  Chapter 30 : Gathering and Multiplying(收殖,수식)... Sowing and Reaping... Matter No. 180

收(수)는 세상 사람들의 신뢰와 존경을 받는 것이며 殖(식)은 財貨(재화)의 사용을 불리는 것이다.

  "Gathering(收,수)" means earning the trust and respect of the people of the world,

   while "Multiplying(殖,식)" means increasing the utility and value of one′s wealth.

구제함에 있어 세상 사람의 신망과 존경이 없다면 달성하지 못한다.

  In providing relief to others,

  it cannot be accomplished without the trust and respect of the world.

구제를 은혜로서 베푸는 데에 재화가 사용되지 않는다면 믿지 않는다.

  When extending relief as an act of grace,

  people will not believe it if actual wealth is not put to use.

사람을 구제하는 데 지혜를 활용하고 더 한다면,
사람들의 신뢰와 존경을 받는 것을 귀하게 여기고 재화를 사용하는 것을 천하게 여겨야 한다.

  If one is to utilize and apply wisdom in apply wisdom in saving people,

  they must highly value earning people′s trust and respect,

  while viewing the mere spending of material wealth as a lesser concern.

收는 收人望也요 (수는 수인망야요)

  "Gathering(收,수)" means earning and gathering the trust and respect of the people.

殖은 殖財用也라 (식은 식재용야라)
   "Multiplying(殖,식)" means increasing the utility and value of material wealth.

濟之以德인대 非人望이며 不達이요 (제지이덕인대 비인망이며 부달이요)

  If one seeks to provide relief through virtue,

  it cannot be accomplished without earning the people′s trust and respect,

濟之以惠에 非財用이면 不信이니 (제지이혜에 비재용이면 불신이니)

  When extending relief as an act of grace,

  people will not believe it if actual material wealth is not put to use.

欲遂濟人之智者는 貴人望而賤財用이니라. (욕수제인지지자는 귀인망이천재용이니라.)

  Therefore, a wise person who truly wishes to fulfill the purpose of saving

  and helping people must highly value earning the people′s trust and respect,

  while viewing the mere spending of matewial wealth as a lesser concern.

 [Interpretation, 풀이]

남에게 좋은 일을 한다고 생색을 내기를 좋아하는 사람들이 의외로 많다.

  Surprisingly, there are many people who love to take credit and look self-important

  when doing good deeds for others.

이러한 사람들은 생색은 남과 다투어 가며 내지만
막상 자신의 재물을 사용하는데는 철면피나 다름없는 경우가 우리 주위엔 너무도 흔하다.

  It is far too common around us to see such people compete with others to take the spotlight,

   yet show a completely shameless face when it actually comes to spending their own wealth.

이 역시 혼돈의 대표적인 실례 중의 하나로서 귀신이지 인간은 아닌 것이다.

  This is also a prime example of spiritual confusion;

   acting in such a way is the behavior of a deceptive spirit, not a true human being.
