[ Devotional Column] Laying Down Anger, Standing on the Cross Through Prayer
How often throughout the day do we unleash our anger, whether in the name of righteousness or out of a sense of unfairness? There are moments when the desire to prove we are right and to fix the situation in our own strength boils over. Yet Scripture issues a firm warning: "For the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God" (James 1:20).
Our human temper and seemingly justified anger can never serve as holy tools to accomplish God’s will. The moment our emotions take control, we block God’s work and establish our own self-righteousness instead. Anger may appear to solve problems, but in reality, it only shatters the peace of Christ.
How, then, do we overcome this anger and our innate human limitations? The answer lies at the Cross and in prayer.
Oswald Chambers reminds us that the Cross is what completely and absolutely unites us with the Lord Jesus Christ. Just as Jesus emptied Himself and surrendered to the Father’s will on the Cross, the Cross is where our temper and self-will must die. And the means by which this union becomes a lived reality in our daily lives is prayer.
Jesus declared, "In that day you will ask in my name..." (John 16:26a). To pray in His name is not merely adding a formula to the end of our requests. It is a holy transition—stepping out of our own will and emotions, and entering into the heart and character of Jesus Christ. When we pray, our anger is replaced by His purity, and our justified indignation yields to His compassion.
Reflect on your day today:
Were there moments where you gave in to anger while insisting on your own correctness? Did you justify your human temper under the guise of pursuing God’s righteousness?
The place we must stand today is not the judgment seat of our own emotions,
but before the Cross. When anger wells up inside, do not explode—retreat to the place of prayer. As we die to self and allow Christ to live through us through prayers that truly unite us with Him, God's authentic righteousness will finally be realized in our lives.
