After looking at statues of Buddha and other various relics from Anapji Pond, Ara and her friends left the museum and headed to the place where the Divine Bell of Seongdeok the Great stood. Marina and Carlos were curious to find out about the bell's secret that Ara had talked about earlier.

"Ara, tell us about the secret behind this bell."

"There's a really sad story behind this bell, nicknamed the Emille Bell. It's said that the bell they had made didn't make any sound at first. Then one day, a Buddhist monk had a dream telling him that for the bell to toll, a baby had to be melted in there. And so a poor mother who had nothing to pay her dues had no choice but to give her baby away. That's why the bell makes this mournful sound emille, emille which means mom."

Marina and Carlos seemed sad to hear the story.

"Well, people came up with this story because they were greatly moved by the bell's beautiful yet melancholy sound.", added Ara.

"I want to hear the bell toll.", said Marina.

Marina felt her heart pound at the sound. Because the legend related to the bell would be likely to make it sound all the more sorrowful.

성덕대왕신종

불상과 안압지에서 나온 다양한 유물을 본 뒤에, 아라와 아이들은 박물관에서 나와 성덕대왕신종이 있는 곳으로 향했습니다. 마리나와 카를로스는 아라가 말한 종에 얽힌 전설이 궁금했어요.

"아라야, 종에 얽힌 전설을 들려 줘."

"에밀레종이라고도 불리는 이 종에는 아주 슬픈 전설이 있어. 종을 만들었는데 처음에는 아무런 소리가 나지 않는 거야. 그러던 어느 날 한 스님이 꿈을 꿨는데, 종에 아이를 넣어야만 소리가 난다고 했지. 그래서 나라에 바칠 게 없었던 한 가난한 어머니가 어쩔 수 없이 아이를 주었단다. 이것이 바로 종이 에밀레(엄마), 에밀레 하고 아주 슬프게 울리는 이유야."

마리나와 카를로스는 그 이야기를 듣고 슬퍼하는 것처럼 보였어요.

"음, 종소리가 너무 구슬프면서도 아름답다 보니 사람들이 이런 이야기를 만들어 낸 것 같아."라고, 아라가 덧붙였습니다.

"종소리를 들어보고 싶어."라고, 마리나가 말했습니다.

마리나는 가슴이 쿵쿵 뛰는 것을 느꼈어요.

왜냐하면 종소리와 연관된 전설이 종소리를 더욱 애절하게 들리게 만들 것 같았으니까요.
