2. English Translation (영역) jung ha sun Rain GearIt rained for the first time since I started school. My grandfather put a straw raincoat on meand placed a bamboo hat on my head.Though my body didn't get wet, shame soaked me to the very depths of my lungs, making me tremble. Looking back, under the sharp, pointing fingers of umbrellas,my straw raincoat became a curled-up hedgehog, bristling needles all over its body. The rain came again.Grandfather brought them out—the straw raincoat and bamboo hat hanging in the shed.I didn't wear them. I didn't wear my grandfather.I went to school in the rain.Drenched all over, I became a soaked rat.The sunlight by the window after the raindidn't leave my eyes throughout the sixth period, but the teacher, still in a winter suit, taught the lesson, scattering chalk dust. Grinding and gnawingat the long hours with the thin teeth of the second hand,I prayed to a God I didn't believe in to let us go soon.Picking scabs from bruised lips, drawing out dead blood with leeches, rolling up wrinkled, torn knees to weave fine ramie fabric—The few banknotes earned and hidden away, living a life sentence in the inner pocket of her bloomers, those few notes with worn-out whiskerswere finally released, springing out like a coil.As the price of that first release, Grandmother bought mea bamboo-ribbed umbrella covered in military-olive canvas, still stiff with a soldier’s spirit. The rain came again.Like the footsteps of a released prisoner, like the marching boots of a soldier, lightly, rhythmically.   3.
