiday in America, and how you celebrate it?"
Mrs. Underwood: "Mama! Christmas is indeed the biggest holiday in America. The meaning of Christmas is the day when Jesus was born, and He came to this world to save human beings. That's why we commemorate the day."
-I told her about the angels'chorus and the Christmas stars in the sky, about the baby Jesus in the manger at a stable, about the condemned world that has to be forgiven, about the one and only God who loves the world so much, and about Jesus Christ who came to save the people on earth from their sins.-
-The Empress was listening to the story with great interest. And a few days later, Emperor Kojong and Empress Myung Sung had asked many questions on the subject, and for some reason, with a very sad voice, saying:-
Empress Myung Sung: "Ah! How nice that could be if our country Chosun (Korea) were to be happy and free and strong like America is!"
Mrs. Underwood: "Empress, Mama! Although America is a rich and strong country, there is a more wonderful country than America. There are no sins, no sufferings, no tears in the country where there are only eternal glory and happiness. That's the Kingdom of Heaven!"
-At the introduction of the Kingdom, with unutterable feelings of grief, the Empress wailed and said,-
Empress Myung Sung: "Ah-! How nice that would be if His Royal Highness and the Crown Prince and I could enter the Kingdom!"
-It was not a strange thing for the Empress to long for the peace and rest in the Kingdom, however, I had to tell her the reality that no sinner can enter the Kingdom of Heaven.-
Mrs. Underwood: "Empress, Mama! Absolutely no sinner can enter the Kingdom of Heaven."
-When I said that, the Empress'face was shaded with darkness. A silence was hung in the room, then I said,-
Mrs. Underwood: "Mama, however, anyone who believes in Jesus can be forgiven, and he or she can go to Heaven."
-Empress Myung Sung was listening to me with sincere earnest. After that there was no chance to talk about the subject, however, it was the most thankful occasion that I was able to present the message of the way of salvation to Empress Myung Sung. I had come to pledge to dedicate myself to the freedom and peace for Korea and its people keeping on praying for the reformation of Korean society with educational endeavor.-
Seeing the Future through Modern History of Korea
North Korea now has posted mass killing arms and artilleries along the Demilitarized Zone and is developing nuclear weapons threatening Seoul the capital city and its district area, and making the world frightened. China, Russia, and Japan have given Korea a great deal of harm historically, and today they still do not want Korea to be united. However, being different from those countries, the United States is the one that was established on the ground of Christian faith and has given Korea a great deal of help and will continue in the future.
The Development of Christian Culture in the Modern Era of Korean History Last Dynasty of Korea (1880~1910) and the Opening of the Gate for the Gospel
1. In 1855, a British missionary, Rev. Robert Jermain Thomas died a martyr to the evangelization of Korea after handing over a Bible to a Korean.
2. In 1882 on May 20th, the historic Korea-America Commercial Treaty was established; American Minister Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, Mr. Lucius H. Foote (May 20, 1883~Jan. 10, 1885) began to hold his post in Korea.
3. In 1883 on March 6th, Mr. Yong Hio Park was commissioned by Emperor Kojong to design the Korean national flag.
4.In 1883 on July 16th, Korean-American relations were established; Mr. Yong Ik Min was delegated as Korean Ambassador to America; Mr. Min had come to meet Dr. Kaucher, a Methodist minister, and had discussed the Korean mission, and Dr. Kaucher had requested a field investigation to missionary Rev. McClay in Japan for the possibility of Korean mission.
5.In June 1884, Rev. McClay visited Korea; first, he had permission from Emperor Kojong to establish a hospital and a school project through Mr. Ok Kyun Kim. While the American Methodist mission for Korea was under way, Dr. Allen in China, dispatched by the North America General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church, was granted permission to go to Korea after knowing that there is no doctor in Korea for the American ministers in Korea.
6. In 1884 on September 20th, Dr. Allen arrived at Inchoen (Chemulpo) and opened the door for the Korean mission.
7. In 1884 on December 4th, during the Kap Sin Coup D'etat (a plot to overthrow the government when Korea was to establish a post office), the high official Mr. Yong Ik Min was severely wounded with knives by some reformers and in danger of his life, and Dr. Allen had come to have an opportunity to save Mr. Min according to God's plan prepared toevangelize Korea. That led to establish the famous hospital in Korea called Yon Sei Severance Hospital today.
8.In 1885 on April 5th, American Methodist Rev. Appenzeller and Presbyterian Rev. Underwood were the very first ones who had been dispatched to Korea as missionaries. They spread the Gospel in full-scale with education and western cultures to the land of Korea.
9.In 1886, Rev. Homer B. Hulbert, an American missionary, was hired by Emperor Kojong to teach English in the Royal English School.
10.In 1889, the Canadian missionaries Rev. Gale and Rev. Penwick arrived in Korea in order to establish Yundong Church in Seoul, Korea.
11. In 1885 on August 3rd, two student candidates for doctor, Mr. Kyung La Lee and Mr. Myung Kwan Koh came to be tutoredby Dr. Appenzeller in a home-school environment. This was the way Bae Jai Middle, High School, and College of today had been established. The first president or Korea, Mr. Syung Man Rhee, and Mr. Si Kyung Joo, who was the first author of National Language, were graduates from these schools.
12.In 1895 on October 8th, the Assassination of Empress Myung Sung was committed. After Japan had won the war against China, in order to completely colonize Korea, the Japanese had intruded into Kyung Bok Palace at dawn and raped the Empress Myung Sung in her royal bedroom, killed her cruelly, and burned Her Highness'body committing the most savage act of murder in human history. Then Dr. Allen, Rev. Underwood, Rev. Apenzeller, and all other missionaries accused them of the barbaric assassination, and the American mission headquarters made efforts to let the world know of the incident. After the assassination of Empress Myung Sung, when the Japanese were about to threaten to kill Emperor Kojong, Rev. Underwood, who was witnessing the sight, intercepted them with his pistol to protect His Highness' life.
13. In 1896 on September 2nd, at the birthday party for Emperor Kojong, Rev. Underwood had conducted a worship service with a prayer meeting for the Emperor and his country. Emperor Kojong was so grateful and comforted that he said in great admiration, "Indeed, Christianity is a patriotic religion loving its people."Rev. Underwood and all other missionaries had done all their best for the souls of Korean people.
14.In 1897, in order to declare Korea as an independent country from China (then Chung), Emperor Kojong made himself the accession to the throne as Emperor and named the country the Republic of Korea.
15. In September 1898, the Canada Presbyterian mission dispatched Rev. R. G. Grierson, and Rev. Foote as missionaries to Korea.
16.In 1904, Mr. Syung Man Rhee, a patriot, who had been released form Japanese imprisonment carried a secret message of Emperor Kojong to President Theodore Roosevelt overseas and requested him to help Korea overcome the Japanese aggression.
The Era of Japanese Aggression and Korean Liberation (1910~1945)
1. In 1910 on August 22nd, Japan amalgamated Korea by force to colonize it. At that era, Korea lost its nation, and the Korean people not only lost their sovereignty and freedom of faith and speech, but the Japanese also forced Koreans not to use Han Gul (the Korean language), and they even forced Koreans to change their names into Japanese. Then the American missionaries were so furious that they endeavored hard to let America and the rest of the world know of such cruelty and savagery of the Japanese. Therefore, the missionaries taught Korean youths the patriotic spirit of independence for Korea through Biblical faith and education, and helped the exiled Korean army for national independence in secret.
2.In 1915, Rev. Underwood established Korean Christian College (Yon Sei) in order to teach Korean youth the Biblical faith and patriotic spirit for their country.
3. In 1919 on March 1st, the so-called "3.1. Hurrah Movement"was the nationwide campaign declaring independence of Korea from the Japanese occupation. In this campaign, a great number of patriots, ministers, and believers were massacred.
4. In April 1919, the exiled patriots in China established a provisional government for Korea declaring its independence in the spirit of "A Country to be established by the Will of God",being the very first Christian Nation in the East. Like the people of Israel who lived under the slavery of the Egyptians, Koreans had to suffer under the Japanese colonialism with terrifying persecutions and agonies no nation had ever experienced in history.
5. In 1945 on August 15th, the freedom of Korea had come! World War II had been the most inhuman conflict of war in human history. This liberation of Korea had been brought to the people of Korea by the people of America. The majority of Koreans are very grateful for the freedom granted by the Will of God and the United States.
6. In 1948on August 15th, finally the government of the Republic of Korea came to be established declaring a democratic nation. The first president of the Republic, Mr. Syung Man Rhee took an oath, saying, "Today, at this significant occasion to be inaugurated as president, I do solemnly give my pledge to serve this country at the sight of my God and my people!"
Divided Koreas: The South, Free Republic of Korea
The North, the Peoples Republic of Chosun, a communist nation
1. In 1946 on February 8th, Il Sung Kim of North Korea organized a provisional peoples committee and established a communist nation.
2.In 1947, the United States sent an international alliance committee to assist Korea to establish a united government of Korea, however, the communist Russia, China, and North Korea refused the proposal.
3.In 1948 on May 10th, South Korea held a nationwide election under surveillance of the United Nations to establish the first Constitutional Assembly. At the historical opening of the National Assembly,Rev. Youn Young Lee offered a prayer to God, and the acting chairman, Mr. Syung Man Rhee was elected and delivered his speech in which he said, "First of all we must thank God that we are able to open this first session of Congress of the Republic of Korea, the independent democratic country, and no matter what religious faith any of you may have, no one should boast that we did accomplish this our own way." That was the way the Constitutional Assembly of the Republic of Korea started with a dedication of the spirit to God.
6.25 Korean War: the South invaded by North Korea
South Korea was saved by the United States under the UN Flag.
1. In 1950 on June 25th, the communist Mr. Il Sung Kim with the support of Russia and China began armed aggression in order to communize South Korea. At the edge of the total occupation of Korean peninsula by the communists, the American missionaries escaped to Japan and had special fasting prayer sessions at General McArthur's official residence for three days, and they requested General McArthur that the United State help Korea to be saved from the communist aggression. President Syung Man Rhee made an urgent request to the United Nations for immediate dispatch of troops to save Korea, otherwise millions of God's peopleof Christian faith would have been slaughtered by the communists, then. The immediate action was made by the United States with strong support by the United Nations resolutions.
2. In 1950 on September 15th, the historic "Incheon Landing Operation" under the command of General McArthur was made successfully to drive out the communist forces of North Korea and China. The war lasted for 3 years leaving over 50 thousand dead and hundreds of thousands injured among American soldiers, and millions of Koreans in order to protect the freedom of Korea.
3. In 1953 on June 27th, the Korean War was ended by the "Panmunjom Truce Agreement" without the two Koreas being united.
4. Now more than half a century has passed and South Korea has grown to become the 10th greatest economic power in the world. Korea, however, is still divided between north and south, and the North Korean nuclear issue is still left on the table of 6-party talks as well as the missile issue.
5.God is now revealing His Providence acting according to the prayers accumulated by American missionaries and believers among the Korean people; God wants us, Korea, the United States and other friendly nations to work together for the peace and freedom of the world.
6. Therefore, the World Culture Mission was established in order to evangelize the world in this generation through strategic plans through World Evangelical Missions. The world is waiting for the culture that is humane and the core of that culture is the Gospel of the Christian faith.
7. This summary of Korean history is to let the world know that the Republic of Korea today has been established on the grounds of a Christian spirit by people of faith according to the Providence of God.
“ Mankind makes its history with thoughts and words, and the history keeps on observing without words, however, God will make it clear what is GOOD and what is EVIL at the end! ”
