SEOUL, Dec. 25 (Yonhap) -- The presidential office convened an emergency ministerial-level meeting with government officials Thursday to discuss a recent data breach at e-commerce giant Coupang Inc., according to informed sources.

Kim Yong-beom, presidential chief of staff for policy, presided over the meeting, attended by ministerial-level government officials, including the science minister and the personal information protection commission chair, as well as officials from investigative agencies, the sources said.
Notably, Foreign Minister Cho Hyun and officials from the National Security Office attended the meeting, together with senior officials from the National Intelligence Service. It indicates they may look into Coupang's lobbying activities in the United States.

"There is widespread understanding within the government about the seriousness of the breach," a source said, asking not to be identified, adding that given the gravity of the issue, the meeting took place even on a holiday.

Other sources close to the issue noted that the meeting being held on a holiday suggests how seriously President Lee Jae Myung takes the issue.
During a briefing by the finance ministry on Dec. 11, Lee criticized the U.S.-listed e-commerce giant, saying, "Those people are not afraid of punishment at all."

Earlier in the day, Coupang announced it has recovered all leaked personal information involving approximately 3,000 customers, adding that no data has been transferred to anyone outside the company.

Coupang said it has identified a former employee responsible for the data leak by using forensic evidence, adding that the individual confessed and provided a detailed account of how customer information was accessed.
But the government refuted Coupang's announcement as a "unilateral claim," saying the outcome of a private-government joint team's investigation into the data leak have yet to come out.

[이데일리 석지헌 기자] ​대통령실이 최근 대규모 개인정보 유출 사태를 빚은 쿠팡을 상대로 내부 직원들에게 ‘접촉 자제령’을 내렸다. 부적절한 대관 접촉을 사전에 차단하고 공직기강을 엄정하게 바로잡겠다는 의지로 풀이된다.

27일 YTN에 따르면 대통령실 공직기강비서관실은 최근 전 직원에게 쿠팡 관계자와의 개별 접촉을 금지하고 기존 접촉 사례가 있을 경우 이를 자진 신고하라는 지침을 하달했다.

이번 지침은 행정관급 이상 전 직원을 대상으로 한다. 쿠팡 관계자와 접촉한 적이 있는 직원은 공직기강비서관실에 해당 내용을 자진 신고해야 하며 대통령실은 부적절한 접촉이 확인된 직원에 대해 별도의 감찰 조사도 진행할 방침인 것으로 알려졌다.

이는 쿠팡의 대규모 정보 유출 사고 이후 사후 조치가 미흡하다는 비판이 거세지는 상황에서 대통령실 직원이 쿠팡 측과 접촉하는 것 자체가 정부 정책에 대한 오해를 부를 수 있다는 판단에 따른 것으로 풀이된다.

대통령실은 쿠팡이 실질적인 피해 회복보다는 사건 축소를 위해 미국 정가 등을 대상으로 전방위 로비에 집중하고 있다는 정황을 포착한 것으로 전해졌다. 지난 25일에는 쿠팡 사태 대책 마련을 위한 관계 부처 장관급 회의를 긴급 소집하기도 했다.

앞서 이재명 대통령은 지난 11일 업무 보고에서 “이번에 ‘무슨 팡’인가 하는 곳에서도 규정을 어기지 않았느냐”고 질타했다. 이어 다음 날인 12일에도 “앞으로는 규정을 위반해 국민에게 피해를 주면 엄청난 경제 제재를 당해서 ‘회사가 망한다’는 생각이 들도록 해야 한다”고 강조한 바 있다.
