220.As a result, his ear holes were clogged with all kinds of muck
and wax and bits of chewing-gum and dead flies and stuff like that.

223.Bean rubbed the back of his neck with a dirty finger.
224.He had a boil coming there and it itched.

232.Soon, two enormous caterpillar tractors with mechinal shovels
on their front ends came clanking into the wood.
233.Bean was driving one. Bunce the other. The machines were both black.
234.They were murderous, brutal looking monsters.
235.Here we go then, shouted bean. Death to the fox! shouted bunce.
236.The machines went to work biting huge mouthfuls of soil out of the hill.
237.The big tree under which Mr. fox had dug his hole
in the first place was toppled like a matchstick.
238.On all sides, rocks were sent flying and trees were falling and the noise was deafening.
239.Down in the tunnel the foxes crouched, listening to the terrible clanging and banging overhead.
240.What's happening dad? cried all the small foxes. What are they doing?
241.Mr. fox didn't know what was happening or what they were doing.
242.It's an earthquake! cried Mrs. fox.
243.Look! said one of the small foxes. our tunnel's got shorter! I can see daylight!
244.They all looked around, and yes, the mouth of the tunnel was only a few feet away from them now.
245.And in the circle of daylight beyond they could see the two huge black tractors almost on top of them.
246.Tractors! shouted Mr. fox. And mechanical shovels! dig for your lives! dig,dig,dig!
247.Now there began a desperate reace, the machines against the foxes.
248.In the beginning, the hill looked like this.
249.After about an hour, as the machines bit away more and more soil from the hilltop, it looked like this.
250.Sometimes the foxes would gain a little ground
and the clacking nosies would grow fainter and Mr. fox would say.
251.We're going to make it! I'm sure we are!
252.But then a few moments later, the machines would come back at them
and the crunch of the mighty shovels would get louder and louder.
253.Once the foxes actually saw the sharp metal edge of one of the shovels
as it scraped up the earth just behind them.
254.Keep going my darlings! painted Mr. fox. Don't give up!
255.Keep going! the fat boggis shouted to bunce and bean.

263.Hey there Mr. fox! yelled bunce, leaning out of his tractor.
264.We're coming to get you now! you've had your last chicken! yelled boggis.

266.A sort of madness had taken hold of the three men.
267.The tall skinny bean and dwarfish pot-bellied bunce were driving their machines and maniacs.
268.Racing the motors and making the shovels dig at a terrific speed.
269.The fat boggis was hopping about like a dervish and shouting, faster, faster!
270.By five o'clock in the afternoon this is what had happened to the hill.
271.The hole the machines had dug was like the crater of a volcano.
272.It was such and extraordinary sight that crowds of people
came rushing out from the surrounding villages to have a look.
273.They stood on the edge of the crater and staed down at boggis and bunce and bean.

275.You must be mad! the people jeered and laughed.
276.But this only made the three farmers more furious and more obstinate.
277.And more determined than ever not to give up untill they had caught the fox.
278.At six o'clock in the evening, Bean swithched off the motor of his tractor
and climbed down from the driver's seat.
279.Bunce did the same. Both men had had enough.
280.They were tired and stiff from driving the tractors all day.
281.They were also hungry.
282.Slowly they walked over to the small fox's hole in the bottom of the huge crater.
283.Bean's face was purple with rage
284.Bunce was cursing the fox ith dirty words that cannot be printed.
285.Boggis came waddling up. Dang and blast the filthy stinking fox! he said.
286.What the heck do we do now? I'll tell you what we don't do. Bean said.

289.Did you hear that, Mr. fox, yelled bean, bending low and shouting down the hole.

292.Whereupon the three men all shook hands with one another and swore a solemn oath.
293.That they would not go back to their farms until the fox was caught.
