3. 오늘의 묵상칼럼 : 홀로 건너는 요단강, 그리고 물가에 심긴 삶

   우리는 하나님을 믿는다고 고백하지만, 그 믿음이 참된 것인지 확인되는 순간은 대개 무리 속에 있을 때가 아니라 홀로 선 순간입니다. 오스왈드 챔버스는 "당신이 믿고 있는 하나님이 정말로 당신의 하나님인지 알기 원한다면 홀로 당신의 요단강을 건너십시오"라고 도전합니다. 열왕기하 2장에서 엘리야가 회오리바람을 타고 승천한 후, 엘리사는 스승의 겉옷을 들어 물을 치며 "엘리야의 하나님 여호와는 어디 계시니이까" 하고 홀로 요단강을 건넜습니다. 스승의 신앙, 공동체의 신앙 뒤에 숨을 수 없는 영적 홀로서기의 순간이 찾아온 것입니다.

   홀로 요단강을 건너는 경험은 두렵고 외롭지만, 나를 이끌던 세상의 의지처나 타인의 믿음이 아닌 '나의 하나님'을 개인적으로 만나는 거룩한 관문이 됩니다. 스승의 하나님이 아닌 나의 하나님을 경험할 때, 비로소 우리의 신앙은 뿌리를 내리기 시작합니다. 타인의 조력에 의존하던 삶에서 스스로 하나님을 경험하는 삶으로 전환될 때, 영적 독립이 이루어집니다.

   이렇게 홀로 요단강을 건너 하나님을 '나의 하나님'으로 고백하게 된 자에게 예레미야 17장 8절의 축복이 임합니다. 그 사람은 "물가에 심어진 나무가 그 뿌리를 강변에뻗치고 더위가 올지라도 두려워하지 아니하며 그 잎이 청청하며 가무는 해에도 걱정이 없고 결실이 그치지 아니함"과 같은 삶을 살게 됩니다. 세상의 타오르는 더위와 메마른 가뭄은 삶의 고난을 의미하지만, 근원되시는 하나님께 깊이 뿌리를 내린 영혼은 환경에 휘둘리지 않고 지속적인 열매를 맺습니다.

   오늘, 누군가의 신앙에 얹혀 가고 있지는 않은지 스스로를 돌아보아야 합니다. 타인의 경험과 고백을 넘어, 나만의 요단강을 홀로 건너십시오. 스승의 하나님이 나의 하나님이 될 때, 어떤 가뭄 속에서도 푸름을 잃지 않는 물가의 나무처럼 흔들리지 않는 신앙의 결실을 맺게 될 것입니다.

4. 오늘의 묵상칼럼(영문판) : Crossing Your Jordan Alone, and the Tree Planted by the Water

   We often confess our faith in God, but the true test of that faith comes not when we are surrounded by the crowd, but when we stand completely alone. Oswald Chambers challenges us: "If you want to know whether the God you believe in is truly your God, cross your Jordan alone." In 2 Kings 2, after Elijah was taken up to heaven in a whirlwind, Elisha picked up his master's cloak, struck the water, and cried out, "Where now is the Lord, the God of Elijah?" He then crossed the Jordan River alone. It was a moment of spiritual independence, where he could no longer hide behind his master’s faith or authority.

   Crossing our own Jordan alone can feel intimidating and lonely, but it is a sacred threshold where we meet God personally—not through the faith of our parents, mentors, or community, but as our God. Spiritual autonomy begins when we shift from relying on the faith of others to experiencing God for ourselves. Passing through this personal Jordan turns inherited religion into a living, personal relationship.

   For the one who crosses the Jordan alone and firmly anchors their faith in the Lord, the promise of Jeremiah 17:8 comes to life: "They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit." The scorching heat and dry droughts represent the inevitable trials of life. Yet, a soul deeply rooted in the living water of God remains unfazed by external circumstances, continually bearing fruit.

   Today, we must ask ourselves whether we are merely coasting on someone else's faith. Step out from the shadow of others and cross your Jordan alone. When the God of your mentors becomes explicitly your God, you will stand like a tree planted by the water—unshaken by drought and ever fruitful in every season of life.
