July 5th [Voice Mass of St. Andrew Kim Tae-gon, Priest and Martyr] Matthew 10:17-22 Father Kim Dae-gun's Last Letter, Last Heart Today is the day to honor the devotion of Korea's first priest, Father Kim Tae-gun. Above all, there is no better way to feel Father Kim Dae-geon's love for the believers than to look at the contents of the letters he sent to the believers. The priest, who learned several languages after going to Macau to study abroad, left a total of 21 letters, 19 in Latin, 1 in Chinese, and finally 1 in Korean. The last of these, the Korean letter he wrote to the believers in prison contains Father Kim Dae-geon's heart for the believers. 1. “If we are born once into the world and do not know the God who created us, then the world is not worth living.” It is in line with what Jesus said to Judas Iscariot that it would have been better if he had not been born. The priest says that unless he first knows the God who created him, he is not worth being born into. He says it hurts the most when he sees people who do not think of God and who are distracted by vain and vain worlds. There is a strong desire for the salvation of souls. 2. “Even if you know the God who created you and enter the church, if you do not live like a disciple of the Lord, then you will not only be worthless in this world, but you will become ungrateful and fall into a worse position than those who have not been baptized.” The priest says that those who do not bear the fruit of faith even though they have been baptized will rather “become enemies with the Lord and deserve eternal punishment.” If the farmer works hard and does not bear fruit, the farmer will plow the field. Then, what are the fruits that believers must bear? 3. “Please do not succumb to the current persecution, but be strong, pray to God day and night, resist the worldly and fleshly devils, and endure this suffering to reveal the glory of God and save your souls!” At that time, the purpose of faith was clear. It is to hope that you will bear the fruit of poverty, chastity, and obedience by overcoming the world, the flesh, and the devil. And in that way, He emphasized prayer, the Word, and sacramental life. “Follow the holy will of the Lord and unite with Jesus with complete trust to defeat the worldly devils who have already been defeated. Faced with such a time of trial, you must fight with all your heart, with all your strength, and with all your abilities, like a strong soldier equipped with all weapons (the Rosary, the Bible, and the sacramental life) and win.” The reason we live a life of faith is to overcome possessiveness, lust, and arrogance. The Lord shed blood to overcome this. It is said that a believer who does not bear that fruit is better not to be baptized. But these days, how many believers know about the three spheres (the world, the body, and the devil)? There were very few. The year Father Kim was martyred was the Byeongo Persecution in 1846, so in less than 200 years, the doctrine that Father Kim Dae-geon emphasized the most was forgotten. We do not know how many people fall into the pit of evil because they do not teach this doctrine. “The Wolf of Wall Street,” directed by Martin Scorsese, is based on the true story of Jordan Belfort, a young, ambitious stockbroker who becomes the founder of Stratton Oakmont, a corporation that engages in rampant corruption and fraud. Throughout the film, Jordan is frequently warned about his reckless behavior and the illegality of his actions. But he doesn't listen. He was exposed to the world, the flesh, and the devil as he was, and he thought his thoughts were right. Eventually he ends up in prison, his empire collapses and he loses his wealth, family and freedom. Jordan is the future of humanity. At least there were people who told Jordan that the life of the world, the flesh, and the devil was wrong. It was his father and his wife and friends. But he abandoned them. But now even in the church they don't tell me it's wrong. The doctrines of the world, the flesh, and the devil have disappeared. In his only letter to believers, right before he died, he wished only to win the battle against the world, the flesh, and the devil. It is no exaggeration to say that this is all He is trying to teach. Shouldn't we inherit his teachings if we sincerely respect Father Kim Dae-geon, not just in words?
